The Rising Popularity of Perennial Grasses
|
Drawing inspiration from garden designer Piet Oudolf’s projects like The High Line in NYC and the Lurie Garden at Millennial Park in Chicago - the popularity of perennial grasses has spiked along with our interest in creating meadow gardens. Available in a variety of heights, shapes, and colors, ornamental perennial grasses add unique texture, year-round interest, and movement to the garden.
Along with beauty, habitat for birds and pollinators is enhanced by planting native perennial grasses (we currently have a nice assortment of native grasses in stock). Even after the fall frost when ornamental grass turns a soft straw color it continues to provide structure and movement in the winter garden. Perennial grasses are also extremely low maintenance, making them a welcome addition to any garden.
Most ornamental grasses look best when planted in full sun and well-drained soil. Grass should be cut back once a year in late winter before new growth starts.
In shadier spots consider Carex (sedges) to add beautiful color and texture to the shade garden. Carex can be cut back or tidied up if it looks unattractive after winter, but it recovers more slowly than grasses.
Places we’ve noticed great grasses: Panicum grass (Switch Grass) at Goodwill’s exit in Weaverville and mixed grass plantings at Sierra Nevada Brewery near the airport. What about you?

Behind the Scenes Updates
|
FROM WILMA: Many of the plants at the Garden Center are grown at our Production Farm. Lots of seeding, labeling, transplanting, fertilizing, watering, inventorying, and spacing go into each crop. Deliveries to the Garden Center involve loading the trucks at the Farm and then unloading, displaying, organizing, and caring for them at the Garden Center. Thanks to the great staff at both places for making this happen!
The fall mum crop is coming along at the Farm. Late- season veggies are being sown. Pansies and other fall ornamentals will be transplanted a little later. The blueberry crop as well as shrubs and perennials are looking good. They will be taken to the Garden Center as they become ready.
By this time in summer, weeds are really making their presence known. In my veggie patch they seem to have grown by leaps and bounds just in the past few days. Removing them before they go to seed can help curb them in the future. At the Farm we have been working on weed control – a little each morning before the temperature rises.
