J & J Marine Group Reclaimed Industrial Site Home To State-Of-The-Art Boatyard

J & J Marine of Somerset, Massachusetts received the American Boat Builders and Repairers Association (ABBRA) 2007 Award for Excellence in Technology at the International Marina & Boatyard Conference in Atlanta in January. The ABBRA award is given annually to the marine service or repair yard that has developed or applied an advanced or innovative technology system or procedure to their facility.

Located on the Taunton River about 18 miles by water from Newport, RI, J&J Marine's six acre complex sits on the site of an old shellac factory. Partners Jeff Botelho (left in photo) and Steve Anderson (right in photo) weathered three years of lawsuits, skeptical bankers and the US Army Corp of Engineers to realize their vision of a state-of-the-art, efficient and worker-friendly boat service facility on the reclaimed industrial site.

"When I first looked at our site, there were three dead skunks, four dead foxes, 40 dead cats, 1,800 55-gallon drums of mystery liquids, a badly leaking roof and a 300-year history of mixed industrial use that made chemical contamination a virtual certainty," said J&J partner Steve Anderson. "I thought to myself, this'll be perfect," he recalled.

J&J has 90,000 sq ft. of indoor workspace with separately-zoned air conditioning and heating to provide a consistent year-round work environment. The fiberglass shop has a Dustron dust control booth, which draws contaminated air through four banks of 24 filters. A 125,000 cubic ft. positive pressure sealed spray booth features computer-controlled temperature, humidity, and airflow. Employees working in the booth each have their own supplied air respirator system.

The J&J woodworking shop has the tools needed to produce everything from cabin soles to intricate interior trim and the tower fabrication shop is equipped with state of the art fabricating equipment.

In the summer of 2007, after years of effort by MMTA, the MA Workforce Development Community and Educators and spearheaded by the South Coastal Workforce Board and Massasoit Community College, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Executive Office of Labor & Workforce Development formally recognized the critical need to support the competitive growth of the MA Marine Trades industry.

Massasoit Community College (MCC), in partnership with the MA Marine Trades Association (MMTA), Bristol Community College and MY TURN, INC, were awarded a $425,000 grant, now known as the Jobs in Boating Grant (JIB) designed to increase the number of skilled workers, especially marine technicians, through customized training. The grant will increase the supply of workers for the industry by introducing youth, job seekers, returning veterans, and incumbent workers, to sustainable wage jobs and career ladders.

Starting Saturday, February 2 and again on Wednesday, February 6 the Jobs In Boating (JIB) grant at Massasoit CC, Canton will launch its first introductory course focusing on the career opportunities in recreational boating. The 15 week Marine Trades Basic Certificate course will be funded in full through JIB for interested residents of southeastern Massachusetts. Upon completion participants will be awarded an industry-recognized certificate; based on prior experience and training this may lead to an entry level or more advanced job. Industry employers will be asked to open their business to students and offer tours, demonstrations and the opportunity to talk with current marine techs.

A recreational marine trades' job fair is being planned for March at the One-Stop Career Center in Plymouth. This will be free of charge to any industry employer with job openings. Further information about the job fair will be available in February.

2- Day technical training in Outboard and Inboard/Outboard engine systems are led by MITEC Council member and AMTECH Director, John Bernier, and will be held at Massasoit Community College's Canton Campus. Three management workshops -- foundations, operations and customer service -- will be led by Jacquie Collins of Partnering for Performance and will be held at The Tavern at Granite Links in Quincy.

All of the spring 2008 training is designed to bring quality and comprehensive training to our Massachusetts' marine industry just prior to the run up to high season. Each year these workshops sell out early: don't delay-register today.

A Message From The ABYC Education Team

In an effort to increase brand awareness of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and educate boat owners on the role of ABYC in standards writing and marine education, ABYC has teamed up with PassageMaker University to offer a two-day "Electrical Basics for the Boat Owner" course.

The next course will be held May 20 - 21, 2008 at the PassageMaker University in Anacortes, WA.

There are a lot of boat owners out there who are interested in ABYC and our standards. We want to be able to provide them with the information they are looking for, but also let them know that when services are needed - whether buying a new boat, repairing a boat or employing a surveyor - they should seek out ABYC members! We would like our members to experience increased awareness of ABYC from their customers, and enhance the value of their investment in ABYC membership and education.

