Allergies and Sinus Pressure
Healthy Alternatives to Coping with Nature

The season of Spring is a time of transition and gives new life to our surrounding environment. Although, the beauty of the season is immaculate many of us have to cope with changes in climate and pollen related allergies as spring arrives. Many over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications often take a toll on your nervous system. Fortunately there are healthier alternatives to coping with allergies and sinus pressure.

Consider the benefits of some of these easy and inexpensive treatments:

-Daily Facial Massage using pads of your fingers in upward, sweeping

motions. Our sinus cavities are located above our eyebrows and below

our eyes to each side of the nose, gentle massage in these areas can

loosen sinus congestion.

-Homemade Saline Nasal Spray- 1/2 cup purified water, 1/2 teaspoon

salt, and a pinch of baking soda *Use 3-5 times daily to improve nasal

congestion

-Ginger Herbal Tea Formula- Boil Fresh ginger in water *add honey and

lemon to taste

-Steam Bath for face- Fill large bowl with boiling water and add 2-4 drops

of Eucalyptus oil, use towel to drape over head/bowl begin inhale steam

vapors for about five minutes, remembering to take deep breaths

through mouth and nose.

Cultivating a Gardening Habit
Energizing your life and uplifting your spirit

As natures transforms in spring, we are more apt to be open and aware of our own personal and internal needs for transition. Many feel the urge to be more active, make changes in their daily diets, and some choose to re-center their being by way of meditation and exploration of various healing arts (including massage therapy!!) Do you have the desire to incorporate these things into your life?? Well, there's one activity in which you can accomplish all of these objectives: Gardening!!

Encouraging Exercise
Studies show that vigorous digging burns 500 calories an hour, weeding burns 210 calories, and mowing the lawn burns 400 calories. As a moderate exercise, gardening has been found to decrease the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and a study at the University of Arkansas found that gardening was almost as effective as weight lifting in reducing the risk for osteoporosis in women. So instead of taking that indoor aerobics class this summer, try mowing the lawn or planting an herb garden.

As with any exercise regimen, the key is to start at a comfortable pace and gradually work your way up to longer, more difficult activities. Your heart rate should be about the same as when you take a brisk walk.

Improving Your Diet
Gardening will also likely help you eat better. Research shows that people who grow gardens eat more vegetables and fruits than those who don't. Growing fresh herbs, even in a container on the deck or balcony, is another great way to add flavor and freshness to home-cooked meals and an incentive to try new recipes.

Boosting Your Social Life
Gardening can also be quite social. Whether at a garden club, a community garden, or an online forum, people love to share ideas, solve common problems, and connect through mutual interests.

Reducing stress
And finally, gardening is a great way to manage stress. Spending time outside and tuning in to the rhythms of nature, we're reminded to be patient, slow down, and breathe the fresh air. Whether growing flowers, vegetables, or herbs, a garden reminds us of our connection to life and the abundance that nature so freely gives.

Self Care:How to prolong the positive effects of massage
Don't we all wish that the fuzzy, good feelings that we receive after a good massage could linger just a little bit longer? Well, with a little bit of homework and good self care, you can!
Remember to refer to these important guidelines in the days/weeks following your massage:

Massage Frequency Check-in with how you feel before the massage and then afterwards, pay attention to your body’s signals and get massage when your body reminds you that it needs it.

Be consistent with getting massage Don’t go long periods without receiving massage if you can help it, your body and mind deserve the attention at regular intervals.

Drink Water! Common guidelines state that we need 64oz. a day to help our body eliminate toxins and cleanse the circulatory system.

Stretch, Stretch, Stretch! Another helpful habit is stretching between massages to maintain joint mobility, prevent muscles from tightening up again, and keeping the life energy flowing.

Exercise Working out can also help maintain the benefits of massage, and this habit should be continually cultivated.

Body Awareness After a massage, respect how your body feels. If your body seems to ask for rest, give in to that demand. After a massage, take a hot bath when you get home, you are reminding your body of the therapy you just received and you will further improve your sleep patterns.

Diet Finally, since you've just rid the body of toxins, support the body's renewed state by adhering to a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which will continue the detoxification process. Lay off the espresso and all adrenaline-challenges for a time -- which would short-circuit relaxation anyway -- and enjoy the calm.
