CHRIS JAMES AND PATRICK RYNN : : STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT

Blues fans know vocalist and lead guitarist Chris James and Patrick Rynn as the leaders of their own band, The Blue Four, as well as for their stellar work with a dazzling array of blues legends. Now they're stepping out on their own in "Stop And Think About It", their new release on the Earwig Music label.

Over the last 18 years, the duo has honer their on-stage interplay to ESP-like levels. They're proud traditionalists who delight in digging deep into a postwar Chicago vein, yet this debut album also boasts a plethora of satisfying originals. Their rollicking energy level instantly grabs young audiences who may not even be familiar with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf.

Loving revivals of vintage numbers on this disc, such as Elmore James' crashing "Hawaaiian Boogie" and Bo Diddley's "Confessin' The Blues" mesh seamlessly with their invigorating fresh material such as "You're Gone" and "Mister Coffee."

Special guests on this album include Sam Lay, David Maxwell, Bob Corritore and several more!

BIG DADDY 'O' : : WHAT YOU GOTTA GO THROUGH
Big Daddy 'O' is one of those rare blues finds. For more than thirty years he has been playing in roadhouses and bars in the delta area near the Louisiana/Mississippi border. Rabadash Records "discovered" Big Daddy 'O' playing at small bar in Amite, Louisiana. His approach to performing songs makes each song sound like his own, and everyone who has the pleasure of hearing him loves his big beautiful voice and good-natured presentation. At 6'6", he has a strong presence on stage that no one forgets. He performs as a solo act as well as with his band, "The Big Daddy 'O' Revue."

Since signing with Rabadash Records, Big Daddy 'O' is becoming all the buzz --being recognized as "Best Emerging Blues Artist (2002)" by Offbeat Magazine, and being asked to play the  New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival every year since.. In addition, his debut CD, "That's How Strong My Love Is", was named one of the best CD's of the year by the Times Picayune, The Gambit and Offbeat Magazine. He has recently sold out shows in Florida, Arkansas and Louisiana and played at the House Of Blues, The Maple Leaf, Tipitina's and the Howlin Wolf in New Orleans. Big Daddy 'O' has also had the privilege of sharing the stage with Lonnie Mac, Johnny Winters, Black Oak Arkansas, Dr. Hook, Mark Chestnut and Marcia Ball. Born to the blues, Owen "Big Daddy 'O'" Tufts never fails to please!

LLUIS COLOMA : : BOOGIE PORTRAITS

Born in Barcelona (1973), Lluís  Coloma is one of the most demanded pianists in the spanish Blues scene.

Influenced from early age by records of Jerry Lee Lewis, Roosevelt Sykes and Alan Price, Lluís little by little moves away from the classical piano studies to dedicate himself, in a self-taught way, exclusively to Rock & Roll. He shows very soon a surprising ability for Blues and Boogie Woogie.

Considered a specialist and awarded with the prizes “Best catalan musician 2003” and “Artista BluesCat 2006”, Lluís has given conferences and master classes on the history of Blues and Boogie Woogie piano, being one of the few pianists in Spain able to recreate the primitive styles of this genre. Lluís is often invited at European Blues & Boogie Woogie piano festivals where he stands out for his originality and powerful performances.

In his new CD," Boogie Portraits"(Swing Alley 2008), Lluis records duets with Blues & Boogie Woogie piano greats

A piano duets Cd with European and American  Blues & Boogie Woogie piano players.

Lluís plays duets with Carl Sonny Leyland  Bob Seeley,  Mark "Mr B" Braun, Barrelhouse Chuck, Frank Muschalle and others.

NATIONAL WOMEN IN BLUES FESTIVAL

It's almost time for the 3rd National Women in Blues Festival in Wilmington North Carolina this September 26th and 27th, 2008. Leveling the playing field for all women this years festival is bringing in another great line up with artist's from coast to coast including headliners like Gaye Abegdebola on Friday and Candye Kane on Saturday. Both ladies are well known to the blues world as powerful performers.
Many in Wilmington are familiar with Gaye from her multiple appearances with Saffire– the Uppity Blues Women. She has toured nationally and internationally, and has won numerous awards including the prestigious Blues Music Award.  As of Summer 2008, Adegbalola has 12 CDs in national distribution, including 3 on her own label, Hot Toddy Music. This years festival is in for a double treat as Gaye will be bringing her History of Women in Blues from the 1920s to today. She shares video and/or audio clips from Bessie Smith to Billie Holiday, from Rosetta Tharpe to Big Mama Thornton, from Etta Baker to Etta James and many others. She illuminates how the history of working class black women is documented in blues lyrics and after the screening and short intermission she will return to the stage with her musicians to do a live show.

Candye Kane is no stranger to the blues world and brings a dynamic to the stage seldom seen in this region. Candye Kane may still be a well-kept mainstream secret but in most underground circles, her diva status is legendary. She has been making music professionally for over two decades and toured worldwide since 1992, performing for amazingly diverse audiences. She played at the French Embassy in Rome for the President of Italy, headlined the Rhythm Riot, a rockabilly and R&B festival in the UK, and belted it out alongside Ray Charles at the Cognac Blues Festival. She slayed em' at the Cannes Film Festival, kept them enthralled at New York Gay Pride and most recently, helped organize a thirteen city tour of the Netherlands for special needs kids.

