Sweet Marjoram: Joy of the Mountains
 Replenishment * Relaxation

A hardy perennial, Sweet Marjoram, Origanum marjorana, can grow in the harshest soil and be among the first to poke through the soil, even in the coldest Northeastern springs.

That first sighting in my mountain garden always brings a smile to my face. It wasn’t until I began to study this gentle and versatile herb and essential oil that I learned its name – from the Greek oros ganos – means “joy of the mountains”.

Widely cultivated in Europe and North Africa, Marjoram has a long history of herbal use.

For the Greeks, Marjoram was a symbol of love and honor, and an offering of peace to souls departed.

Used for cooking and medicine, it was considered to be an effective tonic that can both calm and fortify the nerves.

Sweet Marjoram essential oil is also known to benefit the nervous system, as it calms over-thinking and worry, and dispels nervous exhaustion. On an energetic level, Marjoram’s warming herbal properties help move stagnant chi and clear cold dampness. As a respiratory tonic, Marjoram is also known for its antispasmodic properties that act directly on the vagus nerve -- the 10th cranial nerve, as it helps to control spastic coughs, including whooping cough.

Any essential oil that calms the nerves also balances emotions. Marjoram stimulates the body’s ability to replenish itself with comfort and nourishment, as it restores our connection with the energy of Earth.

Maya's Herbal Message:
When Marjoram appears on your path, you are being given a gentle reminder by Mother Earth to slow down and breathe, replenish, and find the joy growing around you.
