ROD PIAZZA & THE MIGHTY FLYERS BLUES QUARTET : : SOUL MONSTER
Over the last 44 years of playing music Rod Piazza's virtuosity on the harmonica and respect for tradition has been celebrated by fans and critics alike. The Mighty Flyers have taken home the prestigious Blues Music Award for Band of the Year no less than four times, Rod himself was honored in 1998 for the Harmonica Instrumentalist of the Year, and in 2008 Honey Piazza took home her very first Blues Music Award for the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year.

In 2005, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers landed a new home with the Los Angeles based Delta Groove Music, a label that has provided the band with many “firsts” in their long running career. For The Chosen Who, their Delta Groove debut, was an ambitious project that featured a host of special guests (a first in the Piazza discography), which included Finis Tasby, Kid Ramos, James Gadson, Johnny Dyer, Randy Chortkoff and the late Phil Guy, in addition to a bonus DVD of behind the scenes footage shot during the recording sessions.

Their follow up release ThrillVille saw the departure of longtime Flyers’ bassist Bill Stuve and the band rechristening themselves as a quartet (another first!), while turning out another satisfying program of swinging West Coast and lowdown Chicago blues.

Now Piazza prepares to unveil his latest creation; a masterpiece and melding of soul, talent and art. There are plenty of thrills to be found as The Mighty Flyers continue to soar to new heights. IT’S ALL HERE…from the aggressive George Smith instrumental Sunbird, to the deep blues recital of Tell Me About It Sam, to the Jimmy Forrest jazz influenced Hey, Mrs. Jones. Piazza delights as he breathes life into funky new originals and pays loving tribute to a pantheon of blues greats including Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, and Slim Harpo, as well as many more surprises along the way.

The time has arrived for Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers Blues Quartet to unleash… the Soul Monster!!!

THE HOMEMADE JAMZ BLUES BAND : : I GOT BLUES FOR YOU
Their debut recording last year, Pay Me No Mind, led to the Homemade Jamz receiving a Blues Music Award nomination for Best New Artist Debut. Along the way, they appeared on the Today Show, were featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered”, and profiled on the CBS Sunday Morning News. Their new CD, I Got Blues For You, showcases some incredible songwriting, Ryan’s fantastic lead guitar, Kyle’s booming bass lines, and Taya’s hard-hitting drums.

The Homemade Jamz Blues Band rocked the Blues world by coming in second in the 2007 International Blues Challenge in Memphis— competing against 100 other bands and are also the youngest blues band in America  with Kyle (aged 14 on Bass guitar), Taya (aged 10 on drums) and Ryan (aged 16 on lead guitar and vocals)  to ever be nominated for a Blues Music Award.

CANDYE KANE : : SUPERHERO
Candye Kane may very well be the toughest girl alive. Having survived an extremely dysfunctional childhood and becoming an unwed mother at the tender age of seventeen certainly taught this girl to grow up fast. But while life may not have dealt her the best hand to start, her precarious upbringing and turbulent past has remarkably ingrained within her one invaluable skill – survival. Through all of the trials and tribulations that life has thrown her way Candye has become a master of self preservation; meeting each and every challenge head on, and ultimately drawing inspiration and personal inner strength from the experiences she has faced during times of adversity. Ultimately it was through these difficult life tests that prepared Candye for her greatest challenge that was yet to come.

On Friday, February 22, Candye was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after checking into the emergency room at the Scripps Memorial Hospital with complaints of abdominal pain. In an instant her life had suddenly and unexpectedly altered course. Her European tour was cancelled and in exchange a surgical procedure was scheduled to make an attempt to remove the tumor. With no savings or health insurance to speak of, and haunted by the memories of past friends who had succumbed to this disease, Candye was faced with a most uncertain future. Fortunately, she would soon learn that she would not have to face this daunting challenge alone. Caring friends and fans from around the world rallied to her side and threw numerous benefits to help raise money for the mounting medical expenses. One year and two CT scans later, and Candye has thankfully been pronounced cancer free.

