DANA FUCHS : : LOVE TO BEG
Seems the future holds a lot of mystery & excitement for me. Last year, I saw so much of the world, traveling far and wide to play music and now I've just signed my first record deal with Ruf Records to release my 2nd studio album "Love to Beg". I can't wait for the world to hear the new CD and I can't wait to bring it to life onstage with my incredible band.

I'm very proud of our new record. Together with my music partner Jon Diamond, we faced the challenge of trying to capture the live energy we're known for, while breaking out of that "on stage" comfort zone to experiment with the boundless potential that a studio environment, amazing musicians and a great engineer provides. Self-producing this body of work together was a daunting prospect, but it was also incredibly liberating - AND fun!

2011 L.A. MUSIC AWARDS NOMINEE RON TANSKI STARTS WEEKLY RESIDENCY@CLUB 705

MUMBAI: Contemporary blues pianist-vocalist Ron Tanski kicks off a month-long residency at Club 705, 705 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach, Thursday, May 12, starting, also performing Thursday, May 19; Thursday, May 26; and Friday, June 3.

The Torrance-based musician  - who credits legendary keyboardist Jerry Lee Lewis as a main influence -  has been busy of late, recently performing with guitarist Randy Scott at the Simi Valley Blues Festival while getting ready to be one of the Main Stage headliners at the Real Blues Festival Of Orange County 2 on Sunday, May 15. Showing his versatility, Tanski performed at the renowned Coachella Music & Arts Festival in 2009 for a completely different crowd than the blues people he generally plays for.

Ron has been nominated in the "Best Blues, Roots or Americana" category for the 21st Annual (2011) Los Angeles Music Awards, taking place Thursday, November 10 at The Avalon in Hollywood. Past nominees include pop stars The Black Eyed Peas, rock singer Gwen Stefani, and  blues guitar ace Walter Trout, among others.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) was an American blues  singer and musician. His landmark recordings from 1936–1937 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that have influenced later generations of musicians. Johnson's shadowy, poorly documented life and death at age 27 have given rise to much legend, including a Faustian  myth. As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson enjoyed little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime.

FESTIVAL SET TO BE A THREE-DAY EXTRAVAGANZA

ARBROATH will be the blues centre of Scotland during the last weekend in August when some 30 bands will take part in the seventh Bell Rock Blues Festival.

And for the first time, the festival will extend over three days. It will run on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 26, 27 and 28.

Participating venues are the Anchor Bar, Bowlers, Burns Bar, Coast, Commercial Inn, Fisherman’s Inn, Foundry Bar, Lorne Bar, Millgate Bar, Pageant Bar, St Thomas Bar, Station Bar and West Port Bar.

Despite the recession the organisers have decided that there will be no admission charges, so music lovers will be able to attend at any of the 13 venues without having to pay an entry fee.

Organiser Sandra Nicoll revealed that the Bell Rock Blues Festival has gained worldwide acclaim. “We have had requests from bands in Italy, France, Spain, Finland and the United States asking if they can take part, but unfortunately, we do not have the money to bring them over.

“However, we have two new venues this year, the Fisherman’s Inn and the West Port Bar, so we are able to spread our wings a little.

“And this year it will not be just blues music on offer, as we have introduced an element of different styles to suit everyone.”

TASHA TAYLOR:

Johnnie Taylor’s daughter, all grown up, joins Elwood to talk about her life on the road as an honorary Blues Brother, and her very D-I-Y CD, Taylor Made. She produced it, wrote most of the songs, sang them, and put the album out on her own label. It is a fine compilation of sweet soul music, and will be played, along with music from her Dad, and some of her contemporary soul sisters: Candye Kane, Shemekia Copeland, and Sharon Jones. Aretha Franklin will be played as well. Then old blues gets a new beat from Dutch re-mixologist Mix & Dorp. Here on the website this week, a chance for you to win the latest CDs from blues rocker Kristin Thien, and Philadelphia’s own Gina Sicilia.
