Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake

Race Recaps

Lake Junaluska Duathlon (April 17)
The Western North Carolina multi sport season opened under blue skies and warm temperatures at the Lake Junaluska Duathlon.  Jay Curwen of Asheville and Karen Wallace of Marrieta, Georgia took the individual honors.

French Broad Challenge Triathlon (May 29)
Amidst a bustling outdoor festival with 5,000 people, fifty-eight athletes participated in the inaugural race at the Mountain Sports Festival.  This unique triathlon – run, paddle, bike, run – attracted athletes from across the country and featured the closest races seen at an area race in years.  Jay Curwen won his second GHE race of the season over former Asheville resident and pro triathlete Kevin Lisska.  On the women’s side, Nicole Crane captured her first individual title over another Asheville resident, Karen Masson.

Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake (June 12)
A record number of athletes turned out for the third Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake and were greeted with warmer than usual temperatures, both in the water and on the roads.  In a reversal from the FBC Triathlon two weeks earlier, Kevin Lisska beat out Jay Curwen for the individual title.  Karen Masson followed her equally impressive performance at the FBC to take the women’s crown.

Event Spotlight 2 - Lake Logan Multi Sport Festival

Triathletes from across the country will once again flock to the Lake Logan Episcopal Center in Canton August 7-8 for a weekend of racing at one of America’s finest multi-sport venues.

The weekend kicks off with the Lake Logan International Triathlon, which features a 1,500 meter swim, 24 mile bike ride and 10K run.   The Todd Stien Foundation provides $1,000 in cash prizes: $100 to the male and female overall and masters winners and $100 to the fastest swim split, bike split and run split, male and female.

On Sunday, the Center welcomes the Lake Logan Sprint Triathlon Presented by Haywood Health & Fitness Center and the Lake Logan Aquathlon.  The sprint race will have a 500 meter swim, 12 mile bike ride and 5K run.  The aquathlon, which will also be the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, will be a 1,500 meter swim followed by a 5K run.

In a summer of very uncomfortable heat and humidity, Lake Logan is an oasis featuring morning air temperatures in the low 60’s and water temperatures in the low 70’s, making it a rare wetsuit-legal swim race.  If you are tired of the heat and would like to race a mountain course that doesn’t have leg numbing climbs on either the bike or run course, Lake Logan is the place to be in early August.

Details on all three Lake Logan races can be found at www.gloryhoundevents.com.

Event Spotlight 3 - Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon & 5K

An entry into the Asheville Citizen-Times Half Marathon will be the hottest ticket in town in September.  With still two months until the race, the race is over 60% full.  The race, which is getting attention from the across the country, has a capacity of 1,500 runners and has sold out each of the past two years.  Its sister 5K does not have a race cap and is expected to draw another 1,000 runners to downtown Asheville.

This race continues to improve on itself each year.  New for 2010:
  • An expanded “green race” program that includes 100% on-line registration, recycled glass finisher and award medals, a virtual goody bag to replace the traditional plastic ones, and a carbon offset program called Asheville Offset.
  • The addition of a beer tent to race alley featuring the local beers of Highland Brewery.  Each half marathon and 5K participant, 21 years and older, will receive coupons for two beers as part of their race packet
  • Disposable chip timing.  No more standing in line to receive your timing chip or waiting at the finish line for someone to remove your chip.  Your chip will be attached to your race bib and is yours to keep after the race.
  • Expanded packet pick-up hours.  We will host a Locals Night from 4-8 pm on the Thursday before the race where our local runners can avoid the Friday crowds.  The Friday session has also been expanded from 12 noon to 7 pm.  There will no longer be packet pick up or late registration on race day.
Go to www.citizen-times.com/race for complete race information including course maps, video tours of the course, and link to registration.
