Reggae Festival Guide Catches up with Charles Byrd of Reggae Town Music
|
Reggae Festival Guide Catches up with Charles Byrd of Reggae Town Music
Reggae Festival Guide catches up with Charles Byrd, a San Francisco Reggae Promoter and Founder of Reggae Town Music. These questions highlight his history, mission and vision for the future. https://reggaetownmusic.com
Five Questions with Charles Byrd of Reggae Town Music
Q1: Charles, how did you get started as a reggae promoter in San Francisco? A: I founded Reggae in the Park in San Francisco. It successfully ran for ten years as a major community fundraiser. What I’m most proud of is that in its final year, we had the honor of headlining the late, legendary Jimmy Cliff. That experience cemented my commitment to bringing world-class reggae to the Bay Area and making sure the culture stays visible and respected.
Q2: You’ve worked with some major reggae artists over the years. Who are a few that stand out? A: I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the greats—Sugar Minott, Sister Carol, Don Carlos, Frankie Paul, and Jah Big. Each one brought something unique to the stage and to the community. Those experiences helped shape my approach as a promoter. It deepened my appreciation for the history and evolution of reggae music.
FUTURE PLANS
Q3: What are your future plans for Reggae Town Music? A: The big vision is to launch Reggae in the Park 2.0 in San Francisco. We’re building what will become San Francisco’s largest reggae festival—celebrating Bay Area reggae artists and featuring authentic Afro-Caribbean cuisine, arts, and crafts. It’s not just a concert; it’s a cultural experience. It will be designed to honor both the music and the community that supports it.
Q4: You’ve mentioned collaborating with cultural institutions. Why is that important? A: Reggae is community music, and it thrives when it’s rooted in the spaces that represent our culture. That’s why Reggae Town Music plans to produce concerts and festivals in collaboration with local cultural institutions—historic arts centers, community organizations, and cultural landmarks. These partnerships help ground the music in the communities that helped shape it.
Q5: What role do you see Reggae Town Music playing in the future of reggae music? A: Music genres naturally evolve and sometimes decline—just look at what has happened with jazz, blues, and even R&B. Reggae deserves a strong presence in the mainstream. Reggae Town Music intends to be one of the promoters who keeps the culture alive and visible. Part of that future will be embracing the growing connection between reggae and AfroBeats, creating fresh opportunities to reach younger audiences while honoring reggae’s roots.

For Black History Month, Terry Ganzie Delivers a Message of Unity With 'Same Africans'
Renowned Reggae and Dancehall artist Terry Ganzie, a defining voice of conscious music, releases his powerful new single “Same Africans,” promoting African unity and collective pride during Black History Month and beyond.
“Same Africans” reinforces the message that no matter which African nation one comes from, African people share a common identity, history, and purpose. The song serves as both a celebration of heritage and a call for unity, inspiring pride while reaffirming excellence across the global African diaspora. Its release also aligns with Reggae Month, a time dedicated to honoring Reggae’s cultural impact and its long-standing role as a global voice for consciousness, resistance, and unity.
The release follows Ganzie’s impactful song “We Rise,” a track rooted in resilience that took on an anthemic significance in Jamaica and other Caribbean nations following Hurricane Melissa, despite being released prior to the storm.
A defining voice of Dancehall, Terry Ganzie played a critical role in shaping the genre’s foundational sound during its golden era. Known for his sharp lyricism and socially conscious messaging, Ganzie helped establish Dancehall as a powerful platform for empowerment and cultural expression. His influential catalog includes standout hits such as "Welcome The Outlaw," "Whosoever Will May Come," "Who’s Responsible," "Jah Will Help" and more,
which continue to resonate across generations.
Produced by Temps Music and AfroWorld Music, “Same Africans” continues Ganzie’s tradition of conscious Reggae and Dancehall that uplifts, empowers, and pushes the mission of unity forward.

ANTHONY B, born Keith ANTHONY Blair in 1976, Clarks Towns, Jamaica, began singing in church, like many other reggae legends. After having cut his teeth with Shaggy Hi-Power local sound system, and met other artists such as Determine, Mega Banton, Ricky General, Terror Fabulous or even Little Devon in Portmore, he left for Kingston in 1992. Arrived in the capital, he was quickly spotted by famed producer Richard 'Bell' Bello of Star Trail Records. He released his first single in 1993 "The Living Is Hard", but it was in 1996 with the success of "Repentance Time" that his career really began. Then follow the hits "Rumor", "Raid di barn" and "Fire pon Rome" on his first album "Real Revolutionary" with these explosive lyrics which will make his notoriety, and which will remain engraved in the history of Jamaican music. Since his beginnings marked by Otis Redding and Peter Tosh, who will become his claimed models, and his studies on the teaching of Marcus Garvey, ANTHONY B has been the messenger of political and social demands. The themes he discusses in his songs are rooted in the rasta culture, with a revolutionary touch in addition. Over time, sharpening his pen and injecting strong messages into each of his tracks, the artist has established himself as the voice of the poor, of oppressed peoples across the world. Today, ANTHONY B has to his credit numerous albums that have become classics such as "Universal Struggle", "Street Knowledge" or "Freedom Fighter", hundreds of hits, covered and remixed by top-names production, and a countless sold-out concerts across the world. Proof that ANTHONY B has never left center stage, asserting himself today as a leading artist of dancehall and reggae.
