Summertime Planting
FROM WILMA:  Here it is almost the 4th of July and some of us still have containers, flats, or seed trays of plants sitting around waiting to be planted. Time restraints, weather, and space restrictions are some of the reasons (excuses) they aren’t planted. I look forward to getting some herbs and seedlings into the ground soon and have set some time aside in the evenings – my favorite time to be in the garden.

The marathon rain and cloudiness of last week may have set things back a bit especially in the veggie garden. Sunny and warm (hot) weather is predicted and  plants should really take off. I have overheard some of you talking about your tomatoes and looking forward to “homegrown” ones that should ripen soon.

Most of the flowers I plant are for cutting and/or pollinators. The zinnias I planted from seed are almost ready to flower and my pollinator plantings are attracting bees and a few butterflies. Perennials, annuals, herbs, trees, shrubs, and supplies for summertime plantings are available in the Garden Center!

Worried about winter damaged plants?
Remain cautious about digging up and discarding any plants. It has been cooler than normal during June and things are getting off to a slower start. We're still finding signs of plants just now waking up in the root zone. Warmer soil and air temperatures help promote new growth on plants that appear to be dead, plus new growth may be pushed out from the roots (especially crape myrtle, hydrangea, fig roots, and even perennials). This video was produced after the deep freeze at Christmas and discusses what to to look for.
