We Are Plant People - Going Strong Since 1979

|
January is a busy month for Garden Centers. We are reorganizing at the Garden Shop and around the Garden Center. Meanwhile on our Farm - Susan, Cody, and Amanda are cleaning up and clearing the way for a big planting season of vegetables, annuals, perennials, berries, and shrubs.
We’ve also been attending trade shows. Libby went to MANTS (the Mid-Atlantic Nursery Trade Show) and then down to Florida to join other staff - Kira, David, and Jonathan - for the TPIE Show (Tropical Plant International Expo). They’ve been able to tour huge propagation houses with educational benefits. The show itself is amazing with gorgeous plants everywhere and very creative displays. Check out our Instagram and Facebook for more pictures.
In North Carolina, Susan, Dave, Randal, and Tanya attended the Green and Growin’ Show sponsored by the NCNLA (North Carolina Nursery & Landscape Association) with educational workshops and a great horticultural trade show. They have their eyes out for beautiful plant sources and great garden related items.
Last week Jayne and Marie headed to the AmericasMart Atlanta where the exhibition center is one of the largest permanent wholesale trade centers in the world. With three multi-story buildings and seven million square feet to look for new finds, it is overwhelming and exciting at the same time.
Everyone is returning from the shows pumped up with enthusiasm and inspiration for 2023!

- When watering, always check your houseplants for pests. Be proactive if treatment is needed so issues don’t spread. Ask us about organic solutions.
- Don’t let ice-melting products damage your plants with salt exposure. Alternatives would be kitty litter, sawdust, or sand.
- Pull any broadleaf weeds from your lawn. Hori Hori knives are a great tool for doing this. Awesome Hori Hori knives are available in our Garden Shop.
- You CAN plant trees and shrubs now, as long as the ground is not frozen.
- Prune grape vines.
- Because of our fierce December freeze, most other pruning should be left until later in the season.

- When the ground is not wet, prepare the spot for your spring veggie garden. Don’t work wet soil. It damages your soil structure.
- Plan your spring & summer veggie crops and flower crops. We have lots of seed choices!

- Use a cold frame to plant cool season crops like lettuce and spinach. Remember to ventilate during sunny weather. Sluggo is a great organic solution when slugs are an issue.
- Sharpen your tools and lawn mower blades. Tune up your lawn mower.
- Buy something green to brighten up your January!
- Wondering about cold-damaged plants? Watch this YouTube for advice!
- Wondering how to protect you plants if another cold snap is predicted? We have fiberglass rods and floating row cover (for frost protection) in stock.
