Butterfield's Peach Buds
We got our first shipment of Butterfield's candies a number of years ago. It is a testament to their excellence (and "deliciousness") that we continue to bring them in. Last year this award-winning candy company, a North Carolina company at that, expanded their line of retro-packed tins of their fabulous hard candy "buds." They now have Lemon and Raspberry Buds too.

These folks still make their candy by hand, the way the founder of the company did back in 1924. Snap some up for your pantry. You never know who might stop by for a visit, and these sweet-filled tins make great presents. (You-know-what is coming up pretty soon, too, by the way.)

Butterfield's Candies

New from Old Salem

Here's another North Carolina company for you. You might have seen those cute, colorful tins of almost paper-thin Moravian cookies around and about. Well, the same company, Old Salem Baking Company, makes wonderful cheese straws and snack-y nibble-y things, like these "Cheese Petites," packaged in REALLY cute tins illustrated by Vincent Cannino an artist from Winston-Salem.

The tins are fun, the snacks inside all carefully made. Eat the snacks. Keep the tins. (I would if I were you.)

More from Old Salem

And these are some of the tins with the amazingly-thin cookies.

I'm not much of a Moravian expert, but I do know that you could stack about 6 of these cookies on top of each other and they probably wouldn't be as thick as one oreo cookie. They are lovely with a cup of tea or some hot cider. Tuck a couple next to an after-dinner scoop of ice cream. Nice.

Dinners to go (Free dinner drawing*)
Dinners come with a freshly-made green salad, salad dressing of the day, and made-right-here bread of the day. We take reservations until noon or so. Please order by phone (252-1500), by FAX (252-02002) or stop in to speak to one of us in person.
* starting this month we are innaugurating a free dinner-to-go once a month drawing, thought up by Emily, our office wizard (thanks for the great idea, Em!). Here's how it works:
Every time you order a dinner to go you are eligible to enter our drawing. Just drop a card in our drawing jar (a business card works or fill out one of the cards that we have right here) and, at the end of the month, we'll pull one card which will be good for two free dinners-to-go.

Order a lot? Enter a lot!
Good luck!!

Time for the baby

Kris leaves us this week - doctor's orders. We've had a good time with her and have been honored to be a part of the growth of this baby-to-be, but it is time for her to get off her feet and let that baby grow a bit more before emerging.

Thanks, Kris. Have fun. Bring that baby around to see us.

(I'll let you all know when he shows up.)

A Note from Laurey

Oops! Late again.

I'm in Seattle today and could not get close enough to a computer yesterday (Saturday) to sit down and write this note.

It's Chris's birthday today and so I came out for the weekend to help her celebrate. A bit later today we will grill some chicken and open some presents. Right now she's sleeping (I'm the one on East Coast time...)

Yesterday we had an excursion to an island near here. One ferry ride, a few bridges, and one or two missed turns brought us to the edge of the Puget Sound, to the smallest "spa" I've ever seen. We were the only customers. Not that there was even room for more...this is a one woman, one or two client operation.
We spent some hours (I really have no idea how many) soaking and heating, napping, and steaming or plunging (into some very frigid Sound waters) until we were mush-for-bodies. This spa has tubs everywhere, on platforms overlooking the water, under trees, inside cozy log huts. There is a sauna, a steam chair (a very home-made but very functional one-body steam room), and a bunch of other nice places. Of course this was a treat for Chris, but I, as the "birthday partner," got to indulge too.

(By the way, I recommend being a "Birthday partner.")

Today we're going to lay low. We might get a paper. We'll probably make some food at some point or other. And then later, we'll celebrate her day with some of her friends out here.

Tomorrow I'll head back to North Carolina. I have a couple of good books for the plane and a big week to look forward to. Other than that, it's just a regular kind of Sunday. See you soon.

Happy Birthday to you, sweet Chris!

(Today is also the birthday of one of my half sisters. Diane lives in Vermont but is currently in Balttimore, recovering from unexpected Gall Bladder surgery. Happy Birthday, Diane. Keep getting well. See you in December.)

Home life
My dream is to have these two curled up next to each other, taking a nap. We're getting there as you can see by this snap of Tye eating and Skipper enjoying a sip of water. Skipper does have his own water bowl, but I think he likes Tye, even though you won't often catch him admitting it!)
