THERE ARE STILL TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR REGGAE RISING MUSIC FESTIVAL HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CA
From the Editor:

Remember a couple of years ago when REGGAE RISING (formerly called Reggae on the River) tickets sold out in March of each year?

Yeah, that was a bummer. The Reggae Festival Guide office got swarmed with calls from sad people who hadn't got their tickets in time asking for our help.

Now, because of their new venue, (just next door to where they used to be, and still right on the river) there is more room, which means more tickets.

You are in luck: there are still some tickets available to this weekend's premier reggae festival.

So if you just found out that your mom will watch your dog, or your girlfriend gets the weekend off from work, or you thought you couldn't afford it because gas is so high but you are just itching for an irie weekend... no worries, there are still some tickets left.

Simply call 707-923-4599 or visit www.reggaerising.com
or purchase them at the gate on the day of the show.

I won't even mention the line-up here because you already know who will be there...everybody except you, unless you act fast.

I just found out I could go yesterday and am packing my car as we speak so that is why this newsletter is going out a day early.

See you on the river - and don't forget your sunblock, hat, comfy shoes and good vibes.

One Love,
Kaati

Reggae Dance Party is back by popular demand! Susanne Moss is proud to present this third party inna Jamaica stylee featuring Ras Negus on the mike backed by DJ Shanghi.

Jamaica born Ras Negus, who now resides in Beacon with his wife and two children,  brings from Jamaica his extensive experience as performance and recording artist. In the mid 80’s Ras Negus traveled all of Jamaica with Stereo One Sound, one of Jamaica’s leading Sound Systems playing the latest and greatest Reggae sounds. In Jamaica, a sound systems carries the dancehall party direct to the people – particularly to remote localities where few have access to the big city. Huge speakers are stacked beside the DJ’s table and everyone, young and old, comes to listen and dance the whole night through. Ras Negus sang at such events and developed a huge following.

In the mid 90’s, Ras Negus recorded his first solo track on a CD entitled “Break Down Barriers” at King Jammy’s well loved recording studio in Kingston. Moving back and forth between Beacon and Kingston afforded Ras Negus the opportunity to record at Junior Reid’s One Blood Studio in Kingston Jamaica as well as Dereck Barrnet’s studio in NY. He has recorded 3 CD’s in all and is working on his 4th. Ras Negus has performed at the Chance in Poughkeepsie and in Woodstock with his backing band, Vital Dub. His music is aired internationally in Europe and Canada. He has produced a music video, “Lovin’ Feelin.’

Ras Negus is a Rastaman hailing from the Bobo Ashanti group inspired by their prophet Holy Emmanuel I. Most reggae music is both spiritually and lyrically rooted in the Rastafarian belief system. Ras Negus pays special homage towards Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, Empress Menon (Haile Selassie’s Queen) and Marcus Garvey I (founder of The Black Star Liner and “Back to Africa” movement). Ras Negus aspires to “Take you to a higher level of consciousness through righteousness.”

We are delighted to bring this authentic Style of Reggae performance to Beacon. DJ Shanghi of Isis International Sounds, a born and bred Hudson Valley resident, has been spinning at many local parties and events. At our dance party, he will play new and favorite Reggae tunes and make timely announcements over the mike. He will back Ras Negus’ performance by playing recorded rhythm tracks over which Ras Negus will sing original and popular songs. This is consistent with a traditional Jamaican style of Reggae music where an artist overdubs his musical message onto any one of a vast number of popular recorded rhythms.

In addition we will be screening three documentary videos; Ras Cuba: Interviews with Cuban Rastafarians by Susanne Moss, Discovering Rastafari! as seen at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in DC and Ras Negus’ music video Lovin’ Feelin”. Yvone’s delicious Jamaican/Ital food and drink will be available.

CHERINE ANDERSON AND SLY & ROBBIE "GIVE IT TO" MADONNA
Legendary producers Sly & Robbie have churned out another "blazin" tune. This time the artist requesting the track was none other than arguably the world's largest pop icon, Madonna. Madonna was a fan of Sly & Robbie and Cherine Anderson's amazing remix of the Britney Spears' song "Piece of Me", and wanted the magic of the trio on her new single, "Give It 2 Me" (the second single off her new album Hard Candy).

The hands-on Madonna was so impressed by the work of the Riddim Twins and Cherine that she chose several of their mixes to be released. Now available via iTunes are two mixes, "Sly & Robbie Ragga Mix" and "Sly & Robbie Bongo Mix".

Cherine was truly thrilled to have the opportunity to work on a project with the queen of re-invention. "I grew up listening to Madonna and in college her songs were huge on the dance floor. It's always great fun working with Sly & Robbie. It's a huge honor to be featured on this remix."

Crucial : : Shadow Stampede
Crucial's debut album, Shadow Stampede, encompasses a full range of musical genres while being rooted in the core of Reggae.  With the band's influences ranging from all over the musical spectrum this album is destined to be an essential, one of a kind, addition to any music collection.  With intense dance grooves, like the explosive intro track, Speak The Truth, that contain intense synthesizer leads as well as mesmerizing sweeping guitar hooks, to the epic title track Shadow Stampede, in which the band creates a thick, dark, and dreamy musical landscape, this album takes on many strong musical personalities.  As Crucial continues to evolve musically, this album captures a great period during this band's first four years together.

Congo Natty Dread : : The Time Is Right
Congo Natty Dread, as one listener rightly described it: "is a tough, tough
tune". It  moves you. It hooks you right from the first note. Very deep in
feeling, emotion and meditation. It is a testament of the trials and tribulations righteousness has had  to endure to overcome evil in high and low places. Moreover, it illuminates the stumbling blocks that socio-political Reggae and it's ambassadors has had to overcome, and still has to overcome, in these times when fiction is being mascaraded as reality, and lies parading as truth.
Liberty, Equality, Justice for All and loving humanity, are some of the sentiments and ideals expressed and envisioned in Congo Natty Dread.
Congo Natty Dread:
Dem could burst my head, I will never get Mad
Dem could dig out my eyes, is the farther I'll see
If they cut my hands, I'll be holding on stronger
If they castrate me, I will still spread the seeds
These lyrics reinforces the commitment to stay on the righteous path, no
matter what the cost, and to continue the works of the pioneers/freedom
fighters, in saying no to war, hunger, greed, racism, environmental
degradation, religion and all the other socially constructed plagues that
are on the verge of destroying our planet.
One People, One World.
