Menus and Stories for January 29 - February 2, 2007

It's HERE!

Friday was a big day for me. The book, the book, the BOOK arrived!

I keep pinching myself and looking up and, yes, it is really done.

What a day.
What a thrill.
What delight.

The very first delivery

There I was, sitting doing computer work, trying NOT to be as impatient as I felt when, in a whoosh, Mr. FedEX showed up, crowing "Elsie's Biscuits!"

And there they were.

Here is what the boxes looked like. Almost as pretty as a first child.

A Dinner to Go

Here is a snap of one of last week's dinners: Plum and Apple-stuffed Pork Tenderloin. Nice, huh?

If it's your turn to cook and you don't feel like it, give us a shout.
(Can't get much easier than that.)

Dinners to go

Dinners, as you know, come with a freshly-made green salad, salad dressing of the day, and made-right-here bread of the day. We take reservations until noon or so. Please order by phone (252-1500), by FAX (252-02002) or stop in to speak to one of us in person.

As a reminder, every time you order a dinner to go you are eligible to enter our drawing. Just drop a card in our drawing jar (a business card works or fill out one of the cards that we have right here) and, at the end of the month, we'll pull one card which will be good for two free dinners-to-go.

Maybe you'll win next month.

Order a lot? Enter a lot!
Good luck!!

Here's this week's menu:

Special casserole of the week

We make a special casserole each week. Order before noon on Wednesday and we'll have yours ready to pick up between 4:30 and 6:00 that very afternoon. Order a full for 9 portions or, if your gang is smaller, opt for the half-sized one, which serves 4 or so.

They do freeze perfectly so if you want to stock up for the holidays, go right ahead!

This week's offering is:

NEW!!! - Would you like to add bread, butter, and a salad? Just ask and we'll get it all ready for you.

Wednesday, January 31
Seafood Cottage Pie
Full - 42
Half - 21

The Sandwich of the Day

The creative team in the shop and kitchen create a special sandwich each day during the week. The other day Sarah showed up at the office door with a quarter of the day's special for us to taste: turkey on rye with a jicama slaw. The slaw, crunchy, had a surprising zing about it. What a delight.
(I love my job!)

Margy's Toffee is here

Okay - true confessions:

Margy, the toffee gal from Chicago I told you about last week, sent a BIG bag of toffee samples for us to give to YOU but, um, well, it's almost gone and we haven't even put the toffee on display. None of us is content with just one piece of this stuff but all (in the office) have been seen with handfuls of the milk or dark-chocolate covered elixer.

I LOVE this candy. I'll bet you will too - even if we HAVE eaten all the samples. You really CAN trust me on this one.

Noel's Heart Pops

Um. YUM! Need I say more?

A Note From Laurey
January 27, 2007

Oh my what a day.

My book arrived yesterday. Do you have any idea what this is like? I, for one, do not. It just feels so big to me, not like getting a college acceptance letter or winning a prize or getting a new pair of shoes or anything at all. I cant even really say WHAT it feels like, except that it has been in my mind for a long time and, in many versions on paper for a long, long time and so now, to see all these stories and thoughts collected into what really is a book is, well, its just great.

So yesterday I zipped around, sending out a couple to some people who are waiting for it right away. Sweetly, I had gotten a call from a writer from The Boston Globe earlier in the week who is, coincidentally (or not) writing a story about my mother right now. Amazing. So I sent her one. That story will be in March sometime. Anyone live in Boston? Keep your eye out for it.

And then I went off to blow some glass which really felt like the perfect thing to do. Other than that I might have been happy to sit and stare at the pile of boxes of books, but that is not something that seemed to make a whole lot of sense and so, since I really was not functioning very well here at work, glass was a good choice. I was right to do that. Glass takes a lot of concentration, as Ive said and it kept my thoughts focused and hooked on something other than daydreaming about the book the book the BOOK.

At night we had a final rehearsal for tonights Dancing with The Stars performance which, for me, will be a fun goofing around time. Joe, my partner, is the head of the hospital here and so weve decided to start in wheelchairs. The rest of our segment involves wigs and silly clothes and almost out of control whirling and such. I went home in a very good mood and there is nothing wrong with that, right?

But once home I started spinning around again, thinking about the book and what it means and IF it is okay for something to mean more than what it looks like it means, know what I mean? (Im not sure I do) But this book is, as you know, filled with things and stories and foods and reminders and so, yes, it is, to me, more than just an old book.

This morning I put some on a shelf up in the front of the shop. They look kind of sweet there. I like the picture. I like the book. Yup. Today I feel very happy.

Ill be in touch next week.

Yes, you can find them here (and at Malaprops).

It's right around the corner

We have some sweet things for your sweet thing. Come see.
