Candye Kane : : Sister Vagabond
On her latest release, "Sister Vagabond," Candye Kane once again delivers her heart on a platter. Kane presents a more mature and swinging collection of scorching blues and soul originals, searing with the young Laura Chavez's impressive guitar work. Kane takes us on a journey thru love, heartbreak, rejection and personal empowerment, colored in swampy and soulful earth tones that bring a new twist to old favorites (Brenda Lee's Sweet Nothings) and explore spookier and darker territory (Walkin' Talkin' Haunted House). Laura's guitar work stands out on these performances demonstrating maturity beyond her years. Kane and Chavez are a powerhouse duo to reckon with, exhibiting feminist strength and power in bucketfuls.
King King featuring Alan Nimmo : : Take My Hand
King King's debut album. A fresh, powerful new angle on blues rock ....as infectious as it is accomplished; swaggering from Stones-tinged blues rock through throbbing funk to reflective ballad and back.

Ever present are Alan Nimmo’s impassioned vocals and intricate guitar work, cohort Lindsay Coulson’s punchy bass, and the made-to-make-you-grin keyboard/piano work of Bennett Holland and Dale Storr. Craig Blundell and Wayne Proctor offer selfless vigour and expertise on drums, whilst Jacquie Williams joins the boys to bring gutsy, soulful backing vocals to several tracks. Intelligent and compelling,Take My Hand overflows with unexpected gems and reaches just the right balance of refinement and juke joint clout.

Take My Hand is released on Manhaton Records Hatman 2026

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BLUES FESTIVAL IS NO LONGER A SECRET
CAROLYN WONDERLAND BY DAVE ROCCO

The Northern California Blues Festival took place in Auburn, California, this past weekend. This festival has seen a variety of venues over several years, but current promoter Jason Haxton planted the show in Auburn Regional Park two years ago, and its sure has found a great home. The venue is roomy, with lots of lawn and ample shade under large oaks.

DANIEL CASTRO AND JEFF WATSON BY DAVE ROCCA

This two day festival (we attended on Saturday, but it kicks off on Friday evening) has become a wonderful blend of great music, food, and kids activities. A stellar lineup of blues includes appearances by the Soulshakers, Jeff Watson Band with special guests Daniel Castro and Terry Hiatt, the Bay Area Caravan of Allstars, the Dennis Jones Band, Carolyn Wonderland, and Kenny Neal and Family. Musical variety ranged from straight ahead blues to blues-rock to Louisiana swamp blues. In addition, Population 5, a young rock band, opened. There was a little something for everyone, and when it came time for a little stretch, there were plenty of other options available, too. Vendors sold BBQ, fried catfish, gourmet sandwiches, wraps, and assorted desserts, as well a variety of merchandise, and there was even a “Kid’s Zone,” complete with inflatable water rides.

DENNIS JONES BY DAVE ROCCA

The Northern California Blues Festival is rapidly growing into a “must see” event each summer.

PINETOP PERKINS FOUNDATION EXPANDS THE YOUTH WORKSHOP SERIES FOR 2012
Building off the great success of the first two years, The Pinetop Perkins Foundation plans to expand their workshop offerings next year to include a harmonica master class, along with the piano and guitar workshops. The overall goal of the workshops is to preserve Pinetop's legacy by bringing support and encouragement to young musicians at the beginning of their careers.

The 2012 Workshops will be held from June 13 to 15 at the Shack Up Inn and Hopson's Commissary in Clarksdale, Mississippi.   This will be followed by a performance and jam at the world famous Ground Zero blues club in Clarksdale. While the workshops will continue to be available to both "the young and the young at heart," scholarships will be available to youth ages 12-21 only.

The harmonica workshop will be led by Gary Allegretto. Winner of the 2011 Keeping the Blues Alive award for Blues Education from The Blues Foundation, Allegretto has decades of experience performing, recording and especially teaching harmonica to youth around the world. Since 1985, through his nonprofit organization Harmonikids, he has provided music therapy and harmonicas to many thousands of children around the world with a wide range of physical, emotional, and/or economic disadvantages.

