Party Platters, oh my!
Even though we initially said we were going to close next week, we've decided to be open.  Some of us will be away on holiday, but many of us will be here.

Come see us for breakfast (oh, go ahead, you can go to the gym in the afternoon) or for lunch.  We'll be here from 8 until 4 so look around and take dinner home too, while you're at it.

And on New Year's Eve we'll be making party platters:
Italian Antipasto Assortment (like in the picture)
Elsie's Soy and Brown Sugar Chicken Wings
Fresh and Roasted Vegetables
Baked Potato Wedges with Onion Dip
Sliced Roast Beef and Turkey with rolls and spreads
Artisanal Cheeses with Crackers
Small Sweets
Sliced Ham and Elsie's Biscuits with Lusty Monk Mustard Spread

Give us a call and we'll get you all set up.

The maker of the signs
Jaime is the creator of our festive sidewalk board.  She takes her time but the result far surpasses anything that anyone else could do.  Bright, fun, informative, catchy.  Sweet!

Thanks, Jaime!

THIS is French Toast
You COULD share this if you wanted to (I usually do).  Here's a snap of Chris's amazing stuffed french toast.  This is what you could get before a big athletic event, a hike, or, heck, a day of football.  It'll keep you going, that's for sure.

Chris and the team also make omelets, eggs any way you like 'em (all local, from The Egg Lady) and a whole bunch of other things.  Check for the day's special too.  Oh, and don't forget Marty's biscuits, scones, muffins and our daily quiche, burritos and fruit.

The swim team came by the other day, exchanged presents and indulged.  These breakfasts are keeping me going these days too.  Come see what I mean.

Dinners to go for this week
We're not doing our traditional dinners to go this week, BUT our deli case will be stocked with dinner things.  Come by or give a call and we'll tell you what we have.

Please don't forget that we're going to close at 4 this week.  Hope that's okay with you.

Bailey enjoys Christmas Brunch
My baby niece (great niece, actually) got a little help from Tye, who was most gracious in assisting.  No crumbs were left at the end of breakfast, face included. (!) Bailey, who has dogs of her own, didn't seem to mind, and yes, I cleaned her off with a warm towel at the end of the dog bath.

The newest cook in the family
Jones, the great nephew, got a new kitchen from Santa this year.  I showed up just in time to tiptoe over a mass of screws and parts and four adults trying to assemble the whole thing.  More than "some" assembly was required to get it all set up.  Later, as the adults were finishing breakfast, Jones slipped away from the table and into the living room, where he carefully stored all the pots and pans, spoons and forks and utensils.

Before long he'll be cooking on the big kid's stove.  For now, this one is keeping him busy.

And then, back in the office
Though it is warm here in Kentucky, it was cold in North Carolina before we left and Henry got all tucked in before braving the elements.

Cute children surround me these days.  What a fine thing that is.

A Note from Laurey

December 28, 2008

And whoosh, Christmas is done.

I'm in Kentucky. Heather is napping. Lucinda is doing projects. Tye is taking Heather's lead, sleeping next to me and Lewis, the Jack Russell sits, waiting. Horses have been fed. Guests are coming in a while so cooking will start soon. I rode my bike earlier today - a slog of 20 miles (is it true that my bike ride is now less than two months away?). Lucinda worked her horse in the "round pen," Heather, earlier in the day, sorted out some things that will get posted on her eBay site.

All is normal around here.

We WERE thinking of going to New York. But we decided that we just felt like staying home. Good thing. Travel this year seemed hellish and we're all glad to just stay put. We also discussed filling our days with local museums and local events. But our days fill up nicely enough without extra things. We all work hard during the year and so just hanging around with each other seems just fine.

Oh, there goes Lucinda, out to put strung cranberries and popcorn on the outdoor Christmas tree. It was supposed to be the indoor one, but, as it turns out, no one felt like dealing with it so it has been turned into a gift for the birds. We can see it from the dining room and that, as it turns out, is just fine.

What we HAVE been doing is a lot of cooking. We've had guests for breakfast and dinner every day and that has been fun. I've been out of the kitchen at work for some time and suggested that cooking with my sisters would be a good thing. So every meal has been a chance to catch up with folks, really getting time to talk, tell stories. It has been very relaxing. No flying or driving (for us), no stress. No fuss. Nice.

So now, tonight, I'm trying a new chicken recipe from Sarah Moulton and Jean Anderson. I get to meet Sarah in February so it'll be fun to tell her about this dinner. And we're also having some Barefoot Contessa broccoli that a friend made at her Christmas party a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I'll make a free form Apple Tart for dessert. Yum!

Which means that I need to go.

But I'll be back next Tuesday. The gang, some of them anyway, will be in on Monday. We'd love to see you, hear your stories, see your new Christmas presents.

Thanks for being such a big part of our 2008. And thanks, in advance, for coming to join us in 2009. We have all sorts of things planned. We're looking forward to sharing them with you.

Okey doke. I'll be in touch next week.
Cheers,
Laurey

The Masterton Christmas Wreath
We have lots of decorations and my sisters had plenty of time to get them out but one thing led to another and time was taken up with other pursuits.  When I got here on Christmas day decorations were still boxed.  No worries from me.  We hung up this wreath, added Heather's little bubble lights, put our presents underneath, and carried on as always.

And, as always, it was, in its own way, perfection.
