REGGAE TRIBUTES TO MICHAEL JACKSON ON YOUTUBE
art from: www.helenakadlcikova.com//africa_in_me.jpg
On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, passed away suddenly.  I was already saddened by the earlier news of Farrah Fawcett's death, and Michael Jackson's death was just a complete shock.  Although I am obviously a reggae music lover, MJ's music had an impact on my life and love for music in much the same way that he affected millions of people around the world.  I first saw the Thriller video at the age of five, on a trip to New York.  My older cousin showed me the video and he was my best friend for life because of that!  I was attempting to pass on that same thrill to my sons only a few weeks before, when I showed them the Thriller video from the 25th anniversary CD/DVD release.  We also watched the Motown performance of Billie Jean in which he performed the moonwalk live for the first time and they've been moonwalking all over the house ever since.

Tragically, like many figures in pop culture, he was not without his scandals.  Money problems, lawsuits, child molestation allegations, mysterious illnesses, plastic surgeries gone awry - MJ just couldn't seem to outrun his shadows no matter how hard he tried.  In the weeks leading up to his untimely death, he was planning a comeback "This is It" tour, and had already sold out fifty shows in London alone, testament to his staying power despite his trials.  Regardless of the ever-present controversies, Michael Jackson was loved arond the globe.  The one positive note that seems to come from his death is that finally, for once, he is being remembered for his music and not for his problems.

So today, I'm posting a reggae music tribute to Michael Jackson.  One of the more interesting sides of reggae music is the tendency of its artists to cover songs from other genres. Everything from the Beatles to Patti Labelle, reggae music has covered it.  So, here are a few videos of various reggae artists covering some of Michael Jackson's hits.  Enjoy.

ZIGGY MARLEY SHARES FAMILY TIME
SCROLL DOWN AND LISTEN TO SONG IN OUR 'New CD's In The Mix' SECTION!

Tuff Gong Worldwide released Ziggy Marley's third solo album, Family Time, on May 5. Marley produced the album with legendary producer Don Was. The album features a variety of family and friends including Rita Marley, Cedella Marley, Judah Marley (his daughter), Paul Simon, Jack Johnson, Willie Nelson, Toots Hibberts, Elizabeth Mitchell, Laurie Berkner, Paula Fuga and two stories narrated by Jamie Lee Curtis.

"Growing up music was an important part of my childhood," Marley says. "I see it being just as important in my children and all children's growth and development. Music helps children to grow with open minds and open hearts and this is my message. This record represents my daily family life and is inspired by my three-year-old daughter Judah and baby Gideon. It was a joy to make and opened up new avenues in my creativity. Family Time is for all families and especially the world family."

Ziggy has contributed to a variety of children's programming including Nick Jr.'s "Dora the Explorer," the PBS children's show "Arthur," and Shark Tale, in which he delved into acting, playing the character of Bernie the Jamaican jellyfish as well as re-recording his father's "Three Little Birds" with Sean Paul and his brother Stephen Marley for the soundtrack. In addition to his skills as a singer, songwriter and producer, Marley founded U.R.G.E. (Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment), a non-profit organization that benefits a wide range of charitable children's causes in Jamaica, and other developing nations. More recently he has lent his support to the Fashion Against Aids, Little Kids Rock and Youth AIDS campaign. Proceeds from the sale of this album will benefit Chepstowe Basic School in Port Antonio, JA.

The Tuff Gong label, was founded in 1965 by Bob Marley, with the vision of producing, distributing and promoting his music free from the constraints of corporate label politics. In a time decades before artist-owned record labels were commonplace, the legendary Bob Marley's vision was characteristically well ahead of its time. Now, nearly a half-century later, his dream is being realized.

$12 advance, $15 door

Good Vibez & Moe’s Alley welcome the hottest reggae band outta Jamaica today… ROOTZ UNDERGROUND to Moe’s Alley July 30.
ROOTZ UNDERGROUND BIO:   http://www.rootzunderground.com
The revolution that is Rootz Underground began in 2000 when the band members, whose lives had crossed paths sometime or another from childhood, linked their individual musical talents in search of forming one solid unit. The Rootz Underground revolution emerged on the scene in a blaze of high-energy performances and conscious lyrics.

