My other set of grandparents, my mother's family, lived 20 miles up the road in Fordtown. Their house sat on a bend in the road, next to a shallow little pond and an old weeping willow.
Spending the night with Mamaw and Papaw meant waking up summer mornings to the bright blue smell of butane catching an unfiltered Camel. Coffee brewing. Country ham frying in a cast iron skillet. The sound of Mamaw rolling biscuits. Papaw clearing his throat in the kitchen where he sat beside the table, elbows on his knees, looking off into the distance toward some past or future destination known only to himself.
Mornings were for dreaming.
Breakfast was overseen by Jesus and his twelve disciples, who looked down on us from The Last Supper, high up on the cedar paneling. Jesus blessing the coffee. The country ham with red-eye gravy. The scrambled eggs and tomatoes. The homemade biscuits. And every inch of that ebony wood-grain Formica table and the souls gathered around it.
And though it might sound anything but, Mamaw and Papaw's house was a place of encouragement for the incorrigible. A place where just about anything goes. And my brother, my sister and I, along with an occasional cousin or two, made the best of it.
We curled up inside big cardboard drums and rolled down the hill in front of the house. We stayed up all night eating Cap'n Crunch while the windows shook with Papaw's snoring. We flew through the air on weeping willow branches. We hid. We set things on fire. We stayed up too late. We got up too early. We fully mastered being. Children.
Papaw was strong and silent, a provider and a protector. Mamaw was soft and strong and wild. She'd burst into tears if we so much as skinned a knee, our bodies a part of hers.
I grew up knowing I was loved.
This new week of podcast episodes explores the edge. The places where we meet. In kitchens. On rural back roads. In the hearts of our grandparents. The places where we discover who we really are.
I hope you'll enjoy listening.
