Request an Invitation

Join us for a Saturday afternoon salon concert and champagne reception, gratefully acknowledging contributions to the Art Farmer Jazz Scholarship Fund. Named in honor of the legendary master musician and mentor, the scholarship fund provides merit-based financial assistance awards to promising young students of jazz.

"We're big fans of Foster Oden's piano trio," says the scholarship fund's founder, musician Dmitri Matheny. "They're true gentlemen of jazz, swinging with all the sophistication, soul, humor and grace of the 'old school.' And for the uninitiated, that's the best jazz school there is."

A Swinging Salon with the Foster Oden Trio kicks off a new series of Salons at the Maricopa Cabana, intimate concerts held in Matheny's Chandler, Arizona home.
12/14 ~ AZ BRASS TO FETE CHET
More Information

A legendary master of cool jazz whose movie star looks inspired the Hollywood image of actor James Dean, the late CHET BAKER perfected a relaxed, understated and melacholy style which catapulted him to the top of the jazz polls—as both a singer and a trumpeter—by the age of 23.

Modern day brass players Fred Forney, Dmitri Matheny and Dennis Monce join forces for this heartfelt tribute, celebrating Baker's 80th birthday anniversary with an evening dedicated to his storied life and inspiring music. The evening also features the talents of guitarist/vocalist Jeff Libman, bassist Thomas Williams and drummer John Lewis.

One of Arizona's most popular restaurants, Monti's La Casa Vieja is steeped in a tradition of Southwestern hospitality that dates back more than 130 years. Located in the actual adobe hacienda of Tempe's original pioneer, Monti's is an icon of Arizona history: the oldest continuously occupied structure in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
12/20 ~ ALL-STAR HOLIDAY JAZZ BASH
More Information

Jazz in AZ will stage the hippest holiday party in the Valley on Sunday, December 20th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, when the Dmitri Matheny Group featuring Charles McNeal plays Holiday Jazz at Kaz!

The family-friendly event at Kazimierz World Wine Bar in Scottsdale will feature an all-star line up of jazz luminaries: Dmitri Matheny [flugelhorn], Charles McNeal [saxophones], Nick Manson [piano], Thomas Williams [bass], and John Lewis [drums], plus surprise guests.

“I was born on Christmas Day, and I’ve always loved the holiday season,” Matheny says. “This show offers us the perfect opportunity to put our creative spin on favorite seasonal classics.”

Sharing front line duties with Matheny for Holiday Jazz at Kaz is Bay Area sax legend Charles McNeal. McNeal has earned the respect of his peers for his outstanding work as a soloist with Jon Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Roberta Flack, the Temptations and Boz Scaggs.

“Charles is one of the most exciting musicians you’ll ever hear performing live,” Matheny enthuses. “He brings a sense of urgency and soul to every note he plays.”

Admission to the public is $10 [FREE for those who become members of Jazz in AZ at the party]. JiA member rates apply. As a special holiday gift, all party-goers will receive a complimentary copy of Dmitri Matheny’s CD Santa’s Got a Brand New Bag, “a recommended acquisition for everyone’s Christmas jazz collection” [Los Angeles Times].

Kazimierz World Wine Bar, located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, is downtown Scottsdale's hidden jewel, offering live entertainment, signature cocktails, global small plates and over 3200 wines. Kaz is Arizona's only wine bar awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence annually. With comfortably plush sofas and chairs in vineyard colors, stone walls softened by candlelight, and wooden wine casks evoking the feel of a European wine cave, Kaz offers a relaxed, cozy atmosphere for celebrating the season with friends and family.

Come early for best seating.
10th Anniversary of Scholarship Fund
For More Information

Since 1999, the Art Farmer Jazz Scholarship Fund has provided merit-based financial assistance awards to promising young students of jazz.

Named for the legendary master musician, the scholarship fund was established by Dmitri Matheny upon his mentor's passing, and previously generated scholarships for students at the Young Musicians Program of the University of California, Berkeley.

On the occasion of the scholarship fund's 10th anniversary, the fund will now be managed by the 501(c)(3) organization Jazz in AZ, and will focus on youth in the Phoenix, Arizona area "where Art and his brother Addison grew up," Matheny explains.

Farmer, “the bebop master who defined the sound of the flugelhorn in modern jazz” [All Music Guide], was Matheny’s public champion and private mentor during the final ten years of his life. Generously sharing his wisdom, experience and influence, Farmer encouraged Matheny to concentrate on the flugelhorn exclusively, and under Farmer’s tutelage Matheny emerged as a promising new voice in jazz. “Art Farmer’s role in the early success of Dmitri Matheny cannot be overstated,” observed writer and historian Phil Elwood in 1998. “Without Art, there would be no Dmitri.”

Donations to the Art Farmer Jazz Scholarship Fund are appreciated in any amount, and are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.

NEW CD: MID-CENTURY MODERN
Official Discography

Dmitri Matheny is now at Clarke Rigsby's Tempest Recording studio, putting the finishing touches on JAZZMEN, his forthcoming ninth CD as a leader.

The program includes buoyant originals, a soaring jazz waltz, progressive jazz and hard bop classics, ethereal atmosphere pieces, and loads of intense bluesy improv. "We wanted this project to suggest a 'mid-century modern' vibe," Matheny says, "so we're bringing in the big guns: pianists Darrell Grant and Nick Manson, bassists Ruth Davies and Thomas Williams, drummers Dom Moio and John Lewis, and saxophonists Charles McNeal and Jerry Donato. All are serious and soulful players of the highest caliber."

JAZZMEN, scheduled for international release March 26, 2010, on the Papillon label, promises to be another exciting entry into Matheny's extensive discography.