Individually, each had embarked on a road of truth, seeking musical and spiritual harmony, and when their paths inevitably forged to form Rootz, they got together to offer up a striking and refreshing mix of conscious lyrics, and a harmonic alternative reggae sound that marries their intellectual, spiritual and creative energies.  This marriage has birthed music that is inspiring, energizing and real, progressive, unique, and with edge their reggae has a modern hip hop feel infused with slivers of jazz, rock and revolutionary dub.  Collectively their union affirms an aim of bringing a JAH-inspired message to the masses. It pulses with message, from social to love revolution, from the poignant ‘Rain’ to the guttural and revolutionary ‘How much Longer’, and the witty ‘In the Jungle’.

Though Rootz Underground has only just begun digging their 'rootz' in the industry, the band's old soul has already effortlessly enlisted a core of followers - some who already saw the world through like eyes and are glad to hear such sounds of social commentary and life/love lessons on stage; others, simply just converts. Whatever it may be, Rootz Underground is one of few of Jamaica's younger bands whose shows are almost always filled to capacity, whose fans will even cross the island to take in the positive vibrations.

Many more firsts smile at Rootz Underground from the horizon as their talent shines through and is increasingly recognized in the music business in Jamaica and throughout the world. And the revolution continues………

Advance tickets available at Moe’s Alley & online at http://www.moesalley.com

UPPSALA REGGAE FEST AND POSITIVITY PROJECT:SPREAD THE LOVE! 8/6/09
Uppsala Reggae Festival is northern Europe’s biggest reggae festival and has been held annually since 2001. Every year the festival presents some of the world’s leading reggae artists and legends – Swedish as well as foreign. The festival attracts around 20 000 visitors over three days and is situated along the side of the Fyris river on the outskirts of central Uppsala. The festival’s mission is to make reggae music more accessible to more people and to provide a meeting place for people who want to experience love and togetherness – Oneness. The whole operation is founded on a deep understanding of reggae music and reggae culture.

The Uppsala Reggae Festival challenges reggae festivals and media of the world to accept the "Life is Great challenge" – a positivity-project that is making people express the greatness in life. Life is great! In these times of global economic recession, hope and joy is needed. Yared Tekeste, the founder of Uppsala Reggae Festival in Sweden, thinks this world needs more reggae spirit: “There are so many wonderful things in the world, but we need to help each other understand and appreciate them. Therefore Uppsala Reggae Festival encourages all reggae media and festivals to challenge their audience to share the joy and optimism in a creative and generous manner”.

As an example Yared mentions the positivity-project, Life is Great. Through a blog people are contributing with art, photos, poetry, video, music and share their ideas on Life is Great http://www.lifeisgreat09.blogspot.com. The best material will then be published in magazines and exposed at Uppsala Reggae Festival 2009, which has Life is Great as a festival theme this year.

”The Life is Great concept, including the logo, may be used by all reggae lovers who accepts the challenge”, says Yared Tekeste.

Uppsala Reggae Festival, august 6-8, 2009 .

“Reggae is advancing in Scandinavia and that is not only due to the music, but also because of the culture and lifestyle. People are looking for new ways to meet, and now more than ever the world needs us to spread the positivity”, says Yared Tekeste.

GIVE THANKS!
For the expanding grandeur of Creation,
worlds known and unknown,
galaxies beyond galaxies,
filling us with awe and challenging our imaginations:

We give thanks this day.

For this fragile planet earth,
its times and tides, its sunsets and seasons:

We give thanks this day.

For the joy of human life,
its wonders and surprises, its hopes and achievements:

We give thanks this day.

For our human community,
our common past and future hope,
our oneness transcending all separation,
our capacity to work for peace and justice in the midst of hostility and oppression:

We give thanks this day.

For high hopes and noble causes, for faith without fanaticism,
for understanding of views not shared:

We give thanks this day.

For all who have labored and suffered for a fairer world,
who have lived so that others might live in dignity and freedom:

We give thanks this day.

For human liberty and sacred rites;
for opportunities to change and grow, to affirm and choose:

We give thanks this day.

We pray that we may live not by our fears but by our hopes,
not by our words but by our deeds.
we give thanks this day
