ZAKIYA HOOKER : : KEEPING IT REAL
Zakiya Hooker “Keeps It Real” with New CD Release.

Zakiya Hooker brings all this to the table and more with the release of her fourth CD “Keeping It Real,” produced by her husband, Ollan Bell; on their independent label Boogie With The Hook Records. As the daughter of the late, blues icon, John Lee Hooker, who better to keep it real than Zakiya? The blues sangin’ songstress literally has the music flowin’ through her veins.

Keeping It Real” is a bluesy, soulful serenade of thirteen tracks that span the spectrum of the landscape of the blues; the results are an expansive project that finds her not only performing a duet with her dad, but also covering a few classics.

Keeping It Real” does just that with the opening track “Hug U Kiss,” an upbeat, up-tempo, bass heavy cover of a John Lee Hooker original. On “Cold, Cold Feeling” penned by Zakiya and her husband Ollan Bell, she slows the pace way down with a blues notion of love lost and gone astray.  With “Desconfio” Zakiya proves she is not new to the blues, but indeed true to the blues, offering her own Spanish language rendition of the Latin American classic.

Covering one of her dad’s most famous tunes, “One Bourbon One Scotch” Zakiya rocks with the assuredness of one who knows her roots and knows them well. She takes us “Over The Top” with a purity of tone that simply cradles the heart with emotion on track eleven. Then Zakiya all but shuts it down on the last track when she joins her late dad for a duet on “Rock These Blues Away.”

Zakiya Hooker is a regal combination of sass and soul. And “Keeping It Real” is a defining contribution to her legacy as a woman singing the blues.

THE TWISTERS : : COME OUT SWINGIN
The Twisters are Canada’s premier jump/blues band. Period. This is their second CD for NorthernBlues Music and it’s a tremendous followup to their critically acclaimed After the Storm.

Come Out Swingin’ stays true to their high-spirited jump/blues tradition, but includes many new grooves and feels—and includes special guest Kenny “Blues Boss’ Wayne, on piano—the 2006 JUNO Award winner for Best Blues Album.

This is what modern Blues is all about. Tight arrangements, great vocal harmonies, and spot on yet understated instrumental performances. All with a firm foothold into the roots and tradition of the Blues. With one exception, a Sonny Boy Williamson tune, the CD is packed with all original tunes that bring freshness and spontaneity to the sometimes over worked playbook of the Blues. A fantastic musical statement." - Barrelhouse Blues e-news, Boston

CAT HEAD BLUES & FOLK ART CELEBRATES 7 YEARS IN CLARKSDALE
(poster by Chris Kruse)

CLARKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI -- When Roger Stolle told his corporate bosses in St. Louis that he was quitting his lucrative marketing job to open a blues store in the Mississippi Delta seven years ago, they thought he was crazy.

"My actual boss was the president of the company, and he literally came out of his chair," remembers Stolle. "He just thought I was nuts to give up a position that so many folks used to fight over. I just told him that this was more about what's in my heart than my wallet. If I don't do this now, then I may never."
Seven years later, the Cat Head dream lives on.

Cat Head Delta Blues & Folk Art in historic Clarksdale, Mississippi, celebrates its seventh anniversary this weekend with a series of special events timed to coincide with the annual Sunflower River Blues & Gospel Festival.

"Cat Head actually had its first retail sale at the end of July, seven years ago," explains Stolle. "But the store's grand opening was held during the Sunflower River Blues Fest that year. We've held the anniversary celebration that weekend ever since."

Called "One of the 17 coolest record stores in America" by the international music magazine Paste, Cat Head has continued to grow as it worked to promote the blues in Mississippi. It also was recognized last year with a "Keeping the Blues Alive" award from the Blues Foundation and a listing in the book, "1,000 Places to See Before You Die."

Still, Cat Head is more about mission than anything.

"Look, if I was in this strictly for the money, I would have stayed in St. Louis doing the corporate thing," says Stolle. "From its inception, Cat Head has been about organizing and promoting the blues -- including its personalities and culture -- from within. That's why I also  started a record label and co-founded Clarksdale's Juke Joint Festival."

