SUNDAY breakfast!!!!!!!
We asked you.
You told us you liked the idea.
We're doing it!

Starting this coming Sunday, February 1 come see us for Breakfast/Brunch.
We'll be open from 9 until around 1 (or so)
Chris and Kether will be here whipping up morning classics and daily specials.

It'll be our familiar, easy cafe-style service.
It'll be delicious.
It'll be fun.

Come (okay?)

Um, thanks.

And, soon, Simple Suppers
The night of the inauguration was one of my favorite nights ever.  We hosted a MoveOn.org party and WOW what a night!  Lots and lots of people came, had a glass of wine, a small or large plate of some of Obama's favorite foods, and then sat with friends and talked and talked and laughed and talked some more.

I flitted around, clearing plates, visiting, schmoozing.  The mood was SO nice.  Everyone was SO happy.  And, much to my surprise, I found myself thinking about how nice, how REALLY nice it would be, to do this kind of thing more often.

So we're going to figure it out and very soon we're going to stay open later.  I'm saying "Simple Supper" for now.  We'll see what we end up calling it.  It'll happen soon.  Just think - come by for an easy supper before going to the Fine Arts Theatre or to The Orange Peel or, well, just on your way home.

I'll fill you in as we get some more clarity.
Do you like this idea?  Will you come?  I hope so.

Revelers
These were two of the more festive Obama celebrants the other night.  She had some fancy red eyeglasses that blinked and twinkled and he, well he just glowed with happiness.  It was like that all day.  She, it turns out, moved to Asheville because of seeing our "Don't Postpone Joy" bumpersticker and realizing that her life needed to be different.

He was here already.

They met.

I'd be glowing too.

Cooking Classes
Our cooking class series is off to a fine start.  My classes are almost full.  Chris still has some room in his series.  And really, if I was going to be here, I'd sign up for them.  He's a fun fellow, a great cook, and a patient, good teacher.  (I know, I've seen him here at work.)

In his series you'll learn how to make soups (March 3), sauces (March 10), and then some simple to do yet snazzy-looking entrees (March 17).  Each class will build on the previous one in his series, so I'd recommend signing up for the whole bunch, though, if there's room, you can just take one or two.

The classes will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to about 8:30.  You'll get to taste everything he demonstrates.  And you'll get recipes AND a Don't Postpone Joy mug to take home.  Oh - and a glass of wine to enjoy during the class.  Each class costs 45.00.  Interested?  Give a shout (252-1500) or jot a note laurey@laureysyum.com.

Got flowers?
I really wanted to tell you about a new person I met but I'm at home and the card with all the information is at work and so this will be a partial story.  But q woman named Lisa came in yesterday to introduce herself to us.  She and a partner have a wonderful new non-profit.  They gather up flowers after parties and weddings and take them local nursing homes and shelters. The donor gets a tax write off.  And the folks in the nursing homes get nice flowers.  Sweet!

We'll definitely be hooking her up with brides.  I think it's one of the nicest things I've ever heard of.

(And I promise to give you their contact information next week.)

***

Also stay tuned next week because I want to tell you about an important conversation we'll be hosting on February 5th - a  Lance Armstrong Foundation Global Conversation on Cancer.  Ours will be the kickoff event in the entire United States.  Zounds!

(By the way - want to have a special thing like this?  Just let us know.)

A Note from Laurey
January 24, 2009

What a week! Boy, after feeling like I was holding my breath, things seemed to blast open on this week. I held my breath all day Monday, waiting for it to be Tuesday and then waiting for it to be daylight and then waiting for it to be morning and then waiting for it to be noon.

Around 11:00 we turned on the radio at work and, at 11:50 we lined up chairs in the café and sat, rapt, as our new President took the oath of office. It was a magical, magical moment. And, in that moment, I felt like I started to let some air in, out, in, out.

The afternoon was quiet and I had no idea if all the people who were supposed to come to our party would come. It was cold and I wouldn't have blamed anyone for staying home. But right at 6:00 people started to drift in and by 6:25 the café was packed, people carrying their chili and beer to tables, pushing the chairs around, rearranging things, making themselves at home. At one table, a cluster of friends leaned in, sharing the highlights of the day's celebration. Up in front, people who had not known each other shared tables, shared stories, shared friendship. Someone had given us some balloons and they made the place look very festive.

Later on, I, still quivering from the energy, started to let in all the voices of all the people who have been saying that they'd like to come to our place at night. It suddenly began to make sense. This place is a nice place and so I just felt like, well, why not? So we're going to work it out and pretty soon we'll be open for you. (And this very weekend we're going to start with Sunday breakfast. Fun, eh?)

On Wednesday I was still feeling spirited and began to feel like I was emerging from a major slump and emerging felt really good. The balloons were still full of helium and the place still looked festive and I was so happy about our new President. (I was not thrilled that the balloons set off my shop's motion detectors, making the alarm company call me to go in to work in the middle of a nice dinner I had cooked at my house for my sister, but she's good company so it didn't matter that much.) And when I got home again I got an e-mail from our new President.  What a change.  Amazing.

On Thursday I was part of a fancy dinner for a couple hundred guests, a fundraiser for the scholarship program of our Independent Restaurant Association. I had a BLAST! All of us chefs helped plate each other's courses and it was a very, very fun night. Big time teamwork. Great food. Big fun. We all want to do more so stay tuned.

By Friday I was still in a good mood. The balloons were still full (who has ever heard of balloons staying inflated for that long?) And at night I made a birthday dinner for a friend who had gone to the Inauguration and a bunch of friends and I sat around making her tell story after story. "And THEN what happened?' "And then!?"

Today is Saturday and it's taken me until night to finish my newsletter because there was a computer glitch. But instead fo fuming I left work, took the pup for a walk, and just took a deep breath. No reason to sweat this small annoyance. And when I left work the balloons were still full of helium. And I still felt good.

I'll be in touch next week.

Henry's off to College
Well, he's going to "Baby Tech", the day care at AB Tech.  Our little boy is now a bit too rambunctious to be content here in our office.  It's a big transition for Adam and Emily, but they waited for months to get to the top of the list and now, well, if they don't take the spot, it's another year or so wait.

He'll still come visit and I promise to take as many pictures as I can.
