DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO CATCH DELTA-RAISED BLUES LEGEND BIG GEORGE BROCK

BIG GEORGE BROCK HAS DONE A LOT IN 78 YEARS...

Big George was born in Grenada, Mississippi, but grew up just outside Clarksdale on Flower's Plantation where he picked cotton, drove a tractor, played blues and boxed (see photo).  In the early fifties, he started living most of the time in St. Louis, where he ultimately bought a house in 1960 or '61 (through his half-brother, ball player Lou Brock, by the way).  While staying in St. Louis in the early '50s, he fought just parolled, up-and-coming boxer Sonny Liston (yep, the guy who Cassius Clay would later fight) and WON in an amateur bout at the gym where both were training.  After some bad experiences, Brock left boxing to concentrate on blues, opening a series of blues clubs, the largest of which was the infamous Club Caravan where his second wife was horribly murdered one night.  Brock continued with occasional clubs after Caravan closed around 1970, but eventually, he settled on just playing the blues, not running clubs and such.  In-between gigs, Brock married 3 times and fathered 42 kids -- including mutiple sets of twins and triplets.  Since his acclaimed comeback album (appropriately named "Club Caravan") was released in 2005, Brock has toured the world, appeared on TV and in films, and recorded two follow-up CDs for the Cat Head label.  He and his magnificent Blues Bus will return to Hopson Commissary and Cat Head store on April 16 and 17, respectively, for this year's 8th annual Juke Joint Festival.  (Brock is related to two other past/present Juke Fest performers, by the way: the late Big Jack Johnson and the great Super Chikan.)  Don't miss your chance to see a true blues legend who has shared stage or studio with the likes of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Albert King, Watermelon Slim, Jimbo Mathus, Steven Seagal, Hubert Sumlin and many more.  He's changed his hair styles (see photo above) but never changed his 1950s hard blues style!

MR. TATER HEADSTONE DEDICATION AT CAT HEAD THIS SUNDAY AT NOON...

(PHOTO: movie-still by Damien Blaylock from "M for Mississippi".)

MR. TATER "THE MUSIC MAKER" HEADSTONE DEDICATION:

According to Mr. Tater's good friend Mary Jane Haley, the wonderful new headstone -- that Shonda Warner (Miss Del's General Store) has generously funded, by the way (thanks!) -- will arrived out front of the Cat Head store later today (Friday), so that visiting Tater fans can view it during the festival.  Then, Sunday (April 17th) during the annual Cat Head Mini Blues Fest -- around 12 noon -- there will be a brief dedication.  The headstone will be placed at the cemetery early this coming week.  Somehow, I knew that Tater wasn't going to miss a Juke Joint Festival.  RIP.

ALSO, "SUPERBAD STRING BAND" SET TO RAISE FUNDS FOR FUTURE WALK OF FAME MARKER:

Drop by the Miss Del's General Store Stage during Juke Joint Festival at noon on Saturday and check out the Superbad String Band.  Buy a Tater CD from them or toss something in the tip bucket, and it will go towards a future Mr. Tater Walk of Fame marker.  For more information about the CD, the fundraiser set or the special donation account at Regions Bank, please email Robin Lane at blues4dirt@yahoo.com.

WELCOME TO THE "JUKE JOINT FESTIVAL EDITION" OF THE CAT HEAD UPDATE FROM CLARKSDALE, MISSISSIPPI...

(PHOTO: Tutwiler, MS's Cristen Barnard pained this year's official T-shirt and poster artwork.  Thanks, Cristen, for your generous support of Juke Joint Festival; we truly appreciate it.)

Hi y'all!  Welcome to another sporadic edition of the infamous CAT HEAD UPDATE: The Mississippi Blues Newsletter -- "all the blues that's fit to print."

NOTE: sorry... this is an abbreviated version of the usual newsletter... just no time to get everything in!

CAT HEAD'S BEEN BUSY SINCE LAST NEWSLETTER

Plans for Juke Joint Festival, various speaking engagements (Mississippi Economic Council, Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club, etc.), prep for release of "Hidden History of Mississippi Blues" book and... just trying to keep a record store alive during the tough non-tourist winter months (and the age of the "free" MP3 downloads and built-in CD burners) have kept Mr. Cat Head waaayyy tied up lately.  Thanks for everyone's continued patience as the Cat Head Mission continues... "to organize and promote Mississippi blues from within."

JUKE JOINT FESTIVAL WEEK 2011 HAS ARRIVED...

