10 Can't Miss Winter Gardening Tips

1. Take it easy wth any kind of de-icer/salts around plants. If you must use them, be careful of any runoff into plants, lawn or surface water. Better to use fertilizer.

2. Be certain to rotate houseplants weekly to keep them uniform in shape and growth.

3. While you're at it, keep houseplat leaves free of dust. A shower now and then should do the trick!

4. Haven't put n your plow stakes? May be too late if the ground is frozen.

5. Always keep bird feeders stocked for the winter. Plus an unfrozen water source is a real treat for our feathered friends.

6. Avoid walking on frozen turf; bare spots next spring could be used as evidence!

7. Seed catalogs are arriving daily. Before you order, look back at last year's garden. If you kept a journal (how many times did we talk about this) it will be easy to remember what to grow and not to grow!

8. Need some flower power in your life? A visit to a local botanic garden could be ust what th edoctor ordered! Many offer indoor greenhouses and conservatories for public enjoyment and education.

9. Recycle your Christmas tree - use cut branches as mulch in the garden. Another use: prop the tree up in an area of your garden and let the birds find shelter. Locate a bird feeder nearby for encouragement.

10. Check stored canna, dahlia and other summer flowering bulbs for sgns of rot. Dispose as necessary.