Stolle's Cat Head record label launched in 2005 with a Big George Brock album that immediately garnered a "Comeback of the Year" Blues Music Award nomination. Since then, Cat Head has earned 6 total nominations and most recently a BMA win for a joint film production called "M for Mississippi: A Road Trip through the Birthplace of the Blues" --  along with his co-producers at Broke & Hungry Records and Mudpuppy Recordings. That same film gained two more awards this week -- both the Critic's and Reader's Awards from Living Blues magazine. He and his co-producers also screened the film in Norway last weekend.

As the store celebrates seven years, it's fitting that Big George Brock is playing Hopson Commissary this Saturday night, and "M for Mississippi" is screening at Red's Lounge both Friday and Saturday afternoon. Cat Head, itself, also plans special events.

"At the store itself, we have some special free music as well," says Stolle. "Friday at 3pm we have La La, Saturday at noon we have Terry 'Harmonica' Bean, and Sunday we have the triannual Cat Head Mini Blues Fest. It's all free, so we hope folks will come by and say hello. We also have free copies of Living Blues magazine with every purchase from Friday through Sunday." One per customer while quantities last courtesy of Oxford-based Living Blues magazine, according to Stolle. Just in time for the store anniversary and the big Sunflower festival, Cat Head has stocked up on the blues favorites that fans from around the world have come to expect.

"At the end of the day, I still have to make a living," explains Stolle. "That said, I choose to stock the blues stuff I believe in. Not pop or rock-blues. Not cheesy touristy junk. Just what I like to call the 'real deal.' We've got blues CDs by all of the performers at this weekend's festival as well as plenty of Cat Head exclusives, including T-shirts, hats, posters, drink glasses."

The chalkboards at Cat Head also feature the weekend's music line-up at the clubs and juke joints as well as printouts available on the 'freebie table' up front.

Other blues work, Cat Head's Stolle is proud of, includes bookings for Ground Zero Blues Club, the "Cat Head Delta Blues Show" on WROX, his weekly call-ins to Bill Wax on XM Radio and the "Down in the Delta" column in Blues Revue magazine.

For more information on Cat Head and the week's blues events, go to www.cathead.biz or call the store at 662-624-5992.

"I want to thank the thousands of customers who have come through our door in the past seven years," says Stolle. "I truly appreciate it. Together, we really can keep the blues alive in the Mississippi Delta."

WAUKESHA BLUESFEST
Waukesha, WI – The entertainment line-up for Waukesha BluesFest, August 7th & 8th at Naga-Waukee Park in Delafield, Wisconsin features 14 national regional and local blues acts, an art show and exceptional food from local restaurants.

“Once again this year we are excited to present one of the most unique festival line-ups in Southeastern Wisconsin,” said Bob Mittnacht, who manages the entertainment for Waukesha BluesFest. “With Sonny Landreth, who tops the list of premier slide guitar players performing today and Gina Sicilia, Philadelphia's new critically acclaimed emerging blues/soul singer we have a great range of music to showcase,” explained Mittnacht. “When you hear Landreth’s one-of-a-kind style, it’s instantly recognizable, while Gina Sicilia, will impress you with her youthful and full-voiced traditional blues style reminiscent of the soul and passion of Etta James,” explained Mittnacht.

“We will contrast the well-known and much respected Chicago trombonist Big James and his band The Chicago Playboys with the guitar pyrotechnics of Greg Koch. Top this off with a generous sampling of regional talent, and you have a blues-based smorgasbord of music unmatched in area summer festivals,” said Mittnacht.

While blues fans enjoy great music at Waukesha BluesFest, they’ll also have the opportunity to view and purchase fine art from talented local artists. The Waukesha BluesFest will feature an Art Show offering a broad variety of affordable art, including photography, painting, pottery, fused glass, jewelry, and more. Most of the artists represented are from galleries and studios located in Delafield, Hartland, Milwaukee and downtown Waukesha.

BLUESMAN'S WORK HAS ROLE IN MOVIE

(PopMatters.com)LOS ANGELES - In blues circles, Otis Taylor is something of an outsider. The musician, whose music plays a prominent role in Michael Mann's new movie, "Public Enemies," has an iconoclastic vision for his music. Put it this way: When was the last time you heard blues played on a banjo?

