Introduction to Aimsweb

Aimsweb is a benchmark and progress monitoring system based on continuous student assessment. The results are immediate and can be shared with students, parents, teachers and administrators via a web-based data management and reporting system to determine response to intervention. Aimweb offers assessments in reading, math, spelling, behavior, and writing. During the training we will go over all of the measures and get an understanding of the Aimsweb site.

NH Destination Imagination Informational Session

Do you have students who enjoy a challenging activity? Do they enjoy games and puzzles? Learning new skills? Writing or performing? Building mechanical and technical things? Working in a group? Generating lots of ideas? Destination ImagiNation (or DI for short) can give your students the opportunity to hone these skills while providing a rewarding outlet for their creativity!

The NH Destination ImagiNation (NH-DI) 2011-2012 season has begun! NH-DI is run by New Hampshire’s Incredible Creativity Connection, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization with 30 years of experience in providing creative problem solving programs to New Hampshire youth.

Destination ImagiNation is a program that fosters creativity, team work and problem solving for kids from kindergarten through college. Kids work together in teams of 2 to 7 to solve open ended challenges, using their imaginations and Creative Problem Solving Tools. In DI, the kids are in charge, meaning that their solutions must be designed and created by themselves. Adults can teach skills but are not allowed to touch any of the team’s solution.

NH-DI is looking to expand on the over 1500 students from over 100 schools and community groups in New Hampshire that participated in the program last year!  NCES is hosting a FREE informational session with sample activities for any interested school personnel who thinks they may be interested in starting a DI program.

Military Culture 101

Children face enormous challenges when a family member is deployed to active duty in a "combat zone."  Every day, they may have more  to do or fewer opportunities to play ball because the family member is away.  Every night, the news reminds them that their loved one may not come home.  And the family member staying at home may be under additional stress creating an environment that is quite different from what these children have had before.  Military 101 provides information to school personnel on what these children and their families face and how this can impact the life of the child and what it can mean to the child's education.

Dates: Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Repeated: Wednesday, April 4, 2012
Time: 8:30 to 12:30
Cost: Free
Register: Please call NCES at 800-268-5437 or 603-466-5437

Reintegration and Special Topics: NH National Guard Follow Up

Special topics include (but are not limited to):
  • Reintegration
  • Dual deployments of both parents
  • The dynamics of being a "step" family

Collaboration Grant

I am pleased to inform you that NCES has recently been awarded a two year $66,000 grant by the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation to establish a collaborative working environment for Northern New Hampshire and Vermont educational and community leaders. The intent is for NCES to be a catalyst in the North Country relative to promoting and enhancing collaboration among school districts. Thus, a key objective of the project is to have districts move from a somewhat parochial view to a more global one that emphasizes partnership and/or training with nearby districts. The end result of such collaboration will hopefully result in cost savings while advancing student achievement.

A key component of the project is the establishment of a regional framework and/or monthly Forum which allows education and community leaders the opportunity to (1) look at each other’s practices, issues, problems and pressing needs (2) engage in reflective dialogue (3) under the guidance of a skilled facilitator to adapt and improve their practices via a collaborative problem solving approach. Participants in the Forum are from 12 New Hampshire SAUs and 3 Vermont SUs for a total of about 60 school districts. The participants are made up of SAU and SU School Superintendents, their respective School Board Presidents and/or their designee, as well as five community leaders. The Forum, whose initial meeting was October 27th, is facilitated by Dr. Wayne Gersen, a recently retired Superintendent from NH SAU 70.

Sustaining the momentum and progress accomplished by the regional Forum will require a local or “grass roots” effort. This will be achieved by the creation of four clusters within the region. Each cluster will consist of three to five SAUs/SUs in close proximity to one another. Toward the end of the project’s first year, Superintendents will be asked to identify an administrator from each of the four clusters to be trained by Dr. Gersen this summer to be a local facilitator. These individuals, beginning in September 2012, will then run Forums at the local and/or community level with participants made up of teachers, school administrators, parents, and community leaders. Thus, in year two of the grant, the regional Forum will continue as will four local and/or cluster Forums.

In conclusion, I leave you with the words of Margaret Mead,

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens
can change the world; indeed it’s the only thing that ever does.”
