Janet Oppenheimer’s Triathlon experience

Parents- We're here for you!

Janet Oppenheimer’s Triathlon experience

By Janet Oppenheimer

This past  Mother’s Day I accomplished something I’ve always wanted to do – a triathlon. I am a fairly confident runner and biker, but the swim seemed like an impossible task- and then doing all three together?   A girlfriend from Beech Mountain told me she had entered  the Danskin Triathlon in Orlando Florida ,and it got me thinking that I had always wanted to do this, so why not now? It was held at Disney World --an all-women’s event with about 1500  entrants for the ½ mile open water swim, 12 mile bike and 5K run. The majority of my training I did at the Y—the pool downtown exclusively with my friend Cindy, and the treadmill and bike at Woodfin or downtown. The two times I trained for all 3 distances (swim, bike ,run) together, was at  downtown Y. Unfortunately I came down sick about 10 days prior to the trip to Orlando and was unable to do any exercise for that many days ahead, but I pressed thru my anxiety about the swim and not feeling 100% and  finished in the top third in my age group (60-65) The best part was having my husband Peter with me that weekend along with my daughter, son in law and two grandkids who drove up from South  Florida to join us.  My “Go Grandma- You Can Do It ” signs were proudly displayed for motivation in the transition area.  I learned a lot about myself during the experience—how to move through anxiety (panic may be a better word) deal with the fear of trying something rather crazy and outside my comfort level, and come out a winner on the other side!

Sun Salutations

With the sun rising early in the sky these days, there's no better way to greet a new day and get the body moving! Try this full body, gentle stretching sequence for flexibility and strength.
