BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO : : LAY YOUR BURDEN DOWN
Lay Your Burden Down marks a multiple milestone for Buckwheat Zydeco, the great band led by accordionist Stanley “Buckwheat” Dural, Jr. Deeply rooted in Dural’s heritage—the dance music of South Louisiana’s black, French-speaking Creoles—Lay Your Burden Down also shines as Buckwheat Zydeco’s most ambitious, eclectic and contemporary recording to date. This inspired blend of homage and innovation befits a Louisiana legend who brims with youthful energy as he celebrates his band’s 30th anniversary.

Dural is bursting with ideas, and, with three decades on the road, he has been through plenty. So, of late, has his beloved Louisiana. Lay Your Burden Down reflects that long journey with tales of travail and resilient optimism alike. Consider his powerful rendition of “When The Levee Breaks,” by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy, which described the Mississippi River flood of 1927. When Led Zeppelin popularized this song decades later, who imagined that it might again have topical relevance? Then came hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav and Ike, battering the Gulf Coast, including Dural’s hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. With special guest (and former Chenier band mate) Sonny Landreth on guitar—and Dural on Hammond B3 organ—the band delves into the breached levee’s ominous, roiling depths. Then Dural picks up his accordion and leaps into an upbeat two-step that celebrates Louisiana’s life-affirming, jazz-funeral philosophy of renewal.

All the members of Buckwheat Zydeco are in top form here, as is the masterful producer and baritone saxophonist Steve Berlin, who also produced the band’s Five Card Stud back in 1994. Lay Your Burden Down pulses with music that tells a story, music that has been through something. Since it’s zydeco, this fine new album will naturally get feet to moving. But Lay Your Burden Down speaks with equal eloquence to the head, and the heart.

ROY ROGERS : : SPLIT DECISION
This release -- Roy's first studio recording with his band, The Delta Rhythm Kings, in seven years -- marks his reunion with Blind Pig, the label that issued Rogers' highly regarded early recordings in the late 1980's. Since then he's gone on to worldwide acclaim as one of the best slide guitar players around, garnered multiple Grammy nominations for his work as a producer for John Lee Hooker and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and received numerous accolades for songwriting and his work on movie soundtracks and television.
"I really wanted Split Decision to have an edge to it soundwise," says Rogers. "My influences are from all over the map - all kinds of roots music, to jazz, and even other music from around the world. You can certainly hear many of those influences on the recording. I love combining different elements on a recording, but ultimately it is about 'the feel' of a total record which represents that moment in time captured. I hope that shines through in a positive way for people. Thanks for listening."

FREEDOM CREEK FESTIVAL
Freedom Creek Festival
Friday May 29 and Saturday May 30
791 Old Memphis Road, Aliceville, Alabama 35442
Admission (suggested donation): Friday $10 / Saturday $12

“. . . To get there, you pull in off the paved road, drive past the two sagging white trailers, slip through the break in the trees, cross the freshly mowed field and park near the stand of maple, oak and pine . . .”

The Freedom Creek Blues Festival has been bringing great blues artists to the heart of the Alabama black belt for over ten years and this year is no exception. Very sadly, the founder and inspiration of this festival, outstanding bluesman Willie King, passed away earlier this year . . . but the festival lives on!

As in previous year, the festival is presented by the Rural Members Association, a non-profit organization also founded by Willie King, dedicated to preserving and promoting local rural arts and culture. The festival will take place in the same deep in the woods location it has occupied for the last twelve years and will feature a great lineup of international and regional performers, along with free camping, local food and a warm welcome for all.

The festival kicks off on Friday afternoon around 4pm with gospel singing from Julius Conner and then its blues all the way, headlining Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm along with Taylor Moore, Little Willie Farmer, Caleb Childs and the Old Memphis Kings, Willie Lee Halbert, Vanessia Young and the Pure Blues Express and many more.

Saturday starts with gospel singing from the Reverend Bob Little at 11am followed by young performers from the Alabama Blues Project’s blues camp program, the Alabama blues women revue featuring Caroline Shines, Sweet Claudette, Shar Baby and Debbie Bond, plus “Birmingham” George Conner, Pat Moss, Clarence Davis and a host of other artists. The day features the superlative Kenny Neal, and great Alabama harmonica master Jerry “Boogie” McCain, and will end jamming out to the sound of the Liberators.

Thanks to generous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Black Belt Community Foundation and Musicmaker Foundation, admission can be kept very low - a suggested donation of $10 on Friday and $12 on Saturday.

Woodstock was not just an event, a happening or a concert with 400,000 people. It was a pivotal moment of realization for an entire generation, an epiphany, a moment of realization for the entire country. The hip movement started in San Francisco a couple of years earlier in the Haight Ashbury and the Summer of Love had spread across the nation. There were now millions of hip people with 400,000 of them converging on Woodstock.

Woodstock was a statement to the world, “humanity had evolved”, coming together through Peace, Love and Spirituality. An event whose original intent was to make money became the largest FREE event in history. The hip movement had come of age and was recognized by the world. The principles of love swept the country and we had become the ‘Woodstock Nation”.

Hundreds of San Francisco stars and musical luminaries will perform at this event to commemorate the original principles of Peace, Love and Spirituality. The Woodstock 40th will begin with a blessing by the American Indigenous People and several Beat Generation poets. There will be many speakers from the Peace Movement, the Free Speech Movement and the Anti-War movement along with many of the acts who originally performed at Woodstock (to be announced). There will also be a “Green Vendor Village” with merchandise highlighting the emerging Green Movement.
