HERBAL FORMULA OF THE MONTH: ATTENTION FOCUS

NOURISHMENT FOR ADHD... ATTENTION-FOCUS FORMULA

As a society, we have little time to ourselves, and we live in environments that tend to be overstimulating. It has become too easy for us to lose our center (and our yin). The sympathetic nervous system (SNS, yang, or fight or flight response) is over-stimulated, and the parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS, yin, or relaxation response) is under-stimulated. Our ability to pay attention may become burned-out and deficient. The hyperactivity of the SNS (yang) depletes the effectiveness of the PSNS, making it harder to focus, calm down, and tone the relaxation response. Chamomile is a soothing, nerve-calming tonic that helps relieve stress and calm the SNS. Zizyphus is a safe, tonic sedative that calms the spirit and treats insomnia, and nervous restlessness as its active ingredients (jujubosides, betulin, and betulic acid) tone the PSNS. The Rehmannia Six formula: (rehmannia, cornus, dioscorea, moutan, poria, and alisma), combined with gotu kola leaf, (the Ayurvedic herb long considered as a rejuvenating mind relaxer,) helps concentration and short-term memory. This formula calms and helps the mind focus, promoting adult attention span.

Ingredients
Prepared rehmannia root, cornus fruit, dioscorea root, poria sclerotium (hoelen), moutan bark, alisma, zizyphus seed, hawthorn berry, gotu kola leaf, lemon balm leaf.

Antecedent
Based on Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia, Liu Wei Di Huang (1119 A.D.), Rehmannia Six Formula.

Acupuncture Helps with Fibromyalgia Symptoms

The June 2007 edition of the Mayo Clinic Proceedings reports on a study that found acupuncture helpful in treating the fatigue and anxiety commonly experienced by fibromyalgia patients.
In the double-blind study, Mayo Clinic doctors gave 25 fibromyalagia patients acupuncture, 25 "non-acupuncture points" acupuncture treatments. Patient received six treatments during the two to three weeks study. Their answers to the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire revealed the those who received acupuncture treatment reported less fatigue and anxiety one month after treatment than did the "non-acupuncture point" group.

Chinese Herbs and Breast Cancer

For many women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer, the use of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs- either alone or with chemotherapy - may help guard bone marrow and immune system, while improving overall quality of life. That's the conclusion of the Cochrane Systematic Review, a study of the use of Chinese medicine to determine safety and effectiveness in breast cancer patients.

The review looked at seven randomized studies involving 542 breast cancer patients. Researchers at the Chinese Cochrane Center in Chengdu, China, found that Chinese medicinal herb treatments showed some evidence of reducing side effects, and caused no harm to patients who were treated with them. However, the study's authors cautioned that the studies weren't ideally designed, and more research was needed before a clear role for traditional Chinese medicine in breast cancer treatment could be established.

BOOK OF THE MONTH: Why Some Like It Hot: Food, Genes, and Cultural Diversity

Nabhan, an ethnobiologist and nutritional ecologist, examines how our ethnicity determines our digestion. He explains why modern native Americans are prone to diabetes, and why Mediterranean diets generally work best for those whose forbears came from the Mediterranean. He urges us to learn about the foods our particular ethnic group used to stay healthy in the home country, and to apply that knowledge to the food choices we make.

Praise for Why Some Like It Hot
"Mixing hard science with personal anecdotes, Nabhan convincingly argues that health comes from a genetically appropriate diet inextricably entwined with a healthy land and culture." Publishers Weekly
