In a world where our attentions are constantly divided among several concerns and tasks, it's hard to imagine having a singular focus on any one thing. Hypnosis helps us to do just that - focus our attention while relaxing our mind, and freeing our self of the superficial judgments or criticisms that inhibit transformation and growth.

Yet, hypnotherapy, or hypnosis, can do just that. By slowing your brainwaves down to a deeply meditative state, a hypnotherapist helps you to affect your thoughts. Creating a singular focus and relaxed state of mind is immeasurable in dealing with individual issues.

Hypnosis can help with a broad spectrum of issues ranging from your physical well-being to self-control, and psychological well-being. Your hypnotherapist will create a custom treatment plan that suits your needs, and will discuss this with you before starting treatment. Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective treatment, and can be used on its own, or as a compliment to traditional therapy, medical care, or alternative medical care programs.

Hypnotherapy encompasses a myriad of techniques. Most commonly referenced is the ever popular post-hypnotic suggestion ("When you wake up, every time I clap my hands you will bark like a dog"), but the reality is there are over a dozen recognizable techniques for hypnotherapy.

Each of these methods is vastly different in their appeal to the subconscious mind. Your professional practitioner will elect the method that best fits your treatment. Here are 3 commonly used hypnosis techniques:
  • Traditional Hypnosis is when direct suggestions are made to the subconscious. This method works well for many people, but may meet with resistance in the more stubborn types. This is accomplished through deep relaxation and a near trace-like state
  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP creates the desired outcome by giving your mind new emotional and cues to work with
  • Subliminal. conspiracy-theories aside, subliminal messages help your mind reprogram itself, by avoiding contact with the  conscious mind. The conscious mind is given the overlying track to listen to, such as music or film, while there is another track that is picked up by the subconscious, but not the conscious. This redirect is particularly useful for the stubborn minds that don't like to accept new ways of thinking.

Many people associate hypnotherapy with a high risk to your psychological wellbeing, or think that they will wind up with strange tics and socially awkward behaviors - like clucking like a chicken every time you hear the word "egg".

Conversely, numerous people seek hypnotherapy without giving a second thought to the potential negative effects of hypnosis. There are few risks associated with hypnotherapy, however as with any remedy, it is important to understand the risks before undergoing treatment, and the steps to avoid these follies.

Before opting for hypnotherapy, have a diagnosis. Whether it is being overweight, clinically depressed, or hypnotherapy, you must obtain a proper diagnosis from a medical practitioner - physician or psychologist - to understand what is being treated. This is especially true if your condition is psychological in nature (for example, a phobia or anxiety), in which case it is important to first be evaluated by a psychiatrist. Without an accurate diagnosis, it is possible that hypnotherapy may exacerbate your symptoms.

Very rare, but one of the most dangerous effects of hypnotherapy is the development of "false memories" fabricated by the unconscious mind. This is a hazard in particular when seeking treatment from untrained practitioners. It's ideal to seek references and information regarding your practitioners credentials to avoid this dangerous pitfall.

Most people have simple-origin fears - such as a fear of heights, or a fear of the dark, that stems from our biological survival response. Many of us also have idiosyncratic fears. These are more complex fears that have deeper psychological roots. The emotional experience today is an instinctive response that stems from the development of your conscious thought, and is based on the perception of survival. To your mind, your social phobia serves to keep you healthy. To you, it's a hindrance.

Treatment for basic fears is simple and is usually accomplished within a few sessions. Treatment for the deeper phobias requires a little more involvement. Our subconscious has accepted whatever psychological truths have been programmed into us through the experiences that we are now afraid of. For example, if as a child, you were lost in the department store and then were spanked for it, you may have a subconscious fear of being lost. This fear may be intense or mild - regardless, it interferes with your life and creates some degree of anxiety and stress.

The fears we experience may be intense phobic experiences, or they might manifest as feeling stuck in our lives, relationships, or jobs. The underlying emotional issues must be resolved in order to completely clear the phobia.  Hypnotherapy will allow the patient and practitioner to uncover these deep seated issues and will allow the patient to deal with them in a healthy way.

Will Power
We all have nasty little habits that we wish we could overcome - and we all have those moments where our will power is challenged. Many of us feel as though we have weak willpower, or are unable to overcome these challenges.

Here are 3 surefire ways to beat the challenge of your will power:

1.  Develop a new mantra: I can quit smoking; I am a healthy eater; I feel joyful. Repeat throughout the day, even when you don't feel challenged. It will make challenges easier when they do creep up

2.  Redirect: Have a redirection planned. If you know chocolate is your diet weakness, have another snack on hand when you will be around chocolate. If you smoke with your morning coffee, drink your coffee somewhere else and chase it with water or a light snack instead

3.  Have backup: Keep a list of the reasons you are changing your eating habits, have a friend to call when you need a drink, and have a backup calming plan when the anxiety of changing habits gets overwhelming

Bonus: The best thing you can do for your will power is to believe that it is strong. When you start believing this, you will experience more success.
