In Blackwater Woods by Mary Oliver
Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars
of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,
the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders
of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is
nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned
in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side
is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go. |

Dear friends,
This particular Memorial Day is especially poignant
for my family. Over Mother's Day weekend, my husband's mother experienced a serious stroke. She took her last breath the following Sunday. During the week in between, her family held a near constant vigil, sharing our love for her. It was a precious time. Jane would have been 88 on May 31st. We like to think that she had a peaceful passing.
I got to thinking about how death and dying, as personal and universal that it is, is a topic that most of us probably don't deal with until we have to, often with little or no preparation. So I googled "death and dying buddist view" and found this wonderful article that describes that process of consciousness leaving the body. I personally found it helpful and comforting. Click here to read it.
To live in this world
you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it
against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.
Blessings to you and your loved ones this Memorial Day.