Also on this years festival line up we see the return of NY solo blues woman Sarah Lemiuex who’s smoky, silky voice, and unique brand of "storytelling" blues and jazz are getting people hooked all over the world, from Quebecois radio shows to Australian podcasts and everywhere in between. Also returning is Greensboro blues artist Patty Benson who Alan Shuttro of Blues Wax said "Patty Benson doesn't just sing the blues-she whispers, cries and even belts out the blues. Her vocals ring with confidence and emotion. She's sultry and bold as she spills out her lyrics on each and every song." New to this years stage is Peggy Ratusz and Big Road who recently played the semi-finals of the 2008 International Blues Challenge representing NC's own Piedmont Blues Preservation Society's after winning their last Blues Challenge. As she does each year, our festival will open with the Regions Grandmother of Blues, Mrs Rose Lucas backed by her husband Charlie Lucas. Both are well known to area music lovers and the blues community This year will also include a blues jam on Saturday afternoon that will be hosted by Michele and the Midnight Blues who represented the Cape Fear Blues Society in the 2006 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.. Expect a few surprise at the jam and some special guest performers too! Check the web site often for up dates and additions!

This years festival takes place in two locations showcasing the areas diversity. Friday night will take place at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater and Saturday night will be at one of the areas newest clubs The Cellar next to the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington, The Saturday afternnon jam will also take place at the Cellar. Tickets on sale through the web site but the Saturday Jam in the afternoon is FREE and open to the public. Regular tickets are $20 per night ($25 at the gate/door) or $40 for a weekend pass. Those who want in on the reserved seating at both venues can become individual sponsors for $100 for the weekend (this includes 2 weekend passes with reserved seating both nights and a perk bag of goodies) Both locations serve food and drink and we will have some additional vendors on site.

Join us for another addition of the National Women in Blues Festival and support great women artists and the one true musical genre that was born in the USA of the African American experience. Having moved a little earlier in the Fall season we expect great weather, so be prepared to feel the warm breeze on your skin and Magnolia in the air at WiB 3.

FROM MISSISSIPPI TO RUSSELL CITY

(Pictured: Terry"Big T"Williams,Zollie Polk,Fillmore Slim)

Hayward-Russell City Blues Festival - July 12 & 13  2008.Hayward, CA-

This was a historical event that brought together young and elder musicians from the Delta to the High Country of the State of Mississippi and also showcased many talented Bay Area musicians. The line-up this year included Johnny Rawls, Zac Harmon, Homemade Jamz, Terry “Big T” Williams, Vasti Jackson,  Johnny Brown, John Primer, Billy “Big Daddy” Cade, Howl n Madd Perry, Wingnut Adams, Zollie Polk,  and many more ( for complete line-up and for current and historical information on the East Bay blues scene, visit www.bayareabluessociety.net). Most of the Mississippi musicians came without their bands, but you would have never known. They were backed by an ever-changing array of Oakland and East Bay musicians variously known throughout the weekend as the Caravan of All Stars and the Hayward-Russell City Memorial Band.  These were incredible blends of musical traditions and talents, and every act came across as a tight band. Some of the back-up musicians played for over three hours straight -- and seemed to enjoy every minute.

What a “Blues Deal”! Two days full of great music that starts at 11:00AM and goes to 8:30PM. Once the festival stops on Saturday the music moves to the Bistro in Downtown Hayward for an “All Star” Jam. My husband, Tom, and I truly enjoyed Teddy “Blues Master” Watson at the Jam. He definitely knows how to work the crowd and he’s quite the entertainer. The Hampton Inn in Hayward was the Hotel Festival Sponsor and offered great rates that included free festivals tickets with the rooms. Mark your calendar for next year since this festival is a must for blues lovers.

Thanks to Paula and Ronnie Stewart for bringing this festival together and bringing us talent we rarely see on the West Coast. Paula is the “machine behind the scene” and takes care of all the details. Ronnie is not only a musical talent, but he’s also a mover, shaker and a motivator. When it comes to thanks we can’t forget the City of Hayward, which joins the Bay Area Blues Society in hosting the event, and all the many sponsors who make the show possible each year.

BLIND PIG SIGNS COMMANDER CODY

Roots music label Blind Pig Records and country-roots icon Commander Cody both originated in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Now the two are teaming up to release Cody’s first studio album since 1993, tentatively entitled Drunks Dopers and Everyday Losers.

George Frayne, aka the Ol’ Commander, said, "Looking to getting back in the studio after almost 15 years, Commander Cody has beamed down from the ozone just to partner up with old friends from Blind Pig."

Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen was formed in Ann Arbor in 1967 (where they played on the tiny basement stage of the Blind Pig Café, among other places) and moved the following year (along with Asleep At The Wheel) to Berkeley, where they immediately immersed themselves in the vibrant Bay Area rock scene. They were one of the first country rock bands to incorporate Western Swing and hardcore barroom country into their music. The group was signed to Paramount in 1971 and released four albums for the label, producing several hit singles along the way, including "Lost In The Ozone" and "Hot Rod Lincoln." They went on to record albums for Warner Brothers and Arista before disbanding in 1976. Frayne continued to perform simply under his stage name or as the Commander Cody Band.

Blind Pig Records, which grew out of the aforementioned Blind Pig Café, released Cody’s Lets’ Rock! album in 1986, which the New York Times called "one of the strongest rockabilly-based albums in some time." Cody continues to tour frequently. Reviewing a 2007 show, Blueswax called it "another smoking Rockabilly, Country, Boogie-Woogie set from Commander Cody, with a great band, a fistful of cleverly evil songs, and a whole lot of boogie soul."

Recording sessions for the new album are scheduled to begin in late August at the LRS Recording Studio near Woodstock, NY. The producer, Aaron (Professor Louie) Hurwitz, plans to utilize the members of the Commander’s current road band, which have been with him for almost twelve years, along with veteran studio musicians from the Woodstock area.