ROBERT CRAY BAND REPLACES AILING GREGG ALLMAN
Hunter, NY - Bluestock is excited to announce the addition of the Robert Cray Band to the festival’s inaugural lineup, following the cancellation of the upcoming Gregg Allman tour.

5-time Grammy Award winner and Blues Hall of Fame member, Robert Cray, will bring his own band The Robert Cray Band to the Mountain.  Cray has recorded and shared the stage with the best of the best in the blues world, including Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker and Bluestock’s Sunday night headliner, Buddy Guy, and has sold out venues both small and large with his band.

Upon his doctor's orders, Gregg Allman is unfortunately being forced to cancel his August 26 through September 15 concert dates due to an upper respiratory condition. Treatment is going to involve several days of hospitalization and 4 - 6 weeks of bed rest at home. Allman continues to recover from his successful liver transplant and expects to return to touring in support of his highly acclaimed "Low Country Blues" album in the late fall.

Bluestock’s inaugural lineup also includes Buddy Guy, Elvin Bishop, Tommy Castro & The LRBR (featuring Joe Louis Walker, Deanna Bogart and Rick Estrin), Shemekia Copeland, Tab Benoit, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Shakura S’Aida, Curtis Salgado, Zac Harmon, Bob Margolin & Matt Hill, The Reba Russell Band, Shakura S'Aida, Mitch Woods & Billy Gibson, Moreland & Arbuckle, The Alexis P Suter Band, Trampled Under Foot, Bruce Katz, Albert Cummings, Ty Curtis, Port City Prophets and 2011 International Blues Challenge winner, the Lionel Young Band.

Bluestock will be held at world renowned Hunter Mountain Ski Resort, the home of numerous festivals including Mountain Jam and easily accessible from all over the Northeast. The site is known for its bucolic beauty, natural amphitheater and stage site lines, indoor facilities and delicious gourmet food and beer options. On-site accommodations include camping, condos, cabins and RVs.
Produced by Radio Woodstock and Steve and Jeff Simon Presents, Bluestock 2011 will be a 3-day event with music starting on Friday evening August 26th and ending early Sunday evening August 28th. Weekend tickets and single day Saturday and Sunday tickets are be available at Bluestock.com <http://www.Bluestock.com> . Friday’s performances will be reserved for full-weekend ticket holders only.

CHUCK BERRY IS SIMPLY STATUESQUE

UNIVERSITY CITY, MO (AP) — The image is timeless Americana: Chuck Berry hunched over, ready to launch into his famous Duck Walk, picking his Gibson guitar and wailing a song.

It's the image captured in the statue of the man considered by many to be the father of rock and roll, dedicated Friday in the University City Loop area of suburban St. Louis.

Berry, now 84, still performs monthly at Blueberry Hill, a club and restaurant across the street from the new statue. He spoke only briefly at the dedication ceremony on a sweltering day as hundreds paid tribute to the St. Louis native.

CANDYE KANE "SISTER VAGABOND"

Featuring Laura Chavez and special guests
James Harman, Nathan James, and many more!

"A Blues Diva of the 20th century who can liven up any party without shedding a stitch." – People Magazine

"This tough cookie wails with a rousing confidence, affirmation of identity, the courage of her convictions and wisdom beyond her years." - Downbeat Magazine

"Laura Chavez is not just a rising star. She's already arrived." - Vintage Guitar

"A voice that is a natural wonder – like the Grand Canyon." – The Washington Post

Candye Kane has been called a survivor, a superhero and the toughest girl alive. They are apt descriptions of the jump blues singer, songwriter and mother of two from East Los Angeles who has earned this moniker the hard way. Nominated for five National Blues Foundation Awards including the 2011 Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year, winner of ten San Diego Music Awards, starring in a sold out stage play about her life, and beating down pancreatic cancer in the last two years, Kane is one tough cookie. She has performed worldwide for presidents and movie stars, but her path to success was not always glamorous or easy.
