Episode 357 . Rewilding the Erotic Body
The Be Fully Alive Podcast

In the basement of my grandparents' home, there was a bookshelf, filled with books and old National Geographic magazines.

Summers, after a breakfast of frosted flakes and half a grapefruit, my grandmother, sister and I would go down to the garden to pick tomatoes, melons and zinnias.

My grandmother's garden, like my grandmother herself, was untamed, yet wise in the way life is when nobody's watching. Quiet. Vibrant. And full of secrets. A patch of flowers and vegetables that stretched from the house, down to my grandfather's cattle pasture overlooking Boone Lake, perched in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains.

I still remember the smell of sunlight those late summer mornings.

After we finished foraging for dinner and flowers, my sister and I would slip away to the basement, which was really more of an underground garage, cool, dark and open to the same view that included the garden, the cattle, the lake and the mountains beyond.

We'd spend the morning, and most of the day, with those books and magazines. Hours. And hours and hours. Breathing in the scent of old paper and printer's ink. Transported to new worlds.

There was one book, with a cover of worn green cotton, that I loved more than all the rest. A book filled with  pictures of caterpillars becoming butterflies. And tadpoles becoming frogs. Seeds becoming flowers. Hand-drawn, hand-colored images tracing strange beginnings that somehow led to unimaginable maturities.

Which brings me here, to this new season of podcast episodes on the rewilding of the sexual body. The research, that has taken me from early Greek mythology, to revolutionary rewilding philosophy, has enraptured me in a way almost nothing ever has, save that one book bound in worn green cotton, nestled away in my grandmother's bookshelf.

I hope you'll enjoy listening.

"Rewilding of the kind that interests me does not seek to control the natural world, to re-create a particular ecosystem or landscape, but – having brought back some of the missing species – to allow it to find its own way.”
