Episode 360 . Uncultivated Sensation
The Be Fully Alive Podcast

Every two weeks in the summer, my grandmother would back her four-door Chevrolet Caprice out of her underground garage of wonders and take my sister and me to the library.

The Caprice was a palatial icon of automotive engineering, making it necessary for those of shorter stature to first get a running start, then dive into the backseat to embark. Once our little legs were indelibly glued to the vinyl seats, off we'd go, the summer breeze and occasional frighteningly confused iridescent green June bug wafting through our hair.

Once we got to the library, the three of us would pour ourselves out of the car, gather the maximum number of books allowed, present our library cards, check out our books, and fly back home. To read.

My grandmother loved to read. Afternoons, once she'd finished the breakfast dishes, The New York Times crossword puzzle and her gardening, she'd sit in her recliner, take the book she was reading into her hands, pull out the bookmark, and disappear into another world.

It was this, the stillness that filled the room when my grandmother read, the way her life seemed somehow connected to all the lives and stories she read, that made me a reader too.

This week's episodes continue the exploration of that which is untamed inside us. And the wild roots we all share.

I hope you'll enjoy listening.

This week's episodes . . . Monday goes underground, into the living, sensing intelligence beneath desire, arousal, and pleasure. Wednesday is a guided practice in uncultivated sensation. And Friday, we encounter Vera, her husband Sören, and the reflex to pull away.
