She works!
I love my job sometimes.  Here I am, dressed for work.  How many 54 year-olds do you know who get to wear shorts and a t-shirt to work?  And red clogs.  And a red hat.  And a red belt.  Nice.  I did put on a white jacket later....

Lauren snapped this photo.  08-08-08 was a special day on her "Flickr" photography site.  She contributes to it often and on that day everyone recorded things for 24 hours.  This was one of her contributions, me helping load up our van on the way to the Penland School.

Buffet signs for Friday's dinner
The menu for the first meal reflected the nationalities of some of the instructors at Penland this summer, making it a fun one for us to prepare ('Imagine you're in the Czech Republic...") and, hopefully, for the guests to enjoy.

Saturday buffet
This one was a meal of flavors from here and there, ingredients, in many cases, from right in our area.  I'll tell you more in my note (see below).

Dinners to go for this week (with a new drawing prize)
Dinners, as you know, come with a freshly-made green salad, salad dressing of the day, and made-right-here bread of the day. We take reservations until noon or so. Please order by phone (252-1500), by FAX (252-02002) or stop in to speak to one of us in person.

As a reminder, every time you order a dinner to go you are eligible to enter our drawing. Just drop a card in our drawing jar (a business card works or fill out one of the cards that we have right here) and, at the end of the month, we'll pull one card which, starting this month, will be good for one of our new "Don't Postpone Joy" (tm) bags.

Maybe you'll win next month.

Order a lot? Enter a lot!
Good luck!!

Special casserole of the week
We make a special casserole each week, usually on Wednesday. Order before noon and we'll have yours ready to pick up between 4:30 and 6:00 that very afternoon. (Yes, you can order in advance too.) Order a full for 9 portions or, if your gang is smaller, opt for the half-sized one, which serves 4 or so.

Say, we'll happily make a salad and provide bread for you if you like, just let us know when you call and we'll get you all set up.

Wednesday,  August 13

Chardonnay Chicken and Rosemary Polenta Pie

Full 34.00

Half: 17.00

New water bottles
We had a gathering at my house last weekend.  The office crew invited Emily (our office manager), Adam (our cafe manager) and their new baby Henry, who is too little to manage anything but eating and sleeping and such.

Unbeknownst to them, we also invited the shop and kitchen crews, an unexpected party for everyone.  These were the "party favors."  (We made extras so you can come get some for your folks too.  You can write your own names on them - or not.  It'll be up to you.)

(They are the good kind of plastic, by the way.)

Barry and Laura's sunflowers
Aren't they beauts?  You can find them at the tailgate markets.  Laura is usually at the North Asheville market on Saturdays.  Barry comes to the French Broad market on Wednesday AND Saturdays.

By the way, I'll be demonstrating how to make Fried Green Tomatoes at the North Asheville market this coming Saturday, the 16th. I'll be there round mid-morning I think (9:30 - 11 or something like that.)  Drop by.  It's Tomato Day!  Yippee!

A bee fountain
I've been wanting some bubbling water at my home for some time.  I finally organized this little fountain and am delighted to see that the bees like it too, perching their little bodies on the floating leaves, sipping and enjoying their little beach.  Whee!

A Note From Laurey

August 10, 2008

Whewf!  Sunday and here I am, writing my note to you.  It’s been a FULL week and I’m just now finding time to sit here composing a note to you.  Hope you had a good Saturday.  Mine was terrific!!!

As you see from the pictures, we had some big work this week.  The Penland School does a huge auction every summer and we were delighted to be a part of it.  Oh what fun it is… huge numbers (for us), big amounts of food, lots of organization, and all done very quickly – their main intent is to loosen people up so they will have a fine time when the auction begins.

Our kitchen crew started it all off, arriving early to cook and cook and cook everything for the two parties we were serving.  We’d done this event before, though not last year, and so, while I felt pretty sure of everything, I paced around like a freak, sitting at my desk, hopping up to check on things, bounding back into the office…and on and on.  I was in a happy mood throughout, which meant that I could be teased (and was).  You know you’re being an idiot when everyone starts telling you to lay off the Coke.

We got everything loaded up and were off right on time.  The day before I had driven to Atlanta to see if I could find some new serving platters.  I HAD found some and was looking forward to getting up to the mountains and seeing how the food looked on them.  But right when we got to Burnsville, still 20 minutes from our party, Jaime called me and said that Breanna had just been stung by a bee.  INSIDE the van!  What!???

Fortunately, we were right by Ingles and we piled in, got her some baking soda and some benadryl and some cortisone cream.  Ingles on a Friday in Burnsville is not like Ingles on a Friday in Asheville.  People move more slowly there, visiting, taking their time, packing bags with care, being deliberate, methodical.  ACK!!!  Finally shaking our heads, we piled back into our vehicles and kept going.

The set up was smooth, simple, fine.  Jaime and I had done the party before and worked easily together.  She set up the two buffets, I demonstrated how I wanted the food presented on our new platters.  Breanna and Charlotte are aces, jumping in, taking charge.  Breanna did not go into anaphylactic shock, thank heavens. And Michael, a helper from before, stepped up too, even joining in the “we’ve GOT this Laurey, you can relax” teasing.  Right on time the buffet was set to go.  The guests, all 350 of them, showed up, and in less than two hours we were on our way back to Asheville.

We did it all again yesterday morning, except this meal was for 425 people.  No bee stings this time.  Less nervousness on my part.  Lovely food.  Great staff.  Perfect weather.  Tra la.

And then, taking rare advantage of being the boss, I did not come back to work (we got back to Asheville at around 3:00) but went home and, though I had planned to nap, puttered, vacuumed, did laundry, petted the dog, watched the bees, straightened things out and then, finally, sacked out with the dog mashed up next to my knees at the bottom of the couch and the cat tucked in my arm.

Later on a friend came over and that was very sweet too.

It was, all in all, just a perfect, perfect day.
