Menus and Stories for April 5-9, 2010

Oh HAPPY day!!!
We got the amazingly fabulous news this week that Henry's bone marrow transplant (round #2) WORKED!!!!!!!!

This sweet fellow, the child of two of our managers, was born with a less than stellar immune system.  now, thanks to a true miracle of modern science, he will finally have his own system that will protect him.

It will be a while still, but this family is now moving in the direction of these mountains.  Soon.  Soon. A most terrific rebirth in this season.

Queen Isabella
Here's a look at one of my two new Queens.  There is a dot of color on the queen's back so she is easier to find (put there by the people who reared her.)  I say a big thanks for that.

I visited the girls this past week on one of the sunny days.  All was good in both hives.  Found both queens (Isabella and Margherita) and observed the doings of the colonies.  It promises to be a good year for them.  Their new spot in my front yard makes them much more prominent in my life.  That's a good thing!

Simple, "Appalachian-grown" Supper
These Shepherd's pies, made with EastFork farm's lamb, were a big hit and were the Simple Supper offering the other day.  As the farms get going, we'll have more and more local food for you.

Our eggs, found in our breakfast burritos, morning quiche, and "Easy rider" Deviled Eggs, are all local.  Can't beat the taste and the purity of them.

Here are our dinners for the week.  Order by noon and we'll have your dinner ready to pick up by 3.  We are open until 8 now which makes it easy for you to dawdle if you like.  Feel free to stay right here with us if you like.  We'll reheat your meal and stay out of your way.

Mirror mugging
The giant mirror on the wall of The Garden Room is a great spot for makeup adjusting, hair primping, clothing observation, and plain old light reflecting.

The other day we had a group of girls from Hanger Hall School visit during one of their downtown walks.  I could not resist this snap.  Adults get very self-conscious.  Not so, these girls.  Love it!

It's  Hot Cross Bun day.  if you are lucky enough to be reading this note on Saturday morning, I'd say hurry over to snag these before they are gone.

A note from Laurey

April 3, 2010

What a wonderful week!

First off, we had the amazing news about my favorite child: Monsieur Henri. The son of Adam and Emily has been through so much (as have they). It has been a year of them finding out that something was wrong and finding out how to try to fix it and then trying, unsuccessfully, to fix it and then – TRA LA! – getting some good news. At last!!!

Though they were not supposed to know until yesterday, the doctors rushed the results of his DNA tests this past Monday and on Tuesday they found out that the cells growing in him are bone marrow cells from the donor. This is the news that they needed and that we have all been waiting for.

HOORAY!!!

Henry got to go home from the hospital that very day and, though he is still undergoing a lot of treatment and daily clinic visits, being home is a lot better than being in a hospital. Adam and Emily both sound tremendously relieved, happy, able to start to breathe. This is not what you think is going to happen when you have a child. But helping Henry is, of course, paramount. And it is finally on the way to working.

My yard is full of Springtime too. This morning was particularly beautiful. Birds are really here now and my wide open windows let in their songs. What a way to wake up! As soon as the light appears I can now see soft greens and a greening lawn and a soon-to-be full Weeping Cherry tree and an almost blastingly bright Forsythia hedge. A day or two should do it.

Tomorrow I’m dedicating to garden bed cleaning. Yesterday I cleaned my house, polishing glass and vacuuming and primping and airing out. It’s spring time and I have spring fever.

Things are work are pulsing too. Our windows here are clean too – and open! Why keep all this great air on the outside when our windows, new last year, can be cranked open to let in the breeze? Kris and Noel have been doing spring cleaning in our storage area too. We have a large area underneath the café that is filled with everything we need to create smooth parties, deliveries, gift baskets. They both love organizing (thankfully!) I get overwhelmed but they are doing a bang-up job. We might have to offer tours – their work is that impressive!

So – it is spring. Life is good! Henry is on the way back. No need to stop praying, but it’s very good to believe that the attention to him is working. Truly it is a time of rebirth. Yes.

Modeling the latest Spring colors...
Oh I have crested a previously unreachable peak: symmetry!  It is so much fun to work with a piece of hot glass that is on center.  I "got it" a couple of weeks ago and here are a few of the resulting pieces.  These are all part of a commission for The Power of the Purse luncheon in May, but I'll be making more in the coming weeks.
