The Big Four: Anxiety, Trauma, Shame, and Fatigue
|
The Be Fully Alive Podcast
75% of us experience anxiety - racing thoughts, shallow breathing, a feeling of vigilance and tension.
70% of us have experienced at least one traumatic event that overwhelmed our capacity to cope - our nervous system froze, we dissociated, we panicked.
85% of us have felt shame - the belief that something is wrong with us, the feeling that who we are is flawed.
And 76% of us feel exhausted most of the time - we are depleted, running on empty. All of these are normal responses to stress, peril and intensity. And all of them impact our capacity for intimacy. Anxiety, trauma, shame and fatigue are vital in alerting us to danger and imbalance. Designed to be temporary, these signals can become our default, lasting far beyond the stressful or dangerous event, creating tension and reaction in the body that separates us from people and experiences we wish to be close to. We live in a world filled with incomplete expression. Space is rarely given for full experience - especially for anxiety, trauma, shame and fatigue. And so we live in a state of perpetual unease, aching, without even realizing, for resolution. There's good news. Our bodies know how to regulate. When given the space to complete what has gone incomplete for so long - we discover our body's tremendous capacity for resilience and the true intimacy this resilience reveals. I look forward to traveling this road of completion with you this week through these episodes.

"The time will come when, with elation, you will greet yourself arriving at your own door, in your own mirror, and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat. You will love again the stranger who was your self. Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored for another, who knows you by heart. Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit.
Feast on your life."

 | Episode 277 . Working With What Is
|
The Be Fully Alive Podcast
In our practice episode we'll take first steps toward allowing what is incomplete in us to find expression. Gently. Slowly. With stability and self-reference.
We'll ground the frayed threads of anxiety through regulation breathing and progressive release, shifting from vigilance to safety.
We'll meet trauma with resourcing, pendulation and completion, infusing our practice with reverence and compassion.
We'll name the feelings we feel that are connected to shame, rebuilding empathy and self-acceptance. Falling back in love with the world and our place in it.
We'll explore a rest-assessment and boundary setting practice to create rest where there is fatigue. Bring our natural desire to be engaged with life - alive again.
Four practices to work with what is. Bringing closer to our natural selves and each other.

 | Episode 278 . Diane Shares What She Hasn't Told Anyone
|
The Be Fully Alive Podcast
Tonight, Diana shares with the group something she's never told anyone outside of therapy.
"Three years ago, I was assaulted by someone I was dating."
The room goes quiet.
"I said I wanted to slow down. He didn't stop. And I froze. Couldn't move. Couldn't speak. I just... left my body."
This is Diana's story.
A story of some of the ways trauma lives in the body. How the freeze response can continue years later. How she's been unable to be present during intimacy since.
"My body doesn't know the difference between then and now."
Diana was seen—in her trauma and her courage.
And she wasn't rejected.
This is what attunement can look like.
Not trying to fix. Just being present. Bearing witness.
Trauma healing often doesn't happen in a single conversation. It happens in layers. Over time.
Each time we tell the truth. Each time we let ourselves be witnessed in a safe space. Each time we practice vulnerability with those we trust.
