Welcome to The Bend!

Welcome to the first edition of The Bend. You’re getting this because, at some point, our paths have crossed, maybe through parks and recreation, a project, a trail ride, or a good conversation about how community and the outdoors fit together. This little newsletter is where I slow down long enough to share a few reflections, insights, and things I’m working on through Oxbow.

The Bend will follow a simple rhythm each week. The Eddy Line opens with a one-line thought or observation, something short enough to remember but worth thinking about. What the Current Pulled Toward dives a little deeper into where the previous week’s energy went, whether that’s a project, a partnership, or a personal lesson learned. Signal Fire highlights a person, place, or initiative that deserves some attention. And One Thought Worth Sitting With closes things out with a brief reflection or quote that will hopefully help guide you through whatever you may be dealing with.

It’s part journal, part field note, and hopefully something that makes you pause for a moment before diving back into the current.

If this isn’t your kind of thing, no worries at all - you can unsubscribe below with no hurt feelings. But if you know someone who might appreciate a thoughtful read about purpose, place, and the outdoors, I’d be grateful if you passed it along. Thanks for being here at the start.

What the Current Pulled Toward
Lately the current’s been pulling hard toward anxiety, that restless place where everything feels urgent and nothing feels meaningful. The to-do lists multiply, the inbox hums, and my thoughts start racing each other to absolutely nowhere.

When that happens, I’ve learned to stop paddling so hard and drift back to my why. Why I chose this work. Why I love building community. Why I love connecting people to place. Why I love watching an idea take root and become something real. The noise doesn’t disappear but it quiets just a little when I remember that purpose isn’t found at the end of a checklist, it’s woven through the moments I slow down enough to notice.

So I take a breath, walk outside, feel the ground under my feet, and remind myself that direction matters more than speed.

The river always finds its way.

- Mike.
Signal Fire

This time next year, Oxbow is heading overseas, and you’re invited. We’re partnering with EF Adventures for a guided multi-adventure journey through Germany and Austria, exploring Bavaria, Tyrol, and Salzburg by foot, bike, paddle, and rail.

It’s part cultural immersion and part active escape, with alpine trails, lakeside yoga, village cafés, and the kind of views that make you forget your phone exists. This isn’t a tour bus vacation; it’s a chance to travel intentionally, move through landscapes at a human pace, and connect with a group that values curiosity as much as comfort.

We’re hosting a general interest meeting on Tuesday, October 21 to walk through the itinerary, costs, travel details, and what to expect on an Oxbow-led adventure. If you’ve ever wanted to explore Europe beyond the postcards, this is your moment.

This week's theme: Patience.

“We do not need to go out and find love; rather, we need to be still and let love discover us.”
