A Tarot/Oracle Reading Card
with Amy Schimel
May Card is Strength – VIII
Being in flow with our instincts and letting them guide us, while simultaneously being prepared to be flexible in case we need to pivot. These 2 skills together will build our strength this month in preparation for accessing deeper understanding of ourselves, a power that is accessible for everyone. In the Major Arcana of Tarot, Strength is the 1st card of the 2nd level or phase of self-realization. It is a turning point when all of our basic needs have been addressed, and we feel called to begin the journey of self-reflection.

I used my Celtic tarot deck for this month’s collective message. The Strength card has a somewhat obvious message and is similar to the Rider, Waite, Smith deck. It talks about doing shadow work and ultimately accepting and understanding your shadow so well that you no longer need to repress it. It becomes your power.

I really like the symbolism on this deck’s card though. The patches of both snow and grass/flowers hint at a feeling of disorientation—it’s spring but still can be cold and you have to be prepared for any kind of weather. Hence, the woman’s fur boots and jacket with bare legs. She’s holding an apple which also suggests the message of preparedness because she obviously stored apples from last Fall’s harvest to keep her fed during the winter. Perhaps it also signals a loss of innocence in reference to the apple in the Adam and Eve story--we can no longer ignore our shadows/instincts/desires and let them “run the show” so to speak.

It looks like the bear is semi-domesticated, but I imagine he has just woken up from hibernation and is hungry. It seems like the woman is caring for the bear and will likely share the apple with it. The message here is if you don’t take care of yourself, including your basic needs, there is a good chance your inner animal instincts, like a hungry bear, may devour your judgment.  And vice versa, if you are overly rational you risk never reaching potential heights of creativity and aliveness. Acknowledging, understanding and addressing your needs, desires and weaknesses is the way to build strength for the next stage of the cycle we are in.

Love,
Amy
