FINAL LINE-UP CONFIRMED AND TICKETS STILL AVAILABLE FOR DOHENY DAYS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
Photos: L to R
Ben Harper, Ziggy Marley, Black Uhuru, Katchafire

After seven years adrift, the DOHENY DAYS Music Festival returns to the whitewashed sandy beaches of South Orange County on September 10 & 11, 2011. During its initial eight-year run, Doheny Days received acclaim for the unique combination of its breathtaking venue, eclectic music lineup, and eco-friendly partners.

Headlining the 2011 festival on Saturday, September 10, will be multiple-Grammy Award winning guitarist and singer, BEN HARPER, who is known for his fusion of rock, reggae and roots music. This will be Harper’s exclusive Southern California concert in support of his newest release, Give Till It’s Gone. Sacramento based, CAKE will headline on Sunday, September 11. Cake produced their latest album Showroom of Compassion (released in January 2011) and recorded it in their own solar-powered studio in Sacramento. The album was preceded by its first single, "Sick of You", hitting number 4 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. The album itself opened at number 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums.

Also appearing at Doheny Days will be Weezer, Ziggy Marley, G Love & Special Sauce, Neon Trees, Common Sense, Donavon Frankenreiter, Katchafire, JJ Grey & Mofro, Black Uhuru, Orgone,  and many other great acts. The festival will feature three stages of roots, rock, reggae and funk music with a total of 25 performances during the weekend.

Doheny Days is produced by Omega Events, which has successfully operated 25 festivals at Doheny State Beach, including 8 years of Doheny Days (1997-2004) and fourteen consecutive years of the internationally recognized Doheny Blues Festival. “For years, fans of Doheny Days have been awaiting its return and we felt it was time to deliver,” says Rich Sherman, President of Omega Events. “I can’t tell you how many emails and phone calls I’ve received over the years from people asking about the festival.” The excitement and love for Doheny Days never faded, inspiring the producers of the event to re-launch their beloved beach festival.

Mick Jagger has teamed up with Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart, soul singer Joss Stone, Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack composer A.R.Rahman and reggae star Damian Marley to form a band cooperative project called SuperHeavy. This diverse and eclectic line up who share eleven Grammy Awards between them, have been recording together in various studios around the world, with the majority of the tracks on the project laid down over three weeks in Los Angeles earlier this year. The album will be unveiled in September and tracks include the first single 'Miracle Worker', plus 'One Day One Night', 'Energy', 'Unbelievable,' 'SuperHeavy,' I Can't Take It No More,' 'You're Never Gonna Change' and 'I Don't Mind.'

It's little wonder that Stewart refers to SuperHeavy as, "A mad alchemist type experiment". Fusing the talents of one of the greatest front-men of all time, a two time Academy award winning Indian composer, a soul vocal prodigy, a three time Grammy winning reggae star, and one of the most sought after producers in the world, you would expect the explosive results to defy categorisation.

SuperHeavy came together after Jagger and Stewart considered what a band comprising of musicians from different genres would sound like. Jagger explains, "Dave really wanted to make a record with a different group of musicians, in other words, with different backgrounds of music. Instead of everyone being a rock musician, or basically a blues musician, or some other genre, he wanted to get as many genres together that would fit. I said it sounds like a good idea, I never thought it would actually happen."

Despite their disparate backgrounds, they instantly connected and hit the ground running, writing twenty-two songs in the first six days. Stone was thrilled with the results, "That's what you need, all these opinionated people who have been brilliant in their own field, shove them together and see what comes out. It's really unexpected, it's mind blowing" she enthuses. Similarly enthused was Rahman, "The first day I was in a daze thinking, 'What am I doing? What's my role?' and then slowly we started writing with each other, and it was great. It took me way back to my high school days when I was playing in a rock band, but this one was a real one!" Jagger says of the writing process, "We ran the gamut of all our different styles mixed up, so we got Joss singing, Damian doing toasting, and me singing different styles."

However, despite the free flow of creative juices and the easy rapport they established, getting the band together in one place became very difficult, as Stewart explains, "It's the most complicated record ever made. Imagine, some of it's recorded in LA, some of it's recorded in the South of France, some of it's recorded off the coast of Cyprus, some of it's recorded in Turkey, some of it's recorded in Miami, some of it's recorded in the Caribbean, and some of it's recorded in Chennai, in India."

The project needed a name. Marley had been riffing the term "SuperHeavy", inspired by Muhammad Ali being the super heavy weight champion of the world and the phrase became the band's catchphrase, "It was Mick who said, 'Why don't we call it SuperHeavy?", recalls Stewart, "We all thought about it for ages and then it sort of stuck."

SuperHeavy is a new and spontaneous way of working for all the collaborators as Jagger explains, "I said to Dave, normally [with the Stones] we'd always have written songs before we go into the studio, but the jam sessions resulted in some great work believes Stone, "It felt better when we were just jamming, that way we made it up as we went along and it was easy."

