Perfect for a cold day.
Lito tells me that if he makes one bowl full of these winter beauties they are gone in about 5 minutes.  Here is our new day's supply, and I'd bet they are sold out by mid-afternoon.

We saute them and drizzle a bit of sweet maple syrup on them.  Sweet, salty, bitter.  Crunchy and oh-so-good!  Even people who say they hate Brussels sprouts love these, though if YOU decide you like them we'll just have to make more.  Not such a bad thing, all in all.

"Cooking Local" - February 13
 Cooking Local with Laurey
Wednesday, February 13

The soup class was GREAT fun!
Do join me for the next class, "cooking local."
This is a demonstration class, but there will be ample for you to taste.

I'll show you how to make our new "Massaged Kale Salad;" Kale crisps; steamed and sauteed greens; Cheesy Polenta; and a few other things, dependent on what's in the markets.

The cost for the class is $25 per person. We’ll have wine available for purchase. And if you’d like dinner, come early and sample our
Simple Supper options in our deli case.

Call us to save your spots.

A little evening music - this Thursday, Feb. 7
Come enjoy some lovely southern blues with this local group.  They'll be in the cafe from 6-8, starting our new nights of music to ease you out of work and into the pre-weekend.

We'll have our Simple Suppers for you - a selection of just-made chef's favorites.  Come see what they've been inspired to make.  And then sit for a bit, have a glass of wine or a beer, relax, and THEN go home.

We promise - no dishes will need to be done (by you!)

Woolsey Heights Band

More color play with Alicia - February 10th
Alicia Keshishian, color babe extraordinaire, is returning for a second session of Playing around with Color.  This time it's a day of making cards.  Ahem!  It IS almost Valentine's day, my friends.

Learn new ways to fold paper; how to do simple binding; work with new materials (all are included in the class price); do cut-outs; make your own envelopes; and MUCH more!

The class is this coming week -  on Sunday, February 10.

The class will be from 10-4 and will cost $135, which includes our lunch.  Once you sign up we'll tell you what, if anything, we suggest you bring.  Email me (Laurey@laureysyum.com) to save your spot.  The first color class sold out, so don't dawdle.

Scrubbing
A slow day in our kitchen means that the gang empties the shelves, scours the burners and the hood and the walls and the table tops and the, well, the everything.

Zounds.

Sparkle.

Mmmmm.

A word or two from Laurey
oops - it is almost dark and I am just now sitting down to write to you.  (sorry).

For starters, I was so warm under my covers this morning that I dawdled and daydreamed and tucked my toes underneath my puppy and did not get up until much later than I had planned.  So it goes, right?

When I got to work there was a bit of a crisis about our ventilation system.  A bearing had siezed up and the make-up air fan had stopped working.  A few calls to a few repair people gave me enough information to calm the cooks and assure them that the natural ventilation of the exhaust hood would carry off a good amount of the cooking steams and such.  No grilling and no frying for now but other than that...onward.

I spent the rest of the morning poking around my desk, sorting and organizing and "getting ready" (aka - stalling) and found many reasons to go into the cafe and visit.  By noon I had still not started my note to you and so I left, went to see my sister, pestered HER for an hour or so and then went to watch a friend's kid's basketball game.  (aka: REALLY stalling!)

Then home to laundry, petting Tye, organizing the garbage (what?!) and now, finally, to my office chair and to the note.  Now it is almost dark.  It is probably time to transfer the laundry to the dryer and to take out the collection of indoor trash that now has room to fit in the outdoor garbage can - good thing I organized it earlier!

This girl can STALL!

My sister is coming for dinner and a visit and that is happening soon so, um, it's a good thing I'm finally typing!

On Monday I get the next version of my book's pages to edit and get back to the publisher.  I just got word that I am going to be joining the Honey Board again soon for a presentation or two.  I'm doing a tv spot soon and have a cooking class coming up too.  Oh, and my next treatment starts on Tuesday so I need to vacuum and clean the bathrooms and do some other organizing before I go into drug land and am able, mostly, to just sleep.

It is really time to put in the second load of clothes.

I'll be in touch next week.

Snow day in Asheville
Yes, I am a bit embarrassed to admit it, but THIS is a "snow day" around here.  Schools close (true!) kids stay home and parents wonder how it could be possible.  "No buses on icy roads," they say and yes, it is true that side roads ice up and it WOULD be dangerous.  But REALLY, my friends.

Why, when WE we kids we went to school unless the snow covered our front door.  That miraculous occurrence happened about once a year but that was the only time weather kept us at home.

1/2"!  Really?!!!