Co-organizers Nan Hughes and Goldie Hirsberg (in addition to yours truly) of the non-profit Clarksdale Downtown Development Association have spent thousands of hours pounding the pavement, working the web and manning the phone in an effort to make this year's fest is the biggest and best yet.  Thanks to Nan, Goldie, all of our event volunteers, our musical acts and visiting tourists for making this weekend a reality once again.  Our 8th annual, Juke Joint Festival is this Saturday, April 16th; the official daytime events are free; the nighttime juke joint caravan is still (8 years into it) a mere $10!  In addition to monkeys riding dogs, racing pigs, dozens of street vendors (food, arts & crafts, tourism info and much more), etc... we will offer y'all "100 blues acts for 100 years" -- in honor of the Robert Johnson Centennial.  ("100!"  That's not a typo.  We'll do it via 14 mini and reg daytime stages.  18 nighttime venues with 19 stages and over 20 acts.  The $10 wristband gets you into all the night venues plus rides on the 4 bus shuttles and train shuttle.)  This year's festival is also a tribute to the past year's fallen Delta blues heroes -- including Mr. Tater, Big Jack Johnson, Billy Hardin and Pinetop Perkins.  Most of the music line-up is below, later in this e-newsletter.  The festival schedule is much too large for this email, so please view it at www.jukejointfestival.com with some additional listings at www.cathead.biz (Live Music page).  The schedule is admittedly HUGE and overwhelming, but Nan has put together an extremely helpful (and thick!) event program, so just pick one up at Cat Head or the fest itself... and then start enjoying.  Oh yeah, there are plenty of cool "Related Events" from Thursday evening through Sunday night; some are free; some have reasonable cover charges; all are excellent.

THREE PIECES OF ADVICE:

1.  For accommodations info, please go to http://www.cathead.biz/guide.html.  Rooms have opened up recently at Comfort Inn, Executive Inn and the Uptown Inn among others; book what you can, and get on some waiting lists if the room ya got ain't the one you really want!  Or, RV camp at the Expo Center.

2.  Got a tent, a pop-up camper or small trailer?  John "Riverman" Ruskey has set up some cool camping facilities DOWNTOWN by the scenic Sunflower River -- adjacent to the festival grounds.  You can camp outside or (for tents only) inside the Riverman's big Quapaw Canoe Co building at Third and Sunflower Ave.  Contact him at 662-902-7841 for details, but basically, the sites have electricity... and there are bathrooms inside the building and an outdoor show.  Thanks John and friends for pulling that option together!

3.  Book your rooms now for NEXT year's fest -- April 14, 2012.

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION... NEW BOOK NOW AVAILABLE.

"Hidden History of Mississippi Blues" (The History Press) may only be a 130-page paperback, but I spent literally hundreds of (mostly early morning and late night) hours writing the editorial content while photographer Lou Bopp spent several weeks (and countless tanks of gas) shooting the images.  Like Prego spaghetti sauce used to brag, "It's in there."  Not everything, but a lot of (hopefully) fascinating "hidden history" of this universally influential music that came from the Magnolia State.  In the book, you will find answers to some of the most common questions I receive weekly at my Cat Head store, including: "Why did you move to Mississippi?"  (I get that one or variations on it... A LOT.)  "Where is the Crossroads?"  "What is a juke joint?"  "Is the blues dying?"  "Why did so many bluesmen come from Mississippi?"  You get the idea.  The book is written to be readable; it's for newbies and seasoned blues fans alike; it is not an academic dissertation (no offense meant), so it is hopefully very accessible; if we've done our job, then readers will find it a fast, fun journey through Mississippi blues past, present, and future; if we've done our job, readers will also find it an open invitation to visit (to paraphrase Alan Lomax) The Land Where Blues Began... while it is still living and breathing.  After all, even today, you can still step back into blues history and breathe in the deep blues, juke joint culture of the Delta, firsthand... even in the second decade of the 21st Century.  We're holding a BOOK SIGNING AND PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION opening this Friday, April 15th at 3pm at my Cat Head store.  I'll be joined by Lou Bopp (photos) and Jeff Konkel ('Forward').  Lou will also have his amazing prints for sale -- with a percentage of the proceeds benefiting the featured artist shown.  If you can't make it, please call the store at 662-624-5992 by April 14th to charge your copy of "Hidden History of Mississippi Blues" by phone, and we'll all three sign it on Friday; then, we'll mail 'em out on Monday; please let us know if you want it personalized.  (Also, if you buy the book after that, I'll still be happy to personalize, of course.  And... if you buy/bought yours via The History Press at www.historypress.net or somewhere else, just send me a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and I'll mail you back a signed book plate (sticker) to insert in your copy.  Thanks so much.  Hope y'all enjoy the book, Roger Stolle @ Cat Head in Clarksdale.

JUKE JOINT FESTIVAL WEEKEND'S "OFFICIAL KICK-OFF" AT DELTA CINEMA WAS LAST NIGHT...

OFFICIAL JUKE JOINT FESTIVAL KICK-OFF A SUCCESS!  A packed lobby and main theater at Delta Cinema (11 Third St.) last night enjoyed a poster signing with artist Cristen Barnard, lobby music by Sean "Bad" Apple, and an awesome two-set show by the North Mississippi String Band featuring Grammy Winners Jimbo Mathus and Alvin "Youngblood" Hart.  The sound and feel were fantastic.  Attendees enjoyed acoustic renditions of archaic blues songs, country numbers, traditional tunes... in the style of the South Memphis String Band.  THANKS to Clarksdale Revitalization Inc for making that a totally free music event and and ideal kick-off to Juke Fest.  Also, thanks to Jimbo for pulling together the band and bringin' the show to Cdale.  Finally, thanks to cinema owner Bruce Ellis and his lovely family for hosting the event.  (OF SPECIAL NOTE:  Man... I didn't get a regular dinner last night, so I had one of the cinema's famed hotdogs.  It was incredible!  Served piping hot with all kinds of condiment crap on top.  Highly recommended.  The popcorn's good too.)