Back to that alchemical experiment, Jagger, Stewart, Marley, Rahman and Stone appear to have created a new genre. It's a new kind of music, it's a new genre, one that cannot be placed" says Stone. Yet, Jagger is keen to point out the music is accessible, "It's very approachable. If you're a Rolling Stones fan there's definitely stuff you can relate to. Other stuff that you can't relate to so much, maybe if you listen you'll enjoy it."

As far as the future of SuperHeavy goes, "We haven't planned to do a tour or anything, but if people really like it maybe we will. We'd love to get out and play some of it live," says Jagger humbly. "As soon as we started playing together in the studio it gelled, and all these different styles didn't seem to be a problem to make them fit together... I hope people will like it...."

REGGAE’S NEW BREAKOUT ARTIST – THE GREEN ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM AND EXTENSIVE US TOUR
FULL LENGTH ALBUM WAYS & MEANS IS OUT OCTOBER 25th ON EASY STAR RECORDS

In less than a year the scene-shaking reggae band The Green has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting new Reggae artists from the US.  Both critics and fans quickly took hold of their youth-infused modern roots reggae sound.  Their self-titled debut album was named “Best Reggae Album” of 2010 by iTunes and hit Billboard’s 2010 Year-End Reggae Chart by selling over 20,000 copies and counting.

The band is following up with their sophomore album entitled Ways & Means, set to be released on October 25th on one of the leading reggae labels – Easy Star Records.  The label is home to some of the most accomplished and progressive reggae artists, including the Easy Star All-Stars, John Brown’s Body, Cas Haley, The Black Seeds, Ticklah, Tommy T, The Meditations, and more.

The Green consists of singer Caleb Keolanui, singer-guitarist JP Kennedy, singer-keyboardist Ikaika Antone, and singer-guitarist Zion Thompson. The four members of The Green take pride in the pop-burnished roots reggae style they’ve cooked up—edgy enough to make tastemakers sit up and take notice, yet accessible to all ages.  Four distinct voices, four sharp songwriting talents, masterful musicianship, and monster grooves add up to one exceptional band with an unforgettable sound.

LOS ANGELES - AFRICA RELIEF CONCERT ON SEPT. 17TH
DATE:  SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 17th
WHERE:  THE JOINT, 8771 Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, CA
CONTACT:  Junor Francis

EVENT:
SOMALIA, OUR NEIGHBOR
29000 Somali kids have died in last 90 days
Drought crisis in Somalia
Deepening Crisis in Somalia
Somalia crisis one of 'largest in decades'

"These are but a few of the achingly and profoundly sad headlines that we see on television and in newspapers on a daily basis. However, while we may not be able to actually provide a viable alternative to counteract the death and starvation taking place in Somalia, I thought perhaps we can use the proven tactic of putting together a concert to raise some degree of awareness and some money for the most effective charities at work in the region."  This is the focus of Junor Francis, organizer and host of this community-uniting event.

Junor Francis is a proud son of Jamaica and tireless promoter of that nation's greatest export - reggae music - via his weekly broadcast, "The Reggae Show" on KXLU 88.9FM and kxlu.com.

Performing that night are six well known ska, rock steady and reggae bands plus as DJ the host of KPFK's long-running reggae show, "Reggae Central," Chuck Foster.

Roots Collective, LaDee Dred & The World Beat Reggae Band, Arise Roots, Ottly Mercer, DA Rebel Lionz, Sure Shot Rockers

We would like to offer the bands ($150.00) each to defray their transportation cost. After we clear all our expenses, we would gladly donate the remainder of the money to a charity organization that is doing work in Somalia. Needless to say it is a well known fact that many of the organizations doing charity work are notorious for not delivering on their promises, we will do our uttermost best to choose the most outstanding of the lot.  (A list of our preferred charities can be found below.)

So, the plan is unfolding.  The stage is nearly set.  With the friendly, rocking neighborhood Joint as the location, six of our best local bands as the entertainment, assembled to ease the tribulations of Somali people in East Africa, all that's needed to make our good cause a great success is your presence.  From a true Jamaican heart, one always ready to help those worse off than us, those in need, from a heart looking to find joy amidst suffering, we extend a cordial invitation to The Africa Relief Benefit Concert.

The following are four select charities whose records and effectiveness are exemplary.  They're the one's we'll support and we urge one and all to do the same.

BROOKLYN MUSIC FEST THIS WEEKEND!
GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.

There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s  changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).

Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated
minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the
plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized
debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past.
GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the  best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers  in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists,  legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own  medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even  comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers,  connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those  readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes  that are underfoot.

You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate
your conversations and help create a new framework for a
better world.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.

It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call…..