With renewed energy and a new lease on life, Candye emerged from the recording studio with her most personal and rewarding work to date. Backed by her regular touring band and produced by herself, along with her guitarist - the amazingly talented Laura Chavez; Candye once again finds herself surrounded and supported by a caring group of friends and individuals including special guests Dave Gonzales (The Paladins, Hacienda Brothers) and Stephen Hodges (Mavis Staples, Tom Waits), along with new label mates Kid Ramos (The Mannish Boys, Los Fabulocos) and Mitch Kashmar.

Having overcome her heroic battle with cancer, Candye now proudly makes her triumphant return! Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s “Superhero,” Candye’s ninth release and official debut for Delta Groove Music.

BETTYE LAVETTE: AMERICAN IDOL SINGERS DONT DESERVE OVERNIGHT FAME

Bettye LaVette photographed by Elizabeth Fladung

(Vanity Fair:Michael Hogan)

Bettye LaVette has become famous (at last) by singing unexpected songs. Her recent albums, I'VE GOT MY OWN HELL TO RAISE (2005) and THE SCENE OF THE CRIME (2007), feature songs by Dolly Parton, Elton John, and Fiona Apple, of all people. But with her new, iTunes-only EP (out Tuesday, June 16), she’s serving up more traditional fare: the title track is Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come”—which LaVette sang with Jon Bon Jovi, of all people, at the Obama inauguration festivities back in January—and others in the collection were popularized by Thelonious Monk, Billie Holliday, and Bill Withers.

As you may know, LaVette spent four long decades waiting for her moment in the spotlight. At age 16, she had a hit with “My Man, He’s a Loving Man” (1962), but her next real break didn’t come for another 45 years (though she released plenty of records and even worked for six years on Broadway). Exile made her what she is today; you can hear it in her voice, fierce and emotionally singed, but also in her unvarnished opinions about the young singers on American Idol, who haven’t earned it yet, baby, but sure do think they have.

I recently had the chance to speak with Bettye, and found her to be great company: feisty, funny, and full of great stories. Here’s what she had to say.

"BLUES AT THE LAKE" PRESENTS BLUES MUSIC MASTERS AT HARVEYS LAKE TAHOE, SATURDAY, JULY 11
Stellar line-up includes three Masters of Chicago Blues Guitar,
plus Mavis Staples, Elvin Bishop, The Mannish Boys and more!

The San Francisco Blues Festival and Harveys Lake Tahoe are proud to present “Blues at The Lake” on Saturday, July 11, for an historic gathering of blues music legends at the 2009 Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series on the Harveys Outdoor Arena stage.

For 2009, “Blues at The Lake” presents: Lonnie Brooks, Eddy Clearwater, Jimmy Johnson, Mavis Staples, Elvin Bishop, The Mannish Boys and Mitch Kashmar. SFBF founder/director Tom Mazzolini, who also hosts the popular “Blues by The Bay” radio show in the Bay Area, will emcee the Tahoe show.

Headlining this year’s show are the Masters of Chicago Blues Guitar, starring Lonnie Brooks, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater and Jimmy Johnson. Lonnie Brooks played with many blues greats of the late 50s and 60s, including the inimitable Jimmy Reed, before establishing himself as one of the Windy City’s guitar giants. Eddy Clearwater began learning the blues guitar from Sunnyland Slim, Earl Hooker and his longtime mentor Magic Sam. Known for his slashing left handed blues/rock style, Clearwater’s onstage energy and antics – often wearing a full, Native American headdress to honor his Cherokee heritage – “The Chief” is one of the last original exponents of the Chicago-style electric blues. Jimmy Johnson is still going strong on the blues festival circuit, playing incredible, soaring guitar solos on his signature red Gibson. His melodic tenor voice and staccato fretwork are reminiscent of other Chicago guitar legends such as Otis Rush and Albert King.

One of the most powerful voices in soul, gospel and blues music, Mavis Staples’ incredible career began in the 1950s as a member of the legendary Staples Singers. Their versions of songs including, “Uncloudy Day,” “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall” and “For What It’s Worth,” along with “I’ll Take You There,” featured Mavis Staple’s majestic contralto voice to become hit songs around the world.

