Exploring Aromatic Plants & Messengers
Blue Yarrow
Achillea millefolium

* Wholeness * Sacred Boundaries *
The story of Yarrow as wound healer goes far back in time, to Achilles and the Trojan war.

There is a reverence for Yarrow and its medicine that is universal wherever this perennial herb grows wild or cultivated in fields of temperate climates throughout Europe and North America.

Energetically cool and dry, yarrow leaves wilt quickly after harvesting, but I have discovered that when dried properly, can remain fresh in a jar for 2 years. Each time I harvest Yarrow, I ponder how such a delicate plant offers such potent healing for body and soul.

As an essential oil, it takes many pounds of millefolium to make this deep dark blue oil, rich with chazulene, the signature for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. Yarrow’s reputation as a healer for wounds stems from its ability to soothe inflammation, particularly of the nerves and skin, fight infection, balance digestion. One of the rare hepatic oils, its ability to move Liver chi supports the body’s ability to detox and heal. Because Yarrow is so potent, a dilution of less than 2% - 2 drops in 5 ml – is suggested.

When Yarrow appears on your path, it may be calling your attention to an emotional wound, past or present, that may not be completely healed. Yarrow’s action on the Liver can help loosen deeply buried anger.

Yarrow tends to thrive where it appears naturally, in open fields, and invites us to explore the same:  allow ourselves to find our natural rhythm, to breathe, invigorate, and cleanse our aura. As a warm green tea of its flowers and leaves, or a cooling blue oil to strengthen your sacred boundaries, may you enjoy seeking out its essence.
