ONE TIME CHANGE OF LOCATION!!! Chicago Israeli Dancing Weekly Update 3/12/13

In this issue

Hi Everyone,

PLEASE NOTE THE INFO BELOW REGARDING THE CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR THIS WEEK!!!!!!!!!

**************************************

In the heads up department, Simu Lev!  On Thursday night March 14 Chicago Israeli Dancing will join forces with Beketzev Acher with a pre-camp teaching session and harkada at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe.

Penny and I will be responsible for the teaching session that night from 7:30-9PM.  The Beketzev Acher team (see below), will run the harkada until 11PM or later??.

Please spread the word, especially to those out-of-towners who have been asking what the plans will be for that night.

North Shore Congregation Israel

1185 Sheridan Rd, Glencoe, IL 60022

The easiest way to get there is to go east on Lake Cook Road all the way to Sheridan and go south.  NSCI is on the east side of Sheridan.

Looking forward to dancing with our regulars, the Beketzev Acher out-of-towners, and some new-to-dancing people as well.

This week, we have the circle dance, Od Yavo'u as originally presented at Chagigah 1998 by the choreographer, Gadi Bitton.  In spite of subsequent changes by Gadi, we have chosen to preserve the original.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM ESTHER!!!

Dear Friends of AFIWDF,

I'm happy to announce a fundraiser to benefit the American Friends of Israel War Disabled Foundation on Sunday, March 17 with the Next Theater Company in the Noyes Cultural Center at 927 Noyes Street  in Evanston.

The Next Theater Company's upcoming production is Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated, adapted for the stage by Simon Block.  It chronicles a young Jewish man's journey as he struggles to unlock the secrets of his past. It follows the quirky journey of Jonathan scouring the rural Ukraine landscape in the search of a woman who may have saved his grandfather from the Nazis, accompanied by an old man haunted by memories of the war, an amorous and excitable dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr., and an irreverent translator with a unique grasp of the English language.

Join us at 1:00 PM before the show for an hour of light refreshment and camaraderie at the Noyes Cultural Center in the studio right next door to the theater entrance. The play  begins at 2:00 PM. Advance copies of the script will be available and we are invited to a special post-show discussion with members of the cast and artistic team.

The cost for this wonderful afternoon is only $36.00 per person.  Make your checks out to AFIWDF.

Please respond as soon as possible to reserve your tickets as they are limited.  (esthermosh@aol.com) Tell your family and friends, this is one program they shouldn't miss! Hope to see you all real soon!

Take care,

Esther Calamaro

As we continue to work on making this newsletter more interesting, here are a couple of pics that Carol took last week.  Eventually some may find their way to the masthead.  A work in progress but a great start.  Thanks so much, Carol.

Israeli Dancing in Naperville

Posted on behalf of Diane Toby...

Israeli Dance

Location: Congregation Beth Shalom social hall

Address: 772 West 5th Avenue  Naperville, IL 60563

Time: Monday evenings, 7:00 to around 8:30

Cost: CBS members: free. Non-members: one dollar donation appreciated.

Leaders: Diane and Brian Toby. Partner Dance Consultant: Jeff Subeck.

For more information contact dtoby(at)comcast.net or bhtoby(at)comcast.net.

Join our friendly group to connect with Israeli culture, enjoy some physical activity and sharpen your memory through Israeli folk dancing. We do plenty of circle and line dances, with some partner dances mixed in.

Most of the dances we do are beginner/intermediate level.  All ages and experience levels are welcome, including children accompanied by a parent.

We meet almost every Monday with dances for beginners from 7 pm to 7:45 pm and then move on to intermediate dances until around 8:30. When time permits, we take a few requests from 8:30 to 8:45.  Visitors are always welcome. Our regular dancers love to watch the more advanced dances.  If visiting from out of town, we'll play requests if you tell us ahead of time.

Our partner dance repertoire is small and still growing. Women are encouraged (but not required) to learn both parts. The etiquette in our group is partner switching/partner rotation.

Open to the community. For security purposes, we ask that people joining for the first time contact the CBS office at (630) 961-1818, and ask for Dorothy, to let us know you are coming, and to make sure that we are meeting on that date.

Eliyahu Gamliel z"l

It is with great sadness that I report to you on the passing of Eliyahu Gamliel, z"l. He was, to my mind, one of the great and gentle souls from the early years of IFD.  Some of his classic dances include: Dror Yikra, Eretz Zavat Chalav, Eliyahu Hanavi, Uva'u Ha'ovdim and Shnei Shoshanim. In addition to being a choreographer, he was also a talented flute/recorder player.

It is well worth watching the following video clip featuring Eliyahu doing a number of his classic dances.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lR5xQ_Otm0

This video is from one of Avner Na'im's nostalgia nights from a couple of years ago.  Thanks to Les Posen for calling it to our attention.  (I am not sure about this but Les may have done something to help with the music quality in the video too.)

And here is a lovely tribute posted by Benzion Raz-Reznik