Longtime Lake Tahoe favorite Elvin Bishop and his band guarantee “big fun” at this year’s “Blues at The Lake” super-show. Although his big, crossover hit was the memorable, “Fooled Around and Fell In Love,” Bishop’s incredible guitar work and songwriting prowess have produced a long list of great CD’s including, most recently, The Skin I’m In, Gettin’ My Groove Back, and the 2008 Grammy nominated, all-star hit, The Blues Rolls On.

Playing classic blues in the West Coast, Texas and Chicago styles, The Mannish Boys are an L.A.-based band that’s getting the attention of blues fans everywhere. The core group performing at Harveys includes blues greats Finis Tasby, Bobby Jones, Randy Chortkoff, Richard Innes, Kid Ramos, Kirk Fletcher and Ronnie James Weber. Joining the “Boys” for this show is the phenomenal blues harmonica player Mitch Kashmar. As Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds noted: “Mitch was only 19 when I first heard him and he sounded good even then. These days, oh man, is he tough!”

The San Francisco Blues Festival presents “Blues at The Lake” is on stage at Harveys Outdoor Arena, Saturday, July 11, beginning at 6 p.m., with doors at 5 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25, $39 and $55, and are on sale now at Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.ticketmaster.com and www.apeconcerts.com. SOUTH ORANGE INTERNATIONAL BLUES FESTIVAL PUSHED BACK TO 2010
The festival's organizers are now aiming for Sept. 6, 2010.

The organizers of the South Orange International Blues Festival are now aiming to stage the event on Sept. 6, 2010, a year later than originally intended.
The "festival was postponed to allow ample time for fundraising and sponsorship solicitation," said co-organizer Michael Griot, in an e-mail.

The Reddan Brothers, Michael Hill, Dave Stryker and the One & Nines have signed on to perform, and major blues acts including Joanne Shaw Taylor (UK), Oli Brown (UK), Keb' Mo', Buddy Guy, Richie Havens, Sue Foley (Canada) and Shemekia Copeland are being targeted, according to Griot.

As planned, the festival would require Sloan Street to be closed off, and the main stage would go up in Lot 9—the large municipal lot across the street from Starbucks and Cait & Abby's—and would face the train station. A smaller stage would be erected on the corner of Sloan Street and South Orange Avenue, also facing the station. Organizers have applied for a special event permit.

The organizing body, the North Jersey Blues Alliance, has its first public event scheduled for July 29, when it will team up with the Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs to host an installment of the summer Wednesday night concert series at Flood's Hill, featuring Michael Hill's Blues Mob.

T-BONE WALKER BLUESFEST
This T-Bone Walker poster was created by artist Terry Ward of Jefferson

Organizers of the fourth annual T-Bone Walker Blues Festival think the best way to honor the Linden-area native is to introduce new generations to the sounds he loved.

Guitar greats Eric Clapton and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan both have credited Aaron "T-Bone" Walker, (1910-1975), with promoting the electric guitar from rhythm section to center stage. The two-day festival at the Music City Texas Theater and its outdoor grounds celebrates the memory of the dual Rock and Roll and Blues hall of famer, its executive producer said.

"Secondly, it's to try to introduce a new generation to this American musical art form," event producer and Linden Economic Development Corp. Director Russ Wright said. "And it's to help young blues musicians with a place to come and perform."

Those young musicians include 18-year-old Marquise Knox, a St. Louis guitar player who has played for 60,000 school students in the Dallas-based Blue Shoes Project. Knox will perform on the outdoor stage on June 19 and move inside the Music City Texas Theater on June 20.

The outdoor music, on Legionnaire Field adjacent to the theater, is free Friday and costs $5 Saturday, Wright said. The outdoor lineup also includes a high school blues combo, The Colton O'Neill Band from the Dallas area and headliner Guitar Shorty, who played with T-Bone Walker.

