2. Sign of the Times

A.) Spotted in an 8th-grade language arts classroom:

And you thought learning English was easy!

I did not object to the object.
When shot at, the dove dove in the bushes.
He could lead if he could get the lead out.
After a number of injections my jaw got number.
The bandage was wound around the wound.
The farm was used to produce produce.
The dump was so full I had to refuse the refuse.
They were too close to the door to close it.
He thought it was time to present the present.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
The soldier decided to desert his desert in the desert.

B.) Noticed on the wall in Stoney Creek Middle School:

Three Beliefs

I am smart.                      You are smart.

I have talent.                    You have talent.

I can amount to something.   You can amount to something.

3. Bumper Sticker

Seen on a Dodge Ram wagon in Harrisburg, PA:

99% of being smart
is knowing what you're dumb at.

4. Spirit Whisperer Contemplation

What if the important part of what just happened is not what just happened? What if the important part is what you choose to do with what just happened?

5. Article: Team Building

By Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller

Is there a grade-level team or a discipline team that you are part of at your school? Do you have a support group or a mastermind group to which you belong? What about a negotiations committee, spirit group, or parent advisory committee? Maybe you meet with other new teachers, have a coaches' club, or a Thursday morning coffee club.

Regardless of the function or name of your team, enthusiasm is necessary for the creation and maintenance of an effective, mutually supportive team. Below are the ten tenets of an enthusiastic team.

Ten Tenets of an Enthusiastic Team

1. Help each other be right, rather than wrong.
2. Look for ways to make new ideas work, rather than reasons they wont.
3. If in doubt, check it out, rather than making negative assumptions.
4. Help each other win and take pride in each other's victories.
5. Speak positively about each other and about the organization at every opportunity.
6. Maintain a positive mental attitude no matter what the circumstances.
7. Act with initiative and courage as if all depends on you.
8. Do everything with enthusiasm. It's contagious.
9. Believe in what you are doing.
10. Whatever you want, give it away.

6. Did You Know?

A.) Forty percent of high schools allow student exemptions from required physical education courses. Conflict with other school activities, vocational training, and community service are among the valid reasons accepted, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

B.) Recess advocacy groups are popping up across the country, organized by parents and teachers. The National PTA and the Cartoon Network began a campaign this spring called Rescue Recess. The pressure to raise test scores and cover content is cutting into recess time throughout the country. Parents are beginning to fight back. They argue that free play is extremely important to children and their development. It is one time during the day when youngsters get to have some choice, some control over their school lives. It gives them an opportunity to engage in decision-making, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Getting air in the lungs, allowing the blood to flow, and getting the kinks out of muscles are other important reasons to get up and run around for a while during the day.

C.) A conservative estimate of the cost of replacing public school teachers who have dropped out of the profession nationally is $2.2 billion a year, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Why is teacher turnover so high? Lack of influence over school policy, too heavy a workload, lack of planning time, and student behavior were the reasons most often cited.

D.) A TRANSFORMATIONAL PARENTING INTENSIVE is scheduled to take place in Santa Barbara, California, on September 29, 30, and October 1. Chick Moorman and Thomas Haller will be the featured speakers during this extraordinary weekend.

Sneak preview:

Transform your parenting style, your family relationships, and your attitude toward the important and sacred role of parenting. Learn why children need soul models more than role models and the importance of holding children in a state of grace, even as you hold them accountable for their behaviors. Nourish a child's spirit as you guide them through the daily challenges of becoming who they are destined to be. An entertaining and practical keynote address that will leave you glad you are present and full of anticipation for the remainder of the conference.
