My name is Janice. Nearly a year ago,
my husband and I found out that we were expecting our second child. We
were elated! Our son Nate has brought more joy to our lives than we ever
thought possible and we were thrilled to grow our family.
Within 10 weeks I learned that I had
miscarried. I was shocked and saddened, but committed to having another
child. By May 2009, we learned I was again pregnant. This time, I
miscarried after 11 weeks.
We talked to our doctor, who told us
about possible chromosomal abnormalities. We also did research, where we
found information about potentially harmful chemicals used in everyday
products like laundry detergent, shampoo, and nail polish.
I was shocked to read that studies
have linked certain toxic chemicals to reproductive problems in women
and men, including infertility, miscarriage, and birth defects.
I learned that of the tens of
thousands of chemicals used in products that you and I buy at the store,
our government has only required testing of 200 of them. That means
there are thousands of chemicals in our products that have never been
tested for their impacts to our health.
I don’t know how much, or even if, the
types of products I used played any role in my miscarriages. But I do
know that toxic chemicals linked to reproductive problems have no place
in any product we use on a regular basis.
