In Silver City, New Mexico
People compare Silver City to Asheville.  Rightly so.  It is a cute little town.  A couple of coffee shops.  A couple of bakeries.  A couple of nice restaurants.  A couple of restaurants named for the owner - women.  Diane's.  Vicki's.  So on.

I strolled around on our day off morning, snapping pictures of murals and wandering on back streets, smelling apple blossoms.  What a geek!  What a perfect thing to do.


Morning Pizza
Diane, of Silver City restaurant fame, not only has a restaurant, but she also has a bakery.  I stopped in for a snack on my way to my day off massage.  They had this pizza that was SO good. I took it outside and ate it and drank an icy orange soda and was very, very content.


The Western Continental Divide
We climbed over this pass a few days ago.  There is a certain satisfaction at reaching the top.  The middle is not as satisfying, especially when it is clear that you have to go to the top eventually. 

This top was fun.  Not too hard to get to.  But satisfying all the same.


Dinners to go for this week
Dinners come with a freshly-made green salad, salad dressing of the day,
and made-right-here bread of the day. We take reservations until noon or so.

or stop in to speak to one of us in person.

Dinners are ready at 4:30 and can be picked up until we close at 6:00 pm.

We make a special casserole each Wednesday.
Give us a call on Tuesday before we close and we'll fix you up.
Order a half if you have around 4 folks, or, if you have a bigger group,
Or just like leftovers, order a full sized one.
Then come pick up between 4:30 and 6:00 on Wednesday.

Over 8,000'
Now THIS summit was MUCH more worthy of a sense of satisfaction.  This is us at the top of Emory pass.  The sign says 8,828'.  I think it is really 8,228', but I took a picture anyway.  High is high and this one was high.  One of the riders with a GPS reported that we had climbed some 5,000+ feet that day.  It felt like it.  The reward was pretty fine.  8 uninterrupted miles of screaming downhill.  All the way to our Lodge, tucked into the Black Range. 

Oh so nice.


Hatch Chiles Rellenos
Today we rode out of the New Mexico mountains into the Rio Grande plain.  A fertile area, it is the home of Hatch Chiles.  Oh my!  I have found my new love.  Hatch Chiles Rellenos at The Pepper Pot.

Put it on your list.

And speaking of lists, it seems that many of you WANTED to come to our Argentine night (at Laurey's) but had travel plans for March.  The fabulous team at Laurey's has rescheduled the dinner - complete with wine tasting, for April 25th at 7pm.  I'll remind you again, but please do put this one on your calendar and give a call (252-1500) to place your reservations.


Morning Light
The light this morning made me understand the allure this state has.  Simply clear and clean and very white, the hills and scrub pines glistened.  Rock formations hovered.  Distant ranges of mountains beckoned. 

And we rode fast and long and hard and had an utter blast.

A Note from Laurey
Hi Hi Hi.

Greetings today from Las Cruces, New Mexico.  Amazingly, tomorrow we ride into Texas.  This means we've already ridden through California and Arizona.  And soon, New Mexico.

This is quite an adventure.  Quite.  My body is getting stronger.  My skin is getting tanner (though I am screaming through the sun screen).  And I am settling into the routine of these days of doing nothing but riding, eating, resting, drinking, peeing, eating, drinking...you know.

The time away gives me a chance to sink into thought.  I have no conclusions.  None.  They hover.  When I need them, they'll appear.

The other day I was interviewed for a tv show in Silver City.  (When it is edited and available, I'll let you know.)  The interviewer started off with a good question. "Why?"  Good one!  That prompted a good long response from me, a wandering of thought, a response to the obvious question but then that carried me into other parts and other thoughts and I HOPE they will edit it to make some sense out of the whole thing. 

I CAN say that I am very glad to be here, very grateful to the gang at Laurey's who are stepping up in such a big way, running the place, making and serving great food with grace and skill.  They do that when I am there too, of course, but it is considerably different to do ALL of the jobs AND mine too.

I am grateful to be given this sabbatical of sorts.  I've wanted a sabbatical, a break, for a long time.  This does not mean I am leaving or even thinking of leaving.  But it is really, really good to be gone and to have my life so simple right now.

I'm told that the map of my ride is on display at work and there are little pins marking where I am.  We just finished our nightly meeting and tomorrow we have a 66 mile ride into El Paso, Texas.  We'll be in that state for a long time, a full third of our trip.  But instead of getting to swept up by all that, I'm just trying to do nothing but think about tonight and then tomorrow, when it comes. 

That's all I can say at the moment.

Laurey Bikes - the blog


The Big Dogs
I have been riding with three other women, though there are 21 women on this ride in all.  I talk about these three a lot on my blog, so you might be familiar with them already.  Today, without prior planning, we dressed in the same jersey, the official ride jersey. 

We have a little bit of a reputation.  I've heard people calling us "The Big Dogs", which is kind of a goofy thing.  We are not anything special, but we do like riding with each other.  And now we're in a routine and it's just, well, comfortable.  I do like riding with these three.   We are well-matched and we help each other out when anyone gets tired or has a flat or wants to go slower - or faster.

Here we are.
