Trees are such an integral part of Western North Carolina's beauty and natural appeal - it is hard to imagine our part of the world without the green that carpets our mountains.
Along with cooling our planet - trees in our home landscapes cheer us with spring flowers, cool us down in summertime, glow with glorious fall color, and add structure and bones to our winter landscapes.
Trees are the meadows of the sky providing large swaths of food for pollinators - especially in early spring. Have you ever listened to the bees buzzing in the maple trees in early spring or thought about the amount of pollen and nectar one poplar tree provides? Oak trees are super-supporters that provide food and shelter for more than 2300 species of wildlife including invertebrates, birds, and mammals.
Clockwise: Red Maple, Dogwood, White Oak, Crape Myrtle
Strategize where you can add trees in your yard - keeping in mind placement for cooling our homes and summer entertainment areas while avoiding electrical wires. We have lots of great choices currently available, and our tree inventory offers an array of beautiful options for additions to your home landscape. Our staff is happy to offer advice for your particular needs. Delivery is available!

Water is life for us and for plants too. The heat of summer can quickly dry out your hanging baskets and porch pots. New planted trees & shrubs need regular watering the whole first year. Recently planted annuals and perennials need regular water too. Veggies and grass need an inch of water per week.
In the summer heat, hanging baskets may need water twice daily when it's hot. And anything in a container is counting on you as its water source. What seems like a massive rainstorm may not deliver as much water as you think, so use a rain gauge to monitor what's really happening - and water accordingly.
Don't let this slow your gardening down. Just commune with your plants and your hose on a regular basis to keep everything looking fresh and happy.
Mulch can be a huge help with retaining moisture in the soil around your plants. Remember to keep the mulch pulled away from the trunk of the plants, and if you have trouble with slugs - Sluggo is a great organic solution that works!

Worried about winter damaged plants?
Remain cautious about digging up and discarding any plants. It has been cooler than normal during June and things are getting off to a slower start. We're still finding signs of plants just now waking up in the root zone. Warmer soil and air temperatures help promote new growth on plants that appear to be dead, plus new growth may be pushed out from the roots (especially crape myrtle, hydrangea, fig roots, and even perennials). This video was produced after the deep freeze at Christmas and discusses what to to look for.
