 Summertime Blues

Last week I said it felt like hang time now this week I feel like summer
is ending. I am just about to the end
of my last week of out of town
summer oriented activities.
Looking back at my pictures, I saw this one and it made me feel like I was saying goodbye to summer... putting it behind me so to speak.  Anybody else feeling the pinch this week? That feeling of where did summer go as we get toward the end of July and August that I mentioned last week feels this week like it is looming in my rearview mirror!  Suppose I need to take my own advice and look ahead to the many events still ahead as summer winds down.  For example we are getting closer to the fall Ozark Blues Society Blues Challenge event. The board has begun to get requests for information and details are getting close to completion. If you are a musician interested in competing or know someone who is, please remember to keep an eye on our website and Facebook page as well as this newsletter for updates.
This week some local blues friends have shared information for articles and I have had one offer to help with interviewing local bands but still...If I am missing YOUR information...or that of your favorite band of venue, you need to email me! I want this newsletter to offer you the information you, the reader, finds helpful. Also please send any ideas or comments to me anytime at:

Roy Book Binder
visits
Fayetteville Public Library

From his website we read, "Musically, Roy Book Binder is equally
difficult to fence in or categorize.
His eclectic repertoire includes
blues, country tunes, bluegrass,
folk, and popular songs that originated on Tin Pan Alley.
Come see this special artist in concert
at the Fayetteville Public Library
Friday, August 5
Doors at 6:30; music begins at 7:30.
Admission is $15 at the door.
Check out Fayetteville Public Library Website for more information.

"Pickin' Post" radio show host Mike Shirkey who will be hosting shared this about Roy Book Binder:
"As a young blues player starting out, Roy was a driver for Rev. Gary Davis. They became great friends and Roy learned much from him. Legendary blues piano man, Pinky Anderson, also helped a young Bookbinder play the blues." Mike also noted, "in addition to his visit to Fayetteville, Roy is playing at the Ozark Folk Center on Saturday, Aug 6 for their acoustic blues weekend."

James Hippa of "The Hip Blurb" says, "Roy has the goods: the original, the bare-knuckle, the low-down . . . blues.
Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis and Pink Anderson? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna & Bonnie Raitt ?  Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.”  He’s also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen and others. When he brings his  'Tour Bus'  to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains, feeding us music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for us all. We’re privileged to have Roy here to preserve–and extend—the tradition of great American blues music."

January. They will be joined by local favorites Eric Mathews, Mike Westbrook, and Warren Robertson on drums.
Terry Buckalew, local blues expert,
will be displaying some memorabilia
from his many years of association with blues music. His knowledge and experience gained from several years with KFFA Radio, home of the King Biscuit Blues program, is a great way to learn more about the genre. Headlining the show will be Junior Markham and the Caretakers from Tulsa, OK.
Junior Markham and his band are legends in the Tulsa music scene. He has performed with many legends such as Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, and Eric Clapton among others. He and his band have been described as “Caretakers of the Tulsa Sound”. The Oklahoma Jazz hall of Fame shares "James 'Junior' Markham grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and developed an interest in music from listening to blues radio, hearing records of Roy Orbison, and seeing Elvis Presley perform live at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Pavilion in 1956.  Markham landed his first record deal in Los Angeles with Capital Records.  Billy Lee Riley, who helped him get the contract, later produced and played on Markham’s album Chuck Meets Bo.  In Los Angeles, Markham performed with Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Carl Radle, and Ace Moreland.
Markham left Tulsa in the early ‘60s for Los Angeles, but returned in 1969.  In 1972 he opened the Paradise Club, a nightclub that hosted blues, jazz, and country music. The Paradise Club hosted the talents of Jimmie Vaughan’s Fabulous Thunderbirds, Mose Allison, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Musslewhite, Hubert Sumlin, Koko Taylor, Barney Kessel, Joe South, Albert Collins, and Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown.   When away from the Paradise Club, Markham recorded with Jimmy Reed, Albert King, Buddy Holly’s Crickets, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Jerry Lee
Lewis, A.C. Reed, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Rolling Stones Pianist Bobby Keyes.
In 1987, Markham left Tulsa for Nashville, where he co-organized the 'TNT (Tulsa-Nashville-Transplant) Blowout,' a music event for Oklahoma musicians.  In Nashville, he worked with Bob Greenlee of King Snake Records.
Markham returned to Tulsa in January 1998.  Rusty Miller said of Markham, 'He is an institution. I have learned a lot from him; his approach to blues is relaxed. He has the right attitude and it is contagious. He is a spark and pulls the best out of anyone who plays with him.'”

You have to open your mind. I like the ability to express myself in a deep way. It's the closest music to our humanity - it's like a folk music that rises up out of a culture.

This Week's Quote

"You don't have to play a whole lot of guitar to be a good blues player. Some people plays too much guitar. Stack it on top of each other the way it don't - you're working too fast. Blues not supposed to be played fast. Blues supposed to be played slow. You could kill a man with just one chord."
