A cozy dinner - right here
Oo-whee we have had a full and very good week.

Here's a snap of a tiny dinner we had - right here in the cafe - just last night.  8 people.  Nice menu.  Sweet time.

Kris cleared away almost all the tables and these friends had the place to themselves.  I love the flexibility of this room, our Garden Room (so named because it looks out on our Garden - which is in full bloom right now.)

We had both driven to a final site visit a couple of hours away but we came back, changed clothes, got in the spirit, and put this party together.

A bit bigger in scale
And then today we hopped back in the car(s) and went back to the spot two hours away and set up this much bigger party and the clouds cleared away just in time for 70 guests to have an old-fashioned, summertime "Dinner on the Grounds."  Three of us cooked, a bunch more served, a couple of folks did the dishes, and a lot of lovely food was served.

Setting up for the Wedding dinner
Last Saturday evening, as I mentioned in last Saturday's newsletter, we put together a big wedding in a gorgeous public garden near here.  Oh MY what an inspiration THAT place is!  My little home plot seems a weed-invaded mess in comparison.

Last week I was Grill Babe and had a good time flipping skewers for a few hours. There is something fun about being surrounded by smokey food, soaking wet from the heat and the air's moisture.  Very fun. Very.

Casseroles for the month

Plating the First Course
Here's a glimpse at me and Brendan putting together today's beginning: a layered Vegetable Pate.  Very colorful.  Quite lovely, in an early-summer sort of way.  The staff, on their way to collect the plates oohed and aahed.  That makes me smile.  I mean, if I can make THEM exclaim, I'm in fine shape!!

Lobster Risotto
Brendan made a gorgeous and delicious Lobster Risotto for today's feast.  Oh, we also had Rack of Lamb and Beef Tenderloin and Polenta and Sugar Snaps, and Sweet Potato Salad and a whole bunch of other things.

In the olden days, this sort of meal was brought by all the church ladies.  Today we provided it all.  Looked like the church ladies had a fine time, as did the bride and groom.  And so, not incidentally, did we!

The Shinola Troubadours of Possom Splendor
These are this week's guests for our Thursday comfort tunes.  I've been having so much fun bringing in these performers.  Take a look at the link below and drop in for a spell on Thursday.

Last week's simple supper was Martha's hand pies, Gallettes, she calls them.  De-LISH! 6-8 on Thursday.  The beer will be cold.  And so will the wine.

A note from Laurey
June 26, 2010

Uh oh. It is almost dark outside and I am just now getting to my newsletter. I was up and out of the house this morning at 6:30, off to the store and then the shop and then a drive and then a wedding and then the drive, reversed, and then to the shop and then home. It is 9 and I am tired!

We’ve had quite a good wedding season this year. And, busy as we have been, I’m just fine with a day or two of slow. I haven’t had much slow in awhile. That’s a fine thing, to be busy, especially during this “economic downturn,” but I don’t mind a few days of slow, slow, slow pace. It’ll be nice.

We get Part I of our new air conditioner this week – tomorrow, to be exact. It will take a few visits from the guys to make it run, but it’s nice to have the process started.

Emily and Adam and Henry are back home. I have not yet seen them, but it is nice to know they are back within reach. It has been a long time, a long haul for them. What a journey. And how nice to have their Part I nearly done.

I hope to get into my bee hives tomorrow. It is time to add some empty honey supers to the hives. It is time to check and see if hive # 1 has a queen yet. It is time to see if hive # 2 needs more room for more honey. And time to see if hive # 3 is ready for a second brood box. I might need to move some bees from Hive # 2 to # 3 to help it along. It’s now getting complicated. Hive # 4 probably is ready for more equipment. We’ll see.

This week I get to start putting our words into the framework of the new website. MY what a complicated process this has been. It may be done in a few weeks. We’ll see.

What else? I get a haircut on Tuesday. Pilates on Thursday. Meetings about Chefs Move to Schools on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and, um, maybe Thursday and Friday. Got some other meetings. Some menus to write. Some plans to make. My desk is a chaotic mess – greatly in need of attention. I have been coming in from parties and tossing things on my desk or on my chair or simply in my corner of the office. Emily will be back soon and I need to get things in order.

And then we get a little break for the 4th weekend. I think we’re going to make a special July 4th picnic. I’ll send out a note on Tuesday if we decide to. You’d get it on Saturday to take with you to the Fireworks. (You ARE going to go to the Fireworks, aren’t you???)

Okay – I’m going to call it a night. I’ll be in touch in the next couple of days about the 4th picnic. Until then – g’night.

My bottle border
Okey doke.  I finally remembered to bring my camera home to snap a look at my new bottle border for you.

Here's what you do:
Take a wine bottle.  Soak off the label.  Chunk up up some dirt.  Poke the bottle in.  Tap it with a rubber mallet if you like.  Repeat.

Done.