Regional favorite Bugs Henderson will headline Saturday's outdoor show.
The indoor lineup, which costs a minimum $35 Friday and $50 Saturday, is headlined by The Fabulous Thunderbirds alumnus Jimmy Vaughan, brother of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. Rocker Wes Jeans, who recently recorded a live album at the Linden venue, also headlines inside.

Songwriter, session guitarist and two-time Grammy winning producer Gary "Whitey Johnson" Nicholson also will perform indoors. Nicholson returns for his fourth festival appearance.

Would-be guitar stars also will limber up their fingers in a Guitar Hero competition on both days, in a traveling version of the video game brought by retailer, Gamestop. The contests, and appearances by four professional wrestlers, are more ways that organizers hope to draw young people, Wright said.
"We're really trying to get young people to come hear the blues," he said.
Festival profits, beyond those needed to plan the fifth event next year, are dedicated to two local nonprofit groups. They are the Texas Music City organization, which refurbished the old American Legion Hall into a 400-seat performance venue, and the Fairview Junior-Senior High School Reunion Corp., which built and operates the Fairview Community Center.

The latter is headquarters for the Pleasant Hills Quilting Group, which will perform a history of the Underground Railroad Quilt on both the indoor and outdoor stages. Wright said that musical and spoken presentation will be filmed for possible distribution.

Members of the nonprofit reunion corporation volunteer at the annual blues festivals. "That was sort of a no-brainer," reunion corporation president Thomas Northcutt said. "We actually used to have our reunions in their building, in the Legionnaires Hall." He added the blues festival is integral to Linden's development as a music tourism destination. That effort is spearheaded by classmates Don Henley, co-founder of The Eagles and official presenter of the fourth annual festival, and Richard Bowden, who performed with Roger McGuinn, formerly of the Byrds, and troubadour Dan Fogleberg, before becoming half of the country comedy duo, Pinkard and Bowden.
"(Walker) was just part of the whole thing," Northcutt said. "And, hopefully Linden is still growing. Maybe we'll become a new Branson, (Mo.)."

SAN DIEGO MUSIC FOUNDATION PRESENTS SECOND ANNUAL NORTH PARK MUSIC THING
Tickets for Three-Day Music and Media Conference Available Now, Call To Artists Underway

SAN DIEGO ˆ  North Park Music Thing (NPMT), previously known as North By North Park , is back for its second year to bring industry leaders and musicians together for a weekend of panel discussions, demo review sessions and live performances.
The annual three-day music and media conference will be held at the Lafayette Hotel, located at 2223 El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego, August 7-9, 2009. A 150-musical act showcase on more than 18 San Diego venue stages will follow the workshops on Saturday, August 8 and will highlight performances from bands and individual musicians from across the Southwestern United States

Event organizers are accepting entries for performers at Saturday's Music Fest through June 12.

"We're excited to see North Park Music Thing build on the success of last year's event," said Kevin Hellman, President of the San Diego Music Foundation. "This year we're adding a Sunday Street Fest along El Cajon Blvd, which will feature three live music stages, international food court, live art shows and a variety of street vendors."

NPMT's featured speaker and performer is bassist and songwriter, Nathan East. A San Diego native, East has co-written and performed songs with George Harrison, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton and B.B. King, and served as a long standing member of Clapton's studio and touring band. East played on Clapton's Grammy award-winning "Unplugged" album, and also lent his talent to Clapton's "Change The World," which was awarded Song of the Year at the 1997 Grammy Awards.

Workshop discussions on Saturday and Sunday will be led by panelists with experience in various areas of the music industry including engaging social media in promotions, breaking into the music business, hiring a manager, songwriting techniques, and more. Panelists include Robbie Lloyd of Silva Artist Management, Peter Jesperson of New West Records, Nanci Walker of Universal Music Publishing, Amy Stevens of KROQ-FM (106.7), Casey Robison of BMI, Tim Mays of The Casbah, Albert Ching of OC Weekly, Josh Briggs of ASCAP, Mike Locke of Rhino Records, and Josh Feingold of SESAC, among others.

