Once you get to our home pagee, scroll down to see Run For The Rivers and the Donation Button. You can also read our Press Release in the MEDIA section.

Mike Melton, of Sailfish Striders, our team of one, will be running ahead of his chase van which will be 'dressed' in Rivers Coalition colors with banners and flags and he and his crew will be sporting Run For The Rivers shirts at the finish line on Saturday afternoon.

Mike has been actively promoting Run For The Rivers on the radio and we did a photo shoot Thursday night for a Stuart News article. Mike will also be making some radio broadcasts on WPSL starting Thursday April 12th at the end of some of the race legs to keep us posted.

If anyone is interested in joining Mike on the other side, there will be a celebration of the Sunrise to Sunset Relay Race at the Edison/Ford Winter Estates finish line. Contact Jamie Burns at 772-225-6849 for more information.

PRESS RELEASE for immediate release

Running For The Rivers
Stuart - Somewhere in the wee hours between Wednesday and Thursday, April 11th and 12th, Mike Melton, V.P. of local running club Sailfish Striders, will be taking his first step in what will be his ultra-marathon run from Jensen Beach, Florida to Fort Myers. Mike is dedicating this three day race to Run For The Rivers in support of the Rivers Coalition and to focus awareness on their efforts and fundraising to stop the discharges from Lake Okeechobee to save the Saint Lucie River Estuary.

Much of the course will take Mike along the Okeechobee waterway, around Lake Okeechobee and then west sometimes paralleling the Caloosahatchee River and end in Fort Myers. I know the water looks really good now said Mike. We are in severe drought and the locks are closed but when the rains return, the discharges will start again and well be right back to being the dumping ground for excess water from Lake Okeechobee.

This wont be the first ultra-marathon for Mike. Hes been doing them since 2003 and he says that barring the unexpected, hes confident hell finish. He has a support crew that will follow him across the state in their Run For The Rivers van and his wife, Sandy, also an ultra marathon runner, will crew for the first few legs out to Okeechobee.

I know some people may think this just a crazy thing to do but I feel really good about being able to help focus attention on the efforts of the Rivers Coalition to stop the discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Melton says. The race course offers a near perfect opportunity to remind everyone that we are all in this together. The discharges ruin the estuary here on the east coast and they doing the same thing over on the west coast.

This first ever Sunrise to Sunset Relay Race, a 165 mile course starts at Indian Riverside Park in Jensen Beach on April 13, 2007 and ends in Fort Myers at the Thomas Edison and Henry Ford winter estates Saturday afternoon, April 14, 2007. Several teams are running this as a relay race, some of them from out of the state. Mike, however, is going the distance solo so to finish near the same time as all the other participants, he had to get organizers permission to leave 30 hours ahead of the teams that start early Friday.

To make a pledge for Mikes Run For The Rivers, supporters can visit www.RiversCoalition.org or call 772-225-6849.
