April 27 - SF Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Interlochen Arts Academy, the renowned Michigan-based boarding school is sending ensembles across the country for a festive series of spring performances. Join us at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco's Kanbar Hall on Friday, April 27th at 7:00 pm, as the Interlochen Jazz & Motion Picture Arts ensembles present a free concert. Featuring Academy alumni, bassist Matt Brewer (class of 01) and flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny (class of 84) as guest soloists. Reservations required. |
April 28 - Healdsburg First introduced to jazz audiences in the 1990s as the protege of Art Farmer, Dmitri Matheny has matured into "one of the jazz world's most talented horn players" (SF Chronicle). On Saturday, April 28th at 7:30 pm, Healdsburg Jazz Festival in association with Healdsburg Center for the Arts presents Jazz in the Gallery with the Dmitri Matheny Group. "Their music is a fertile landscape without boundaries," writes the Oakland Tribune, "earning Matheny and his cohorts a reputation as one of the most eclectic and daring ensembles on today's jazz scene." |

April 29 - Berkeley "An all-star jazz band featuring some of the most accomplished musicians in the western United States," the Dmitri Matheny Group is "a cohesive and seamless unit, serving up equal parts soulful expression, caressing phrases, imaginative asides, and dedicated lyricism" (All About Jazz). Catch the DMG featuring saxophonist Dave Ellis (pictured) at the Jazzschool's Hardymon Hall on Sunday, April 29th at 4:30 pm, for a lively performance of fresh originals, familiar jazz classics, hard bop, west coast cool and beloved standards from the Great American Songbook. May 5 - Talent Dmitri returns to Ashland, Oregon May 1-4 to present a series of master classes and workshops at area colleges and schools under the auspices of the Siskiyou Institute. The residency culminates with a concert on Saturday evening, May 5th at 7:00 pm, as he takes to the stage with vocalist Leslie Kendall and the Ed Dunsavage Trio to present I'll Take Manhattan: The Music of Rodgers & Hart at Paschal Winery in Talent. The spirited revue will spotlight timeless classics by the beloved songwriting duo, including "My Romance," "Blue Moon" and "My Funny Valentine." |

May 6 - SF Tango No. 9 embraces both a reverence for tango's seductive past and an innovative vision of the music's future. On Sunday, May 6th at 4:30 pm, the critically-acclaimed ensemble (featuring Joshua Raoul Brody on piano, Greg Stephens on trombone and bandleader Catherine Clune on violin) welcomes flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny to San Francisco's Bliss Bar for an afternoon of musical exploration. May 9 - Oakland On Wednesday, May 9th at 8:00 pm, the Dmitri Matheny Group returns to Yoshi's at Jack London Square, Oakland, for the world premiere of Dmitri Matheny's Crime Scenes, a new work inspired by espionage and underworld movie music. Drawing on classic themes from film noir, B-movies, spy thrillers and crime dramas, Crime Scenes is presented as a series of dreamlike flashbacks, conceptually linked together as a story with voiceover narration in the hard-boiled detective style of Raymond Chandler.