Taylor's just-released "Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs" - his 10th album - also incorporates jazz, folk, rock, and African rhythms. Music historians may struggle to compartmentalize the Denver-based musician's oeuvre, but Taylor calls it "trance blues."

"People say, 'You can't categorize Otis,' " the 60-year-old said recently. "The Blues Foundation says it has no category for me. So, my album's never going to be nominated for blues albums. But it's OK, because I won the Michael Mann award."

Taylor clearly relishes the prize of exposure. "Ten Million Slaves," a neck-and-neck canter of banjo and electric guitar, is selling well on iTunes due to its placement in the trailers for "Public Enemies," a Johnny Depp biopic about Depression-era gangster John Dillinger.

But, most of all, Taylor is grateful for the experience of working with a director renowned for enhancing visuals with rock songs ever since he created TV's "Miami Vice."

Taylor is still a relative novice in the blues world. Just 15 years ago, he was an antiques dealer. A music career wasn't on Taylor's mind. After all, a previous foray into professional musicianship as a young man failed to yield a viable record deal. By 1977 he knew it was time to quit.

The turning point was a benefit gig for a local coffee house. The rapturous response to the show proved to be the nudge he needed to cut an album.

My wife said, 'There'll only be one record.' Now there's 10 records," he said, grinning.

A good review in Playboy magazine for Taylor's third album, "White African," made others sit up and take notice. In truth, Taylor's songs are hard to ignore. Over the course of successive albums he's written songs about the lynching of his great grandfather, the gunshot murder of his uncle, and his mother's drug bust for selling heroin. "Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs" includes a song in which the "other woman" in a marriage turns out to be the wife's lesbian lover. It's about his mother.

Taylor's parents were into bebop jazz; Taylor preferred rootsy fare. "My father didn't like folk, country, or blues because that had to do with suppressed blacks," said the songwriter. "He was intelligentsia. He didn't like country people, because they stayed in the South and he got out."

Nevertheless, Taylor gravitated toward the banjo. But when someone noticed Taylor's prowess and encouraged him to go South, Taylor started "freaking out." The South was hardly a hospitable environment for a black man in the 1960s, so Taylor started leaning more toward guitar and harmonica.

"Later, about 15 or 20 years ago, I discovered that banjo came from Africa, but I didn't know that when I was a kid," he said. Warming to his theme, Taylor laid out a detailed history lesson about how whites took over minstrel shows and, with their black face makeovers, employed banjos and watermelons as racially stereotypical props. Such Jim Crow-era performances may explain why African-Americans began to abandon the banjo. The instrument's original heritage was lost. "Until the '60s, the banjo was still linked with ignorant white country people - Appalachian hillbillies," Taylor said.

Taylor's revelation about the black roots of the instrument inspired him to unite blues luminaries such as Guy Davis, Corey Harris, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Keb' Mo' for the 2008 album, "Recapturing the Banjo." "I was just wanted to show that black people don't play the banjo like white people," Taylor said.

The record, which includes "Ten Million Slaves," was met with critical plaudits. But it also put pressure on Taylor to deliver a worthy follow-up.

"After the banjo album, I knew there was going to be a lull if I didn't watch out," said the songwriter. "I thought, 'If Otis Taylor does love songs, that'll get their attention, because I'm so dark.' "

Nevertheless, the songwriter challenged himself to write happy tunes. "Pentatonic Wars and Love Songs" boasts a number of romantic songs.

But "Dagger By My Side" is about a man who murders his mistress, and "Lost My Guitar" is a metaphoric lament about the tragic 1974 car-accident that killed Emma K. Walsh, the young daughter of Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh, in Boulder, Colo. Taylor is friends with the girl's mother.

Easygoing in person, Taylor is hardly an optimist. "You're either fighting to go up, or you're fighting to keep from going down," he said of his career.

"When you're unique, and there's only one of you, you're in a better position when things go bad because they can't go replace that. But they can go get 10 more of these Chicago [blues] guys. So, I'm hoping in the long run, I'll be stronger."