MARINE TRADES INDUSTRY LEADERS ADVANCE THE BUSINESS OF BOATING IN MASSACHUSETTS

On Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at the Quincy Marriott, the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA) and the Massachusetts Marine Trades Educational Trust (MMTET) proudly hosted 280 marine industry professionals and special guests at the Third Annual Business of Boating in Massachusetts Professional Development Conference.

Recognizing that every marine business team member is critical to insuring prosperity - from dock hands and office administrators to top sales staff and lead technicians - the 2008 Conference offered a broad menu of educational opportunities for both the novice and veteran employee. Built around 4 educational tracks -- Operations, Service/Repair, Sales/Marketing, and Administration - conference goers had access to 22 different workshops on topics such as diminishing public access, overcoming regulatory hurdles, maximizing show room opportunities and grasping the "quick and dirty" of computer system cleanup.

During the luncheon awards ceremony, Massachusetts' marine industry honored its champions including MMTA's 2007 Legislator of the Year, Senate President Therese Murray, who lent vocal support in favor of the Jobs in Boating workforce development grant recently awarded to MMTET and its partners for the benefit of the industry.

Also attending the Conference was the 2005 Legislator of the Year and founding Chairman of the Boating Caucus, Representative Anthony J. Verga (Gloucester), as well as regulatory officials from EPA, DEP and CZM. Chairman Verga delighted the crowd with his announcement that legislation to streamline the process of removing abandoned vessels from marinas and boatyards (House Bill 4188) was en route to the Governor's desk for signature.

Several employers were thrilled to learn of the selection of their nominees for 2007 Marine Trades Professional of the Year, with awards going to James Milne of Baert Marine, Cheryl Gendron of Mattapoisett Boatyard, and Tim Lovasco of Hawthorne Cove Marina.

It was with great pleasure that the Conference Committee recognized Ren Nichols of Allen Harbor Marine Service, Commodore Uniform and Cape Cod Wind & Weather as the 2007 Marine Industry Advocate of the Year. Mr. Nichols, a Past MMTA President and current Board member, is a tireless volunteer on behalf of the Massachusetts marine trades.

Given the positive working relationships that MMTA has cultivated on behalf of its members with key state and federal environmental officials, Immediate Past President of MMTA, Greg Glavin, was delighted to honor Robin Lacey of CZM as the 2007 Environmental Educator of the Year.

In recognition of his dedicated work to help marina owners and operators comply with existing and emerging water quality regulations, CZM's Robin Lacey was presented with the Educator of the Year Award by the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA) on January 29. "For almost 10 years, Robin has patiently and proactively educated Massachusetts marine businesses on their responsibilities as stewards of the coastal environment. If one of our member firms is overwhelmed with the complexity of a specific environmental compliance regulation, they can count on Robin to swiftly answer their questions with clear and concise information," said MMTA's Greg Glavin. "In doing so, he has shepherded an entire industry in the direction of environmental compliance solutions that are effective, attainable, and affordable," he continued. "Robin is firmly committed to helping make all of this easier for the marina operators, who are more than willing to do all they can to keep the water that their businesses depend on as clean as possible," said CZM Director Leslie-Ann McGee. "We are very proud that he was recognized by MMTA for his efforts, and look forward to our continued partnership with them."

Following some side-splitting South Shore comedy relief provided by Monahan Marine's own Tommy Dunham, participants attended afternoon workshops and regrouped for a closing reception during which raffle and scavenger hunt prizes were awarded. Attracted by terrific raffle prizes ranging in value from $100 to $400, MMTET's scholarship program raised $2,200!

The raffle would not have been possible without the generous prize donations of Hobs Board Shop/Baert Marine, BottomsUp Detail, Cape Cod Wind & Weather, Constitution Marina B&B, Donovan Marine, Marriott Quincy, MMTA, Onset Bay Marina, Port Supply, Riverfront Marine, and 3A Marine. Also generating much buzz throughout the day were three prizes valued at $100 each awarded to those whose names were drawn from scavenger hunt question sheets completed by visiting each table sponsor.

"Just in its third year The Business of Boating in Massachusetts has become a must for marine trades' men and women not only for educational purposes but for networking and getting an overall pulse of the industry. The high level of attendance speaks volumes about the professionalism of the members of the Massachusetts marine trades, all of whom are committed to improving their customer satisfaction as well as maintaining and growing the industry," stated Kurt Saunders, President of MMTA.