All proceeds from North Park Music Thing will be donated to the San Diego Music Foundation, which seeks to enrich the San Diego music community by providing professional development opportunities and assistance to local musicians. The Foundation organizes the annual San Diego Music Awards show, recognizing the achievements of the local music community, and also encourages the next generation of musicians through its Taylor Guitars for Schools program, which has provided over 1000 guitars to 56 elementary schools in San Diego County, who include guitar in their music curriculum.

BLUES FESTIVAL GUIDE MAGAZINE GETS REVIEWED
About.com Guide to Blues by Reverend Keith A. Gordon

Guide Review - 7th Annual Blues Festival Guide 2009

Pros
Invaluable source of blues festival information
Digital version available to read online for free!

Cons
Newsprint format is inexpensive but cheap
Smaller guide this year eliminates some valuable information

Description
Invaluable annual guide to blues festivals
92-pages w/covers, 8.5"x11" standard magazine size
Inexpensive newsprint format
Price is right - free!

The 7th Annual Blues Festival Guide 2009 is an invaluable directory to the world of blues festivals and live music. This year's 92-page issue is packed with half and full-page ads for blues festivals, arranged by date beginning with May 2009 and running through the summer to the end of the year.

If the Blues Festival Guide stopped here, that would be more than enough to ensure its place on the blues lover's desk or side table for easy, constant access. The magazine also includes many articles, including an informative overview of the new B.B. King Museum in Mississippi, an educational piece on drumming by notable beat-keeper Tony Braunagel, and a lengthy piece on the blues music scene in Canada.

Legendary blues pianist Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins is featured in this year's guide, along with a fine article on the growing movement of "blues art" by Kreg Yingst. The Bluzapalooza tour of Iraq is covered, and the guide includes lots of other blues-related content.

Even the magazine's advertising is illuminating beyond the simple festival listings of featured performers. Label ads, and those for independent blues musicians, feature new and upcoming CD releases, letting the reader know "what's going on" in the blues community.

Best of all, you can't beat the price of the 7th Annual Blues Festival Guide 2009 - free from your local blues society, blues clubs, and at festivals. If you can't find a copy in your area, the guide is also available for $7 postpaid from the Blues Festival Guide website, if you'd like a print copy.

The entire guide can also be read online as a free digital edition, with links to the guide's advertisers. While you're there, you can also sign up for a free weekly email newsletter. No matter how you slice it, the Blues Festival Guide is a bona fide winner!

Po'Boyz Sunday Blues Jam
Every Sunday from 7 to 11pm

Each Sunday they have a different Host Band. Sometimes it's a local blues band and sometimes it's a guest International or Regional Band. We've had Kenny Blue Ray from the San Francisco Bay area host several times. Kenny Neal stayed on one night and treated our jammers to a set and invited some local jammers up to play. Jackie Payne will be guest hosting Jun 28th. Local Bands have included Big John Evans and Marshall Wikenson.

The host band plays a short opening set to get the crowd warmed up and then they start inviting up the jammers. We ask that people come early to sign up as we try our best to get everyone up to play.

The Po'Boyz kitchen closes at 9:30pm. They have a great full menu from steaks to Cajun pasta, chicken, barbq.

KOKO TAYLOR TRIBUTE:

Koko Taylor passed away, aged 80, on June 3, 2009. In tribute, Elwood goes back to the Radio Hour’s final interview with the Queen of the Blues, after the release of what was to be her final album, 2007’s OLD SCHOOL. Ms. Taylor talks about her origins and personal history in the blues, her legendary fans and friends, like Hound Dog Taylor, and Willie Dixon. And, of course, tracks from her rip-roaring CD, OLD SCHOOL will be played. Stay tuned for a chance to win four CDs from Delta Groove Records: discs from Rod Piazza, Candye Kane, and a two volume sampler of Delta Groove artists playing on “Live At Ground Zero.” Plus, we feature a sample of Candye Kane’s new CD, SUPERHERO.
