The Weekly Newsletter for January 2-6, 2012
Family and Fur

Lewis the magnificent
Lewis is the star of the newsletter this week.  He is my sister's Jack Russell "terrorist," the ruler of the farm in Kentucky where they live.  He is visiting right now and will be with me for three weeks or so, as my sister and her beau are headed to Paris!  Oh la LA!

Lewis is a bit of a character, as evidenced by his headgear.  Tye, by the way, would NEVER put up with this, so it is especially fun for me to have Lewis to play with, and to try to keep up with, as you shall see in following story snips.

Cooking for the family
We celebrated Christmas the day after the real day this year.  I stayed home and cooked - everything!  It is so wonderful to be feeling well enough to spend hours at my stove.  Normally we all cook together, but Heather was being a guide at The Biltmore Estate and Lucinda and Greg were doing pre-Paris shopping.

Family. So sweet.
We were joined by a few close friends, just enough to fit around my dining table but plenty enough to make a significant dent in the victuals I'd prepared. The best part is that the sister and the beau have been here all week and have systematically been emptying my full fridge.  They know that I'm not big on leftovers and so it is GREAT for me to have them here.  PLUS Lucinda polished the iron-stained tiles in my shower and Greg fixed the mailbox and the woodstove and has been keeping the woodbox FULL.  It has been a fine, fine week.

In a quieter time
Lewis is a cuddler who will put up with almost any affection anyone wants to show him.  Even if I could pick her up, I'm not sure that Tye would tolerate this sort of attention.  She prefers being in charge.

And a not so quiet time
If Lewis seeks affection, Tye expresses jealousy.  Ah well.  I have found that the most reasonable approach is to go to the couch, invite Lewis up in the tiny space between me and the couch arm, and then encourage Tye to hop up in the remaining large space.  This, it seems, is agreeable to both of them and no jealous rages happen.  AND I get to be tucked in between two warm furry bodies.  Nice!

The Boss
We tease my big sister, but so do many of her friends.  This shirt, given to her by our friend Hartley, says, "She who must be obeyed."  We don't always do so, but...

A word or two from Laurey
A note from Laurey

Hello! It is mid day on the first day of the year here at Stoney Knob. I spent yesterday away and came home in time to have dinner (from Laurey’s!) My sister has been here for a week and left after dinner to go to one final Lindy Hop dance before heading home and, in a few hours, to Paris! I am dog sitting for Lewis the adventurer for a few weeks and have been lolling around all day with him and Tye the Sweet.

Lewis has created quite a stir here in the past few days as he quickly discovered how to leave my deck and then, after that was Lewis-proofed, how to leave the fenced in yard. Tye has never even thought about leaving (well, maybe she has, I don’t know) but, thanks to Lewis I am now on quite familiar terms with my neighbors.

On Friday I was in a meeting and saw a “Call Work!” text message on my phone. I asked for a moment and called only to find that “the little dog” had left my home. Yikes! I live on a busy road and that was not good. After my meeting I sped home and found that Lewis had left once, had been scooped up by my neighbor who had taken him back to my porch. But by the time Janet was back at her house, so was Lewis! I blocked off all exits from my deck and went back to work.

Yesterday I was away, as I said, enjoying the day with sweet friends a couple of hours from here. I left my phone in the car during my visit and only looked at it when it was time to head home. I found messages from work and from both sisters, all about Lewis, who had found another way to get out. Sigh. By the time I was home another exit was patched, a space under the back gate.

So I’ve been keeping the little fellow close to me, though he is not pleased. Right now Tye is in the front yard, barking to get in, and Lewis is whining to get out. How is this going to work? We’re all good while it is sleep time, Lewis burrowing under the covers each night, which I think is hilarious, Tye accepting her spot at the bottom of the bed – on top of the covers. But the going out thing is not quite smooth. I guess I’ll end up taking more walks with Lewis on a leash. We’ll just have to see.

Other than that, Happy New Year to you all. I hope you’ve had nice holidays. Not that we need to end with holiday time. But I know people are headed back to other places or headed back here from other places and we are feeling the pull to get back to things. I’m looking forward to getting back to my book, which I have left idle for the past few weeks. As each day comes along I am feeling better and better and plan to put that energy into writing. 2011 was kind of a full one for me. I am hoping for peace and health for 2012.

See you all soon, I hope, in the shop or on the streets or right here in notes back and forth.
Happy Happy New Year.

Wating for Mom to come home
Tye has showed Lewis how to get out the dog door and also just where to stand to make sure he gets the first possible glimpse of us as we come home.
