The Weekly Newsletter for August 1-5, 2011

Bee Hives in the sun
Have you seen those "hipstamatic" pictures?  (You have to have an iphone.)

I can't get enough of my beehives.  They are like my little children and I stare and stare, watching as they go about their foraging, orienting, grooming, and living.

And I also love the look of these photos.

It's never too soon for Baseball!
Pete, one of the "shopsters" and his wife Cassie just had a little baby, "Stone."  For her gift to him, in honor of the new baby, Cassie gave Pete a night at the ball field.  Stone got to go too.

Oh - Pete plays on a local baseball league with Jon and Brendan (two others of our crew.)  They came in FIRST in the league this summer. Big improvement from last year when they were last.  Way to go, guys!

Cupcakes!!!
Here's Barbara with a look at a plate of yums.  She's our Tuesday baking gal and you can bet there'll be platters of cupcakes for your delectation when she's at the helm.  Marty makes 'em too.  A day without cupcakes is, well, I don't know.  I'm just glad we have 'em - the cupcakes AND Marty and Barbara.

A note from Laurey
August 1, 2011

Oowee! It has been a week. You might gather that by seeing that it is Monday and I am just doing the newsletter. Suffice it to say that I am VERY glad that it is THIS week, not LAST week. The good thing about time is that it does march on and things that are hard can sometimes, after a bit, get easier.

Thank heavens for that, I say.

One fun part of last week happened on Monday. I had my 4th treatment in the morning and headed home after it was done. I generally just go home and sleep afterwards. But late in the afternoon that day I got a taste for a vanilla milkshake. Not really feeling up to driving, I sent out a note via Facebook asking if anyone would like to bring me a vanilla milkshake and some watermelon. Now sometimes the response on Facebook is instantaneous, but this time no one responded, so I sent out text messages to a few different friends. Four people responded immediately, all saying “I’m on my way!”

Oh no!

I tried calling or texting them back but by the time I reached them, they all WERE on the way, all had purchased milkshakes or watermelon and all were all almost at my house. YIKES!

And yes, they all showed up with their gifts. Nothing to be done but to have an impromptu party, right? We gathered around my kitchen table, tasting the samples. We actually had 6 to try, as two people had brought 2 each. Tye, the pup got to indulge too, since one friend tripped on my steps and spilled half of hers. Lucky puppy!

One little detail is that I really cannot eat cold things right now (I know – you’re saying “well why did you ask for MILKSHAKES?”) All I can say is, that’s what I was craving. One of the milkshake messengers suggested warming one up, which she did, in a pot on my stove. Of course it melted and turned into hot vanilla (like hot chocolate) and it was very good. Silly – and good.

By the time everyone left I had received a number of offers for additional shakes from the Facebook posting. If all of them had shown up we’d have had QUITE the sampling.

Other than that, things last week were okay. I’m glad it’s THIS week. Treatment weeks are no fun. Non treatment weeks are much better. Much.

In the meantime, things at work are great. The food is fresh and delicious and plentiful. Go team!

I’ll be in touch next week.

My video
One of the videos I did for The National Honey Board this winter has recently been edited and made viewable. I look a little stiff at the beginning but it gets better.

Those tv folks make it all look very easy!
